Varaha Ashtakam
वराह अष्टकम्
This is the traditional Shri Varaha Stotram composed by Shridhara Swami (circa 14th century), the renowned Advaitin monk best known for his commentary Bhavartha-dipika on the Bhagavata Purana. Written in eight anushtubh verses, each closing with the refrain 'vande varaharupinam' (I bow to the one in boar form), the hymn reads Vishnu's Varaha avatar through a Vedantic lens: as the imperishable reality that scripture can only describe by negation, the teacher of 'Thou art That', the lifter of the sunken Earth, the slayer of Hiranyaksha, and the boat that carries devotees across worldly existence.
यह श्रीधर स्वामी (लगभग १४वीं शताब्दी) द्वारा रचित परंपरागत श्रीवराहस्तोत्रम् है। श्रीधर स्वामी अद्वैत परंपरा के प्रसिद्ध संत तथा भागवत पुराण पर भावार्थदीपिका नामक टीका के रचयिता के रूप में विख्यात हैं। आठ अनुष्टुप् श्लोकों में रचित यह स्तोत्र प्रत्येक श्लोक के अंत में 'वन्दे वाराहरूपिणम्' की आवृत्ति के साथ भगवान विष्णु के वराह अवतार को वेदांतिक दृष्टि से प्रस्तुत करता है -- अविनाशी तत्त्व के रूप में जिसे श्रुति केवल निषेध द्वारा वर्णित कर सकती है, 'तत्त्वमसि' के उपदेशक के रूप में, डूबी हुई पृथ्वी के उद्धारक, हिरण्याक्ष के संहारक, और संसार-सागर से पार कराने वाली नौका के रूप में।
चिदानन्दघनं शुद्धं विश्वमङ्गलकारकम् । मोक्षहेतुं हि तं विष्णुं वन्दे वाराहरूपिणम् ॥१॥
cidānandaghanaṃ śuddhaṃ viśvamaṅgalakārakam | mokṣahetuṃ hi taṃ viṣṇuṃ vande vārāharūpiṇam ||1||
मैं वराहरूपधारी विष्णु को प्रणाम करता हूँ, जो चिदानन्दघन, शुद्ध, विश्व के मंगलकारक और मोक्ष के हेतु हैं।
I bow to Vishnu in the form of Varaha, dense with consciousness and bliss, pure, the bringer of auspiciousness to the universe, and the cause of liberation.
नेति नेति श्रुतिर्ब्रूते यस्य रूपं विनिर्णयन् । परब्रह्महितं विष्णुं वन्दे वाराहरूपिणम् ॥२॥
neti neti śrutirbrūte yasya rūpaṃ vinirṇayan | parabrahmahitaṃ viṣṇuṃ vande vārāharūpiṇam ||2||
मैं वराहरूप विष्णु को प्रणाम करता हूँ, जिनके स्वरूप का निर्णय करते हुए श्रुति केवल 'नेति नेति' कह सकती है -- वे विष्णु परब्रह्म से अभिन्न हैं।
I bow to Vishnu as Varaha, whose form the scripture, in trying to define it, can only describe by saying 'not this, not this' -- Vishnu who is one with the Supreme Brahman.
तत्त्वमसीति वक्तारमाविर्भूतं जगत्पतिम् । श्रीसद्गुरुं हितं विष्णुं वन्दे वाराहरूपिणम् ॥३॥
tattvamasīti vaktāramāvirbhūtaṃ jagatpatim | śrīsadguruṃ hitaṃ viṣṇuṃ vande vārāharūpiṇam ||3||
मैं वराहरूप विष्णु को प्रणाम करता हूँ, जो 'तत्त्वमसि' महावाक्य के उपदेशक, प्रकट जगत्पति और सच्चे कल्याणकारी सद्गुरु हैं।
I bow to Vishnu as Varaha, who declares the great teaching 'Thou art That', manifested Lord of the universe, the true and beneficent guru.
रसातलगतां भूमिं गजः कमलिनीमिव । उद्दधार हि तं विष्णुं वन्दे वाराहरूपिणम् ॥४॥
rasātalagatāṃ bhūmiṃ gajaḥ kamalinīmiva | uddadhāra hi taṃ viṣṇuṃ vande vārāharūpiṇam ||4||
मैं वराहरूप विष्णु को प्रणाम करता हूँ, जिन्होंने रसातल में डूबी पृथ्वी को उसी सहजता से उठाया जैसे गज कमलिनी को उठाता है।
I bow to Vishnu as Varaha, who lifted the Earth sunk in the netherworld as effortlessly as an elephant lifts a lotus stalk from a pond.
अवधीद्यो हिरण्याक्षं विश्वकण्टकराक्षसम् । विश्वपालहितं विष्णुं वन्दे वाराहरूपिणम् ॥५॥
avadhīdyo hiraṇyākṣaṃ viśvakaṇṭakarākṣasam | viśvapālahitaṃ viṣṇuṃ vande vārāharūpiṇam ||5||
मैं वराहरूप विष्णु को प्रणाम करता हूँ, जिन्होंने विश्व के कंटकस्वरूप राक्षस हिरण्याक्ष का वध किया और जो समस्त लोकों के पालक तथा हितकारी हैं।
I bow to Vishnu as Varaha, who slew the demon Hiranyaksha, a thorn in the side of the universe, and who protects and benefits all the worlds.
धर्मोद्धारावतारोऽयं सज्जनावनहेतुकम् । जगत्पतिं हितं विष्णुं वन्दे वाराहरूपिणम् ॥६॥
dharmoddhāravatāro'yaṃ sajjanāvanahetukam | jagatpatiṃ hitaṃ viṣṇuṃ vande vārāharūpiṇam ||6||
मैं वराहरूप विष्णु को प्रणाम करता हूँ, जो धर्मोद्धार के लिए अवतरित हुए, सज्जनों के रक्षक और जगत्पति हैं।
I bow to Vishnu as Varaha, this avatar taken for the restoration of dharma and the protection of the virtuous, the beneficent Lord of the universe.
अत्यन्तकरुणासान्द्रं जगदुद्धारकं परम् । भवतारं हि तं विष्णुं वन्दे वाराहरूपिणम् ॥७॥
atyantakaruṇāsāndraṃ jagaduddhārakaṃ param | bhavatāraṃ hi taṃ viṣṇuṃ vande vārāharūpiṇam ||7||
मैं वराहरूप विष्णु को प्रणाम करता हूँ, जो अत्यंत करुणासान्द्र, जगत् के परम उद्धारक और संसार से पार कराने वाले हैं।
I bow to Vishnu as Varaha, overflowing with boundless compassion, the supreme uplifter of the world, who carries devotees across worldly existence.
सदैवाक्लिष्टकर्माणं जगतस्स्थितिहेतवे । भवनौकां हि तं विष्णुं वन्दे वाराहरूपिणम् ॥८॥
sadaivākliṣṭakarmāṇaṃ jagatassthitihetave | bhavanaukāṃ hi taṃ viṣṇuṃ vande vārāharūpiṇam ||8||
मैं वराहरूप विष्णु को प्रणाम करता हूँ, जिनके कर्म सदा अक्लिष्ट हैं, जो जगत् की स्थिति के हेतु कार्य करते हैं और स्वयं भवसागर से पार कराने वाली नौका हैं।
I bow to Vishnu as Varaha, whose deeds are ever effortless and undertaken for the stability of the world, who is himself the boat that carries devotees across worldly existence.
