Hayagriva Kavach
हयग्रीव कवच
Sri Hayagriva Kavacham -- the protective armor of Lord Hayagriva, the horse-headed form of Vishnu and lord of knowledge. It occurs in the Atharva Veda's Purva Samhita (Mantra Khanda), with the sage Hayagriva as its rishi and Anushtup as its meter. The text opens with three meditation (dhyana) verses on Hayagriva's radiant form, then assigns protection of every part of the body and all eight directions to different names and aspects of Hayagriva and Vishnu, and closes by declaring that the reciter gains long life, health, prosperity, and mastery in expounding the scriptures through Hayagriva's grace.
श्री हयग्रीव कवच -- ज्ञान के स्वामी, विष्णु के अश्व-मुख अवतार भगवान हयग्रीव का रक्षा-कवच। यह अथर्ववेद की पूर्वसंहिता (मन्त्रखण्ड) में प्राप्त होता है, जिसके ऋषि हयग्रीव तथा छन्द अनुष्टुप् हैं। आरम्भ के तीन ध्यान-श्लोकों में हयग्रीव के तेजस्वी स्वरूप का ध्यान किया गया है, इसके पश्चात् शरीर के प्रत्येक अंग तथा आठों दिशाओं की रक्षा हयग्रीव और विष्णु के विभिन्न नामों व स्वरूपों को सौंपी गई है, और अंत में यह घोषित किया गया है कि पाठक को हयग्रीव की कृपा से दीर्घायु, आरोग्य, ऐश्वर्य और शास्त्र-प्रवचन की सामर्थ्य प्राप्त होती है।
कलशाम्बुधिसंकाशं कमलायतलोचनं । कलानिधिकृतावासं कर्णिकान्तरवासिनम् ॥१॥
kalaśāmbudhisaṃkāśaṃ kamalāyatalocanaṃ | kalānidhikṛtāvāsaṃ karṇikāntaravāsinam ||1||
वे कलश-मंथन से उत्पन्न सागर के समान तेजस्वी हैं, उनके नेत्र दीर्घ कमल-दल के समान हैं; वे चन्द्रमा में निवास करते हैं और उसके भीतरी मध्य-भाग में विराजमान हैं।
Bright as the ocean that yielded the pot of nectar, with eyes long as lotus petals, Hayagriva makes his abode in the moon and dwells within its inner disc.
ज्ञानमुद्राक्षवलयं शङ्खचक्रलसत्करं । भूषाकिरणसन्दोहविराजितदिगन्तरम् ॥२॥
jñānamudrākṣavalayaṃ śaṅkhacakralasatkaraṃ | bhūṣākiraṇasandohavirājitadigantaram ||2||
वे ज्ञान-मुद्रा और अक्षमाला धारण करते हैं, उनके हाथों में शंख और चक्र सुशोभित हैं; उनके आभूषणों की किरणों से सम्पूर्ण दिशाएँ प्रकाशित होती हैं।
He shows the gesture of knowledge and wears a rosary of beads, his hands radiant with conch and discus; the far horizons glow with the rays streaming from his ornaments.
वक्त्राब्जनिर्गतोद्दामवाणीसन्तानशोभितं । देवतासार्वभौमं तं ध्यायेदिष्टार्थसिद्धये ॥३॥
vaktrābjanirgatoddāmavāṇīsantānaśobhitaṃ | devatāsārvabhaumaṃ taṃ dhyāyediṣṭārthasiddhaye ||3||
उनके कमल-मुख से निकलती अखंड वाणी-धारा उन्हें सुशोभित करती है; वे देवताओं में सर्वोच्च हैं -- इच्छित फल की सिद्धि हेतु उनका ध्यान करना चाहिए।
Adorned by the unbroken stream of sacred speech flowing from his lotus-like mouth, he is sovereign among the gods; meditate on him for the fulfilment of every true desire.
हयग्रीवश्शिरः पातु ललाटं चन्द्रमध्यगः । शास्त्रदृष्टिर्दृशौ पातु शब्दब्रह्मात्मकश्श्रुती ॥४॥
hayagrīvaśśiraḥ pātu lalāṭaṃ candramadhyagaḥ | śāstradṛṣṭirdṛśau pātu śabdabrahmātmakaśśrutī ||4||
हयग्रीव मेरे शिर की रक्षा करें, चन्द्रमा में स्थित स्वरूप मेरे ललाट की रक्षा करें; शास्त्र-दृष्टि मेरे नेत्रों की और शब्द-ब्रह्म-स्वरूप मेरे कानों की रक्षा करें।
May Hayagriva guard my head, and the one dwelling within the moon guard my forehead. May the scripture's own vision guard my eyes, and the essence of the eternal Word guard my ears.
घ्राणं गन्धात्मकः पातु वदनं यज्ञसम्भवः । जिह्वां वागीश्वरः पातु मुकुन्दो दन्तसंहतीः ॥५॥
ghrāṇaṃ gandhātmakaḥ pātu vadanaṃ yajñasambhavaḥ | jihvāṃ vāgīśvaraḥ pātu mukundo dantasaṃhatīḥ ||5||
गन्ध-स्वरूप मेरी नासिका की रक्षा करें, यज्ञ से उत्पन्न स्वरूप मेरे मुख की रक्षा करें; वागीश्वर मेरी जिह्वा की और मुकुन्द मेरे दाँतों की पंक्ति की रक्षा करें।
May the essence of fragrance guard my nose, and the one born of sacrifice guard my face. May the Lord of speech guard my tongue, and Mukunda guard the row of my teeth.
ओष्ठं ब्रह्मात्मकः पातु पातु नारायणोऽधरं । शिवात्मा चिबुकं पातु कपोलौ कमलाप्रभुः ॥६॥
oṣṭhaṃ brahmātmakaḥ pātu pātu nārāyaṇo'dharaṃ | śivātmā cibukaṃ pātu kapolau kamalāprabhuḥ ||6||
ब्रह्म-स्वरूप मेरे ऊपरी होंठ की रक्षा करें, नारायण मेरे निचले होंठ की रक्षा करें; शिव-स्वरूप मेरी ठुड्डी की और लक्ष्मीपति मेरे कपोलों की रक्षा करें।
May the soul of Brahma guard my upper lip, and Narayana guard my lower lip. May the soul of Shiva guard my chin, and the Lord of Lakshmi guard my cheeks.
विद्यात्मा पीठकं पातु कण्ठं नादात्मको मम । भुजौ चतुर्भुजः पातु करौ दैत्येन्द्रमर्दनः ॥७॥
vidyātmā pīṭhakaṃ pātu kaṇṭhaṃ nādātmako mama | bhujau caturbhujaḥ pātu karau daityendramardanaḥ ||7||
विद्या-स्वरूप मेरे तालु की रक्षा करें, नाद-स्वरूप मेरे कण्ठ की रक्षा करें; चतुर्भुज स्वरूप मेरी भुजाओं की और दैत्येन्द्र का नाश करने वाले मेरे हाथों की रक्षा करें।
May the soul of learning guard my palate, and the soul of sacred sound guard my throat. May the four-armed one guard my arms, and the crusher of the demon-lord guard my hands.
ज्ञानात्मा हृदयं पातु विश्वात्मा तु कुचद्वयं । मध्यमं पातु सर्वात्मा पातु पीताम्बरः कटिम् ॥८॥
jñānātmā hṛdayaṃ pātu viśvātmā tu kucadvayaṃ | madhyamaṃ pātu sarvātmā pātu pītāmbaraḥ kaṭim ||8||
ज्ञान-स्वरूप मेरे हृदय की रक्षा करें, विश्व-स्वरूप मेरे वक्षस्थल की रक्षा करें; सर्वात्मा मेरी कमर के मध्य भाग की और पीताम्बरधारी मेरी कटि की रक्षा करें।
May the soul of knowledge guard my heart, and the soul of the universe guard my chest. May the soul of all things guard my midriff, and the one clad in yellow guard my waist.
कुक्षिं कुक्षिस्थविश्वो मे बलिबन्धो (भङ्गो) वलित्रयं । नाभिं मे पद्मनाभोऽव्याद्गुह्यं गुह्यार्थबोधकृत् ॥९॥
kukṣiṃ kukṣisthaviśvo me balibandho (bhaṅgo) valitrayaṃ | nābhiṃ me padmanābho'vyādguhyaṃ guhyārthabodhakṛt ||9||
जिनके उदर में सम्पूर्ण विश्व स्थित है, वे मेरे उदर की रक्षा करें; बलि को बाँधने वाले मेरी त्रिवली (कमर की तीन रेखाओं) की रक्षा करें; पद्मनाभ मेरी नाभि की रक्षा करें, गूढ़ अर्थ के बोधक मेरे गुह्य अंगों की रक्षा करें।
May the one who holds the universe within his belly guard my abdomen, and the subduer of Bali guard the three folds of my waist. May Padmanabha guard my navel, and the revealer of hidden truths guard what is intimate.
ऊरू दामोदरः पातु जानुनी मधुसूदनः । पातु जंघे महाविष्णुः गुल्फौ पातु जनार्दनः ॥१०॥
ūrū dāmodaraḥ pātu jānunī madhusūdanaḥ | pātu jaṅghe mahāviṣṇuḥ gulphau pātu janārdanaḥ ||10||
दामोदर मेरी जंघाओं की रक्षा करें, मधुसूदन मेरे घुटनों की रक्षा करें; महाविष्णु मेरी पिंडलियों की और जनार्दन मेरे टखनों की रक्षा करें।
May Damodara guard my thighs, and Madhusudana guard my knees. May Mahavishnu guard my shins, and Janardana guard my ankles.
पादौ त्रिविक्रमः पातु पातु पादाङ्गुळिर्हरिः । सर्वांगं सर्वगः पातु पातु रोमाणि केशवः ॥११॥
pādau trivikramaḥ pātu pātu pādāṅguḷirhariḥ | sarvāṅgaṃ sarvagaḥ pātu pātu romāṇi keśavaḥ ||11||
त्रिविक्रम मेरे पैरों की रक्षा करें, हरि मेरी पैर की अंगुलियों की रक्षा करें; सर्वव्यापी स्वरूप मेरे सम्पूर्ण शरीर की और केशव मेरे रोम-रोम की रक्षा करें।
May Trivikrama guard my feet, and Hari guard my toes. May the all-pervading one guard my entire body, and Keshava guard even the hairs on it.
धातून्नाडीगतः पातु भार्यां लक्ष्मीपतिर्मम । पुत्रान्विश्वकुटुंबी मे पातु बन्धून्सुरेश्वरः ॥१२॥
dhātūnnāḍīgataḥ pātu bhāryāṃ lakṣmīpatirmama | putrānviśvakuṭumbī me pātu bandhūnsureśvaraḥ ||12||
नाड़ियों में संचरण करने वाले मेरे शरीर की धातुओं की रक्षा करें, लक्ष्मीपति मेरी पत्नी की रक्षा करें; समस्त विश्व जिनका परिवार है, वे मेरी संतान की और देवेश्वर मेरे बन्धुजनों की रक्षा करें।
May the one who moves through the body's channels guard its vital elements, and the Lord of Lakshmi guard my wife. May the one whose family is the whole world guard my children, and the Lord of the gods guard my kin.
मित्रं मित्रात्मकः पातु वह्न्यात्मा शत्रुसंहतीः । प्राणान्वाय्वात्मकः पातु क्षेत्रं विश्वम्भरात्मकः ॥१३॥
mitraṃ mitrātmakaḥ pātu vahnyātmā śatrusaṃhatīḥ | prāṇānvāyvātmakaḥ pātu kṣetraṃ viśvambharātmakaḥ ||13||
मित्र-स्वरूप (सूर्य) मेरे मित्रों की रक्षा करें, अग्नि-स्वरूप शत्रुओं के समूह से रक्षा करें; वायु-स्वरूप मेरे प्राणों की और विश्व को धारण करने वाले मेरे शरीर की रक्षा करें।
May the sun's own soul guard my friends, and the soul of fire guard against every mass of enemies. May the soul of wind guard my vital breaths, and the soul that sustains the whole world guard my body.
वरुणात्मा रसान्पातु व्योमात्मा हृद्गुहान्तरं । दिवारात्रं हृषीकेशः पातु सर्वं जगद्गुरुः ॥१४॥
varuṇātmā rasānpātu vyomātmā hṛdguhāntaraṃ | divārātraṃ hṛṣīkeśaḥ pātu sarvaṃ jagadguruḥ ||14||
वरुण-स्वरूप मेरे शरीर के रसों की रक्षा करें, आकाश-स्वरूप मेरे हृदय की गुहा की रक्षा करें; हृषीकेश दिन-रात मेरी रक्षा करें, जगद्गुरु शेष सब कुछ की रक्षा करें।
May the soul of Varuna guard the fluids of my body, and the soul of space guard the cave of my heart. May Hrishikesha guard me through day and night, and the teacher of the world guard everything else.
विषमे संकटे चैव पातु क्षेमंकरो मम । सच्चिदानन्दरूपो मे ज्ञानं रक्षतु सर्वदा ॥१५॥
viṣame saṃkaṭe caiva pātu kṣemaṃkaro mama | saccidānandarūpo me jñānaṃ rakṣatu sarvadā ||15||
विपत्ति और संकट में कल्याणकारी मेरी रक्षा करें; सच्चिदानन्द-स्वरूप सदैव मेरे ज्ञान की रक्षा करें।
In danger and in every difficulty, may the giver of well-being protect me. May he whose very form is being, consciousness, and bliss forever protect my knowledge.
प्राच्यां रक्षतु सर्वात्मा आग्नेय्यां ज्ञानदीपकः । याम्यां बोधप्रदः पातु नैरृत्यां चिद्घनप्रभः ॥१६॥
prācyāṃ rakṣatu sarvātmā āgneyyāṃ jñānadīpakaḥ | yāmyāṃ bodhapradaḥ pātu nairṛtyāṃ cidghanaprabhaḥ ||16||
सर्वात्मा पूर्व दिशा की रक्षा करें, ज्ञान का दीपक आग्नेय दिशा की रक्षा करें; बोध देने वाले दक्षिण दिशा की और सघन चैतन्य-प्रभा नैऋत्य दिशा की रक्षा करें।
May the soul of all things guard the east, and the lamp of knowledge guard the south-east. May the giver of understanding guard the south, and the radiance dense with pure consciousness guard the south-west.
विद्यानिधिस्तु वारुण्यां वायव्यां चिन्मयोऽवतु । कौबेर्यां वित्तदः पातु ऐशान्यां च जगद्गुरुः ॥१७॥
vidyānidhistu vāruṇyāṃ vāyavyāṃ cinmayo'vatu | kauberyāṃ vittadaḥ pātu aiśānyāṃ ca jagadguruḥ ||17||
विद्या के भण्डार पश्चिम दिशा की रक्षा करें, चिन्मय स्वरूप वायव्य दिशा की रक्षा करें; धन देने वाले उत्तर दिशा की और जगद्गुरु ईशान दिशा की रक्षा करें।
May the treasure of all learning guard the west, and the one who is pure consciousness guard the north-west. May the giver of wealth guard the north, and the teacher of the world guard the north-east.
उर्ध्वं पातु जगत्स्वामी पात्वधस्तात्परात्परः । रक्षाहीनं तु यत्स्थानं रक्षत्वखिलनायकः ॥१८॥
ūrdhvaṃ pātu jagatsvāmī pātvadhastātparātparaḥ | rakṣāhīnaṃ tu yatsthānaṃ rakṣatvakhilanāyakaḥ ||18||
जगत्स्वामी ऊपर से मेरी रक्षा करें, परात्पर नीचे से मेरी रक्षा करें; और जहाँ कहीं भी रक्षा शेष रह जाए, वहाँ सम्पूर्ण जगत के नायक रक्षा करें।
May the Lord of the universe guard me from above, and the one who transcends even the highest guard me from below. Wherever protection is still lacking, may the leader of all things guard that too.
एवं न्यस्तशरीरोऽसौ साक्षाद्वागीश्वरो भवेत् । आयुरारोग्यमैश्वर्यं सर्वशास्त्रप्रवक्तृताम् ॥१९॥
evaṃ nyastaśarīro'sau sākṣādvāgīśvaro bhavet | āyurārogyamaiśvaryaṃ sarvaśāstrapravaktṛtām ||19||
इस प्रकार जो अपने शरीर को इस कवच में समर्पित करता है, वह साक्षात् वागीश्वर हो जाता है; उसे आयु, आरोग्य, ऐश्वर्य और समस्त शास्त्रों के प्रवचन की सामर्थ्य प्राप्त होती है।
One who thus offers his whole body to this armor becomes, in truth, the Lord of speech himself, gaining long life, health, prosperity, and the power to expound every scripture.
लभते नात्र सन्देहो हयग्रीवप्रसादतः । इतीदं कीर्तितं दिव्यं कवचं देवपूजितम् ॥२०॥
labhate nātra sandeho hayagrīvaprasādataḥ | itīdaṃ kīrtitaṃ divyaṃ kavacaṃ devapūjitam ||20||
इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं कि यह फल हयग्रीव की कृपा से प्राप्त होता है। इस प्रकार देवताओं द्वारा पूजित यह दिव्य कवच वर्णित किया गया।
This he attains without doubt, by the grace of Hayagriva. Thus is proclaimed this divine armor, worshipped even by the gods.
