हर वर्ष 30 करोड़+ भारतीय किसी न किसी रूप में तीर्थयात्रा -- धार्मिक उद्देश्यों हेतु मनुष्यों का पृथ्वी पर सबसे बड़ा सामूहिक आवागमन। 2019 प्रयागराज कुम्भ मेला अकेले अनुमानित 24 करोड़ -- फ़्रांस, जर्मनी और UK की संयुक्त जनसंख्या से अधिक। चार धाम यात्रा (बदरीनाथ, केदारनाथ, गंगोत्री, यमुनोत्री) वार्षिक 50 लाख+। वाराणसी 60-80 लाख। तिरुपति प्रतिदिन 60,000-80,000।
ये पर्यटक नहीं। तीर्थ यात्री -- विशिष्ट आध्यात्मिक उद्देश्य: तीर्थ पहुँचना, जल में स्नान, अनुष्ठान, और रूपान्तरित लौटना।
'तीर्थ' संस्कृत मूल 'तृ' -- पार करना। तीर्थ घाट, जहाँ संसार-नदी पार कर मोक्ष-तट। व्यावहारिक रूप में -- वो स्थान जहाँ सदियों की पूजा की संचित आध्यात्मिक ऊर्जा, भूदृश्य की प्राकृतिक शक्ति (नदियाँ, पर्वत, वन), और शास्त्रीय धार्मिक महत्व -- मिलकर उच्च आध्यात्मिक पहुँच का क्षेत्र।
परम्परा कई श्रेणियाँ: नदी तीर्थ -- सप्त सिन्धु (गंगा, यमुना, गोदावरी, सरस्वती, नर्मदा, सिन्धु, कावेरी)। पर्वत तीर्थ: कैलाश, अरुणाचल, गोवर्धन, वैष्णो देवी। मन्दिर तीर्थ: चार धाम, 12 ज्योतिर्लिंग, 51 शक्ति पीठ, 108 दिव्य देसम। संगम तीर्थ: नदी-संगम, विशेषकर प्रयागराज त्रिवेणी संगम।
पर परम्परा आन्तरिक तीर्थ भी पहचानती है। जाबाल उपनिषद्: सच्चा तीर्थ भौगोलिक स्थान नहीं, वैराग्य, ज्ञान और समर्पण की आन्तरिक अवस्था। बाह्य तीर्थयात्रा आन्तरिक के लिए training wheels -- काशी जाओ पार करने का अभ्यास, ताकि अन्तिम पार (मृत्यु) आए तो तैयार।
तीर्थमन्तर्गतं यस्य शमो दमस्तथा। क्षमा चैव दया सत्यं न तीर्थफलमश्नुते॥

काशी -- वो नगरी जो अज्ञानी मरने नहीं देती
सब तीर्थों में काशी (वाराणसी) सर्वोच्च। स्कन्द पुराण का काशी खण्ड: काशी पृथ्वी पर नहीं -- पृथ्वी काशी पर। नगरी एक साथ भौतिक और आध्यात्मिक आयामों में, और जो इसकी सीमाओं में मरे उसे शिव स्वयं मृत्यु-क्षण में तारक मन्त्र फुसफुसाते -- मोक्ष-गारण्टी।
इसीलिए हज़ारों वृद्ध हिन्दू अन्तिम वर्ष वाराणसी। काशी के मुक्ति भवन -- जहाँ असाध्य रोगी पवित्र नगरी में मरने, पुरोहित चौबीसों घण्टे राम नाम। ये विषादपूर्ण नहीं -- तीर्थयात्रा सिद्धान्त की चरम अभिव्यक्ति: तीर्थ का उद्देश्य घाट पहुँचना, तो काशी में मरना अन्तिम पार, सबसे शक्तिशाली घाट पर।
