The goddess already mounted -- she who does not ask the lion to lower itself but leaps upward to meet it, teaching that the seat is claimed not by permission but by ascending, and the mount was always waiting for exactly this rider.

Etymology · व्युत्पत्ति
From "siṃha" (सिंह) meaning lion -- and "ārūḍhā" (आरूढा) meaning she who has mounted, she who has ascended upon, from the root "ruh" (रुह्) meaning to climb, to rise, to take one's seat upon. Not merely sitting on the lion but having claimed it -- the way a queen claims a throne not by asking but by ascending. The grammar is past participle: the mounting has already happened. She is already seated. The question of whether she belongs there has already been answered.

हर औरत की ज़िंदगी में एक क्षण -- अगर ध्यान दे -- जब सवारी की इजाज़त माँगना बंद करती है और बस बैठ जाती है। घोड़ा, motorcycle, career, महत्वाकांक्षा, वह risk जो सबने कहा तुम्हारा नहीं। सिंहारूढा उस क्षण के बाद की देवी -- सवारी का फ़ैसला नहीं, जो साहस है, बल्कि फ़ैसले के बाद बैठी मुद्रा, जो सार्वभौमिकता। पहले से सिंह पर। औरतों को सिंह पर बैठना चाहिए या नहीं -- यह बहस उनसे नीचे। शाब्दिक -- ऊपर, बैठी, आगे बढ़ती, और सिंह विरोध नहीं कर रहा क्योंकि पहचानता है जो committee नहीं पहचानी: यही वह सवार जिसका इंतज़ार। हर औरत जो ऐसे कमरे में गई जो उसके लिए designed नहीं और ऐसी कुर्सी पर बैठी जो offer नहीं हुई -- meeting के किनारे खड़ी रहना बंद करके table पर बैठी -- जिस पर बैठने से मना किया गया उस पर बैठी और पाया कि वह चीज़ उसके साथ बेहतर चलती -- वही सिंहारूढा। Mount जीता नहीं -- पूरा हुआ। सवार सिंह में addition नहीं -- कारण कि सिंह को आख़िरकार दिशा मिली।

देवी माहात्म्य (अध्याय 2, श्लोक 18) दुर्गा के सिंह पर बैठने का क्षण -- किसी रानी के पालकी पर बैठने जैसा नहीं। ग्रंथ 'आरूढा' शब्द चलाता है -- वही जो राजा के युद्ध-रथ पर चढ़ने को। पैर सिंह की पीठ पर वैसे डाला जैसे योद्धा युद्ध-अश्व पर -- बिना हिचक, बिना समायोजन, बिना जाँचे कि सिंह comfortable है। वामन पुराण जोड़ता है: सिंह ने बैठने के लिए ख़ुद को नीचा नहीं किया -- वह कूदी। औरत के पैर और युद्ध-सिंह की पीठ का अंतर मामूली नहीं -- एक ऊर्ध्वगामी गति में तय किया जिसे ग्रंथ 'गगनस्पर्श' -- आकाश-स्पर्शी -- कहता है। छलांग घोषणा: mount को नीचा होने की ज़रूरत नहीं -- मैं उठकर मिलूँगी। स्कन्द पुराण एक विवरण जो हर domestication कथा उलटता: सिंह, जिसने किसी की बात नहीं मानी -- न हिमवान जिसने दिया, न इंद्र जो डरा -- उसका भार पीठ पर महसूस करके, साँस छोड़ी। गुर्राहट नहीं। समर्पण नहीं। साँस -- वह जो कुछ पूरी जंगली ज़िंदगी तनाव थामे रहा और आख़िरकार वह भार मिला जिसे उठाने के लिए बना।

Election night, बलरामपुर ज़िला, उत्तर प्रदेश की ग्राम पंचायत office। रात 11। वह चौंतीस साल की है। मतगणना हाथ से -- कागज़ी ballot, मिट्टी का तेल, block officer numbers पढ़ रहा, पति, सास, तीन male candidates, और सड़सठ ग्रामीण देख रहे। सरपंच की सीट एक सौ नौ votes से जीती। एक male candidate -- पूर्व सरपंच का बेटा -- तुरंत आपत्ति: गणना पक्षपाती। Block officer recount। एक सौ बारह से जीतती है -- तीन और, क्योंकि तीन ballot जो ग़लत pile में थे उसके। पूर्व सरपंच का बेटा बधाई दिए बिना जाता। सास, जिसने विरोधी को vote दिया, नहीं देखती। पति -- जिसने campaign तब support किया जब उसने independently contest करने की धमकी दी -- दो फ़ुट पीछे, मुस्कुराए या नहीं unsure। वह सरपंच की कुर्सी तक चलती है -- steel desk के पीछे plastic chair, गीले concrete और phenyl की गंध -- और बैठती है। ढहकर नहीं। शर्मिंदगी से फिसलकर नहीं। सिंहारूढा जैसे बैठती है -- एक ऊर्ध्वगामी, बिना-हिचक गति जो plastic chair को सिंहासन बनाती। कमरा पुनर्व्यवस्थित। Block officer 'सरपंच जी' कहता। Plastic chair ने पूर्व सरपंच उठाए जिन्होंने MGNREGA funds चुराए, जो कभी आए नहीं, जिनकी पत्नियों ने काम चलाया जब वे पान की दुकान पर ताश खेलते। आज रात वह औरत उठाती है जो एक सौ बारह से जीती और किसी ने कुर्सी खींचकर दी, इसका इंतज़ार नहीं किया। बैठी। सिंह ने साँस छोड़ी।

Sit in a chair -- any chair. Not cross-legged on the floor. A chair. Feel the seat beneath you. Now -- adjust your posture. Not gradually. In one motion: spine erect, shoulders back, chin level, hands on the armrests or firmly on your thighs. Feel the transformation -- from sitting IN a chair to occupying a chair, from being seated to being enthroned. Breathe with the throne: 4 counts in (I have mounted), 4 counts hold (I am here), 4 counts out (I am not leaving). After 9 rounds, feel the chair exhale beneath you -- the furniture recognizing its rider. Sit for 3 minutes in full occupation. This is not about the chair. It is about the way you sit in every room, every meeting, every space that was not designed for you but is now yours because you are in it.
Mantra Practice · मंत्र जप
Chant 108 times seated in the most prominent seat available -- the head of the table, the largest chair, the center of the room. Simharudha does not chant from the margins. Use a rudraksha mala. Voice should carry the resonance of someone already in place -- not arriving, not requesting, already seated. The tone of a woman who answered the question of whether she belongs by sitting down. Best on Tuesdays, during Navaratri's Ashtami (the night the lion charges), or any morning before you walk into a room that has not yet learned your name.
