Harivarasanam (Hariharatmaja Ashtakam)
हरिवरासनम् (हरिहरात्मजाष्टकम्)
This is the genuine Harivarasanam -- the real, extremely famous Sanskritised-Malayalam ashtakam sung nightly at the Sabarimala Sree Dharma Sastha Temple to put Lord Ayyappa to sleep as the sanctum doors close (the 'therapatt' / temple lullaby). Composed circa 1923 and first performed at Sabarimala in the early 1950s, it reached national fame through K. J. Yesudas's 1975 recording (music by G. Devarajan) for the film Swami Ayyappan, and remains the version played at the temple every night. Text verified against Wikipedia's sourced lyrics (citing vignanam.org and celextel.org/Vedanta Shastras Library) and cross-checked against multiple independent lyric sites. The original is in Malayalam script (Sanskritised Malayalam, not classical Sanskrit); the Devanagari rendering below is a standard script transliteration, and the IAST transliteration is given verbatim from the source. Unlike the other four ashtakams audited alongside this file, it has exactly 8 verses with no phala-shruti verse -- each verse is traditionally followed in performance by the refrain 'saranam ayyappa swami saranam ayyappa.'
यह प्रामाणिक हरिवरासनम् है -- संस्कृतीकृत मलयालम में रचित वह अत्यंत प्रसिद्ध अष्टकम्, जो प्रतिदिन रात्रि में शबरीमला श्री धर्मशास्ता मंदिर में गर्भगृह के द्वार बंद होते समय भगवान अय्यप्पा को निद्रा हेतु गाया जाता है ('तेरापट्टु' / मंदिर-लोरी)। लगभग 1923 में रचित और 1950 के दशक के आरम्भ में शबरीमला में प्रथम बार गाया गया, यह के. जे. येसुदास की 1975 की रिकॉर्डिंग (संगीत जी. देवराजन) के माध्यम से फिल्म 'स्वामी अय्यप्पन' से राष्ट्रीय ख्याति तक पहुँचा, और आज भी प्रतिदिन मंदिर में यही संस्करण बजाया जाता है। पाठ को विकिपीडिया के स्रोत-सहित बोलों (vignanam.org तथा celextel.org/Vedanta Shastras Library के हवाले से) से मिलाया गया है, तथा कई स्वतंत्र गीत-स्रोतों से जांचा गया है। मूल पाठ मलयालम लिपि (संस्कृतीकृत मलयालम, शुद्ध संस्कृत नहीं) में है; नीचे दी गई देवनागरी प्रस्तुति मानक लिप्यंतरण है, और IAST लिप्यंतरण स्रोत से यथावत् दिया गया है। इस साथ जाँचे गए अन्य चार अष्टकमों के विपरीत, इसमें ठीक 8 श्लोक हैं और कोई फलश्रुति श्लोक नहीं -- प्रत्येक श्लोक के पश्चात् गायन में परंपरागत रूप से 'शरणं अय्यप्पा स्वामि शरणं अय्यप्पा' पुनरावृत्ति होती है।

हरि की कृपा से प्राप्त सिंहासन पर आसीन, विश्व के मोहक, हरि द्वारा स्थापित ईश्वर, जिनके चरण-पादुका की आराधना होती है; शत्रुओं के विमर्दक, नित्य नर्तनशील -- हे हरिहरात्मज देव, मैं आपकी शरण में हूँ।
Seated upon the throne of Hari's grace, enchanter of the universe, the lord established through Hari, whose sacred feet are worshipped; destroyer of enemies, the eternal dancer -- I take refuge in you, O son of Hari and Hara, the Lord.
शरणकीर्तनं भक्तमानसम् भरणलोलुपं नर्तनालसम् । अरुणभासुरं भूतनायकम् हरिहरात्मजं देवमाश्रये ॥२॥

Praised in songs of surrender, dwelling in the hearts of devotees, eager to nurture and sustain them, graceful in his dance; radiant as the dawn, lord of all beings -- I take refuge in you, O son of Hari and Hara, the Lord.
प्रणयसत्यकं प्राणनायकम् प्रणतकल्पकं सुप्रभाञ्चितम् । प्रणवमन्दिरं कीर्तनप्रियम् हरिहरात्मजं देवमाश्रये ॥३॥
praṇayasatyakaṃ prāṇanāyakam praṇatakalpakaṃ suprabhāñchitam | praṇavamandiraṃ kīrtanapriyam hariharātmajaṃ dēvamāśrayē ||3||
प्रेम में सत्यनिष्ठ, भक्तों के प्राणनायक, प्रणत जनों के लिए कल्पवृक्ष, सुंदर प्रभा से अंचित; प्रणव (ॐ) के मंदिर, कीर्तन-प्रिय -- हे हरिहरात्मज देव, मैं आपकी शरण में हूँ।
True and steadfast in love, the very life-breath of his devotees, the wish-fulfilling tree for those who bow before him, adorned with radiant splendor; the abode of the sacred Om, fond of devotional song -- I take refuge in you, O son of Hari and Hara, the Lord.
तुरगवाहनं सुन्दराननम् वरगदायुधं वेदवर्णितम् । गुरुकृपाकरं कीर्तनप्रियम् हरिहरात्मजं देवमाश्रये ॥४॥
turagavāhanaṃ sundarānanam varagadāyudhaṃ vēdavarṇitam | gurukṛpākaraṃ kīrtanapriyam hariharātmajaṃ dēvamāśrayē ||4||
अश्ववाहन, सुंदर मुखमंडल, वरगदा (श्रेष्ठ गदा) आयुधधारी, वेदों में वर्णित; गुरुकृपा के स्रोत, कीर्तनप्रिय -- हे हरिहरात्मज देव, मैं आपकी शरण में हूँ।
Mounted upon a horse, beautiful of face, wielding the blessed mace as his weapon, extolled in the Vedas; the very source of a Guru's grace, fond of devotional song -- I take refuge in you, O son of Hari and Hara, the Lord.
त्रिभुवनार्चितं देवतात्मकम् त्रिनयनप्रभुं दिव्यदेशिकम् । त्रिदशपूजितं चिन्तितप्रदम् हरिहरात्मजं देवमाश्रये ॥५॥
tribhuvanārchitaṃ dēvatātmakam trinayanaprabhuṃ divyadēśikam | tridaśapūjitaṃ chintitapradam hariharātmajaṃ dēvamāśrayē ||5||
त्रिभुवन द्वारा अर्चित, देवतात्मक, त्रिनयन (शिव) की प्रभा धारण करने वाले प्रभु, दिव्य देशिक; त्रिदश (देवगण) द्वारा पूजित, चिंतितप्रद (मन में सोचे गए फल के दाता) -- हे हरिहरात्मज देव, मैं आपकी शरण में हूँ।
Worshipped by the three worlds, the very essence of all deities, the lord bearing the radiance of the three-eyed one (Shiva), the divine preceptor; worshipped by the celestial host, granter of every heartfelt wish -- I take refuge in you, O son of Hari and Hara, the Lord.
भवभयापहं भावुकावकम् भुवनमोहनं भूतिभूषणम् । धवळवाहनं दिव्यवारणम् हरिहरात्मजं देवमाश्रये ॥६॥
bhavabhayāpahaṃ bhāvukāvakam bhuvanamōhanaṃ bhūtibhūṣaṇam | dhavaḻavāhanaṃ divyavāraṇam hariharātmajaṃ dēvamāśrayē ||6||

Remover of the fear of worldly existence, protector of devoted hearts, enchanter of the world, adorned with sacred ash; mounted upon the divine white elephant -- I take refuge in you, O son of Hari and Hara, the Lord.
कळमृदुस्मितं सुन्दराननम् कळभकोमलं गात्रमोहनम् । कळभकेसरीवाजिवाहनम् हरिहरात्मजं देवमाश्रये ॥७॥
kaḻamṛdusmitaṃ sundarānanam kaḻabhakōmalaṃ gātramōhanam | kaḻabhakēsarīvājivāhanam hariharātmajaṃ dēvamāśrayē ||7||
मृदु-मधुर मुस्कान सहित, सुंदर मुखमंडल, गजशावक-सम कोमल, मोहक शरीरवाले; गज, केसरी (सिंह) और अश्व -- सभी पर सवार होने वाले -- हे हरिहरात्मज देव, मैं आपकी शरण में हूँ।
With a gentle, sweet smile and a beautiful face, tender as a young elephant, his form utterly enchanting; he who rides elephant, lion, and horse alike -- I take refuge in you, O son of Hari and Hara, the Lord.
श्रितजनप्रियं चिन्तितप्रदम् श्रुतिविभूषणं साधुजीवनम् । श्रुतिमनोहरं गीतलालसम् हरिहरात्मजं देवमाश्रये ॥८॥ शरणं अय्यप्पा स्वामि शरणं अय्यप्पा । शरणं अय्यप्पा स्वामि शरणं अय्यप्पा ॥
