The root-nature of all existence -- the feminine womb of the unmanifest, the original substance from which every particle of the universe still unfolds.

Etymology · व्युत्पत्ति
From "mūla" (मूल) meaning root, origin, the foundational source -- and "prakṛti" (प्रकृति) meaning nature, the material cause of the universe, the primal substance from which all matter and energy unfold. She who is the root of Nature itself -- not a product of nature but its womb, not evolved but the seed from which all evolution begins.
अर्थ
भौतिकविद् इसे quantum vacuum कहते हैं -- वह अदृश्य, उबलता हुआ आधार जिससे सभी कण, सभी बल, सारा पदार्थ स्वतः उभरता है। यह ख़ाली नहीं -- हर दिखने वाली चीज़ से भरा हुआ। इतनी घनी संभावना से कंपित कि पूरा दृश्य ब्रह्मांड बस उसकी सतह पर एक पतली झाग है। सांख्य दार्शनिकों ने इसे तीन हज़ार साल पहले नाम दिया: मूलप्रकृति। मूल प्रकृति। अव्यक्त जिससे सभी व्यक्त चीज़ें प्रकट होती हैं। वह वृक्ष नहीं -- बीज से भी पहले का बीज, संभावना की संभावना। वह कारण है कि कुछ है, शून्य के बजाय। और यहाँ वह बात जो सब बदल देती है: मूलप्रकृति स्त्रीलिंग है। समस्त वास्तविकता का मूल पदार्थ -- हर पर्वत, हर सागर, हर तारा, तुम्हारे शरीर का हर परमाणु -- उसका शरीर है, अभी भी प्रकट हो रहा। तुम प्रकृति से अलग नहीं -- तुम प्रकृति हो, वाक्य के बीच में, अभी बोली जा रही।
कथा · From tradition
ईश्वरकृष्ण की सांख्यकारिका (श्लोक 3) और उसकी टीका मूलप्रकृति को अकारण कारण बताती है -- प्रधान, आदि। सृष्टि से पहले प्रकृति पूर्ण साम्य में है: सत्त्व, रजस्, तमस् -- परम संतुलन में, जैसे तीन नदियाँ एक ऐसी झील में मिली हों जिसमें कोई लहर एक को दूसरे से अलग न कर सके। फिर -- कोई ग्रंथ नहीं बताता क्यों -- संतुलन हिलता है। एक कंपन। गुण अलग होते हैं। सत्त्व प्रकाश बनकर उठता है। रजस् ऊर्जा बनकर फैलता है। तमस् पदार्थ बनकर सघन होता है। इस एक असंतुलन से पूरा ब्रह्मांड प्रपात की तरह बहता है: अहंकार, मन, इन्द्रियाँ, तत्त्व, शरीर, लोक। देवी भागवत (स्कंध 3, अध्याय 8) शाक्त पाठ जोड़ता है: यह निर्वैयक्तिक यांत्रिकी नहीं -- यह एक स्त्री है जो रचने का चुनाव कर रही है। मूलप्रकृति निष्क्रिय रूप से नहीं खुली -- उसने ब्रह्मांड बनने का निर्णय किया। वह कंपन दुर्घटना नहीं थी। वह इच्छा थी।
Modern Context · आज के संदर्भ में
भुवनेश्वर, ओडिशा। लिंगराज मंदिर से दो किलोमीटर दूर एक सरकारी स्कूल। वह सोलह साल की है। माँ घरों में सफ़ाई करती है। पिता साइकिल ठीक करते हैं। स्कूल में science lab नहीं, पर एक चीज़ है: एक smartphone जो बड़े भाई ने सूरत से भेजा जहाँ वह हीरा पॉलिश की unit में काम करता है। उस phone पर, रात 9 बजे tubelight में homework के बाद, वह MIT OpenCourseWare की physics lectures देखती है। हर शब्द नहीं समझती। पर आज रात screen पर professor कुछ कहता है जो pencil चबाना रुकवा देता है: सारा पदार्थ -- हर ठोस, हर तरल, हर गैस -- अधिकतर ख़ाली जगह है। तुम्हारे हाथ के परमाणु 99.99% शून्य हैं। जिसे तुम ठोस कहते हो, बस बलों का एक pattern है जो ख़ालीपन को थामे है। वह phone रखती है। अपने हाथ देखती है। वही हाथ जो बर्तन धोते हैं और school uniform तह करते हैं। 99.99% शून्य, एक pattern में बँधा। वह सरकारी स्कूल की ग़रीब लड़की नहीं -- वह बलों का एक pattern है जिसे ब्रह्मांड भुवनेश्वर में एक लड़की के आकार में थामे है -- और जो मूल पदार्थ तारे बनाता है, वही उसे बनाता है। वह मूल, जिससे यह प्रकृति अभी भी प्रकट हो रही है -- वह abstract दर्शन नहीं। वह उसके चेहरे पर वह भाव है जब उसे पता चलता है कि उसकी और तारों की माँ एक ही है।
Meditation · ध्यान
Sit or lie down in complete stillness. Close your eyes. Forget the room, the city, the planet. Go inward -- past your thoughts, past your memories, past even the sense of I. Find the silent space behind everything. It is dark. It is warm. It hums. This is not emptiness -- this is Mulaprakriti. The unmanifest fullness. Stay here. Do not try to see anything or understand anything. Just rest in the hum. Breathe naturally. After 11 minutes, begin to slowly return: first feel your body, then the room, then sounds, then open your eyes. Notice: everything you perceive has just emerged from that darkness. You have just watched creation happen.
Mantra Practice · मंत्र जप
Chant 108 times seated on the bare ground -- grass, soil, or stone. No synthetic material between you and the earth. Use a lotus-seed (kamal gatta) mala -- the lotus root is Mulaprakriti's symbol. Voice should emerge from the belly, not the throat -- deep, resonant, the way the earth itself would sound if it could chant. Best on Amavasya (new moon -- when manifestation returns to the root), during Chaitra Navaratri (spring creation), or whenever you feel lost and need to remember where you came from.
