Etymology · व्युत्पत्ति
From 'Madana' (मदन, Kamadeva — the god of desire, whose name means 'intoxicator') + 'mohana' (मोहन, enchanter) — He who enchants even the god of desire. The Enchanter of the Enchanter. Desire itself falls in love with Krishna — the force that makes all beings want is itself rendered wanting.
अर्थ
कामदेव खलनायक नहीं। दुनिया का इंजन है — वो शक्ति जो फूल को धूप चाहने पर मजबूर करती है, नदी को सागर, छात्र को सीखना, प्रेमी को पकड़ना। बिना इच्छा के ब्रह्मांड जम जाए। पर इच्छा की भी सीमा — चीज़ें चाहने पर मजबूर कर सकती है, पर इतना गहरा चाहना कि चाहना ख़ुद पूर्ति बन जाए — नहीं कर सकती। कृष्ण इच्छा के साथ यही करते हैं: मोहित करते हैं। इच्छा को प्रेम में गिराते हैं, जिसका मतलब इच्छा को पता चलता है कि वो भी अपूर्ण है। मोहित करने वाला मोहित हो जाता है। जो सबको चाहने पर मजबूर करता है, अब ख़ुद चाहता है। मदनमोहन उसका नाम है जो तब होता है जब तुम्हारी इच्छा भी काफ़ी बड़ी नहीं — जो तुम्हें खींच रहा है वो हर भूख से ज़्यादा है, और वो अतिरिक्त ख़ुद एक नई तृप्ति बन जाता है। पाने की तृप्ति नहीं। किसी ऐसी चीज़ को चाहने की तृप्ति जो तुम्हारे चाहने के लायक है।
कथा · From tradition
ब्रह्म वैवर्त पुराण और लोक परंपरा: कामदेव, सभी प्राणियों पर अपनी शक्ति से उत्साहित, एक बार कृष्ण पर तीर चलाने की कोशिश करता है। गन्ने का धनुष, भौंरों की प्रत्यंचा, पाँच पुष्प-बाण — जो देवताओं का भी संयम तोड़ दें। बाण कृष्ण पर लगते हैं और माला बन जाते हैं। कामदेव का धनुष हाथ से गिर जाता है। इसलिए नहीं कि कृष्ण ने बाण काटे — इसलिए कि कृष्ण का चेहरा देखकर कामदेव ख़ुद ऐसी सुंदरता से बिंध गया जो उसके किसी बाण से बड़ी। इच्छा के देवता ने पहली बार इच्छा अनुभव की — और पाया कि सुंदरता का विषय होना उसका कारण होने से अनंत गुना शक्तिशाली है। कृष्ण के चरणों में गिरकर कहा: 'मैंने ब्रह्मांड को चाहने पर मजबूर किया। पर आज तक ख़ुद कुछ नहीं चाहा।' शिक्षा: एक सुंदरता जो इच्छा को भी छोटा महसूस कराए — और वो छोटापन, विरोधाभास से, इच्छा की सबसे बड़ी पूर्ति है।
Modern Context · आज के संदर्भ में
Mumbai में successful creative director — Worli, sea-view office। एक दशक लोगों को चीज़ें चहाने पर मजबूर किया: जूते, फ़ोन, छुट्टी, toothpaste। बहुत अच्छी हो इसमें। Craving trigger करने वाला exact colour temperature, तीस सेकंड ad में cut का सही millisecond, aspiration का algorithm — सब पता है। Awards जीते। Brands compete करते हैं। फिर एक Sunday, Chhatrapati Shivaji Museum, school के बाद नहीं गई। Miniature painting gallery में घूमती हो। धूलभरे शीशे के पीछे — 18वीं सदी का Kangra का Pahari miniature: कदम्ब पेड़ के नीचे बाँसुरी बजाते कृष्ण, सुनती गोपियाँ। Postcard जितनी। रंग फीके। Frame टूटा। और रोक लेती है जैसे portfolio में कुछ कभी नहीं रोका। Technically brilliant इसलिए नहीं — team एक घंटे में Photoshop में बना दे। इसलिए कि जिसने बनाई वो किसी को कुछ चहाने पर मजबूर नहीं कर रहा था। चाहने को ख़ुद पकड़ने की कोशिश कर रहा था — गोपी की गर्दन का विशेष मोड़, बाँसुरी का झुकाव, आवाज़ चित्रित करने की असंभवता। बीस मिनट खड़ी। Lunch reservation छूटा। शाम को personal laptop पर blank canvas खोलती हो — client के लिए नहीं, सालों में पहली बार — कुछ बनाने की कोशिश जो इच्छा को ख़ुद चुप करा दे। Fail होती हो। पर fail सबसे ईमानदार काम लगता है दस साल में। वही मदनमोहन। जब इच्छा किसी ऐसी चीज़ से मिले जो उससे बड़ी हो, और वो अतिरिक्त घर आने जैसा लगे।
Meditation · ध्यान
Sit and name three things you currently desire — career goals, material wants, relational hopes. Hold them clearly. Now ask: what is the desire beneath these desires? What does the wanting itself want? Sit with that question for 5 minutes. Often, beneath the surface desires, there is a single, nameless pull — a desire to be complete, to be home, to be known. That bottommost desire — the desire beneath all desires — is the one Madanamohana enchants. He does not fulfil it. He makes it fall in love with itself. Rest in that deepest wanting for 3 minutes. Do not try to resolve it. It is already the prayer.
Mantra Practice · मंत्र जप
Chant 108 times in the quiet hour after midnight — the hour when surface desires sleep and the deepest ones emerge. Use a tulsi mala. Voice should be yearning but not desperate — the voice of someone who has found the thing worth wanting. Best on Purnima, Janmashtami, or any night when the wanting is louder than the mind.

इच्छा ने बाण चलाए। मालाएँ बन गए। इसलिए नहीं कि अभेद्य था बल्कि इसलिए कि इच्छा ने जो भी निशाना कभी लगाया था उससे ज़्यादा सुंदर था।
