Ganga Ashtakam

devi sureśvari bhagavati gaṅge tribhuvanatāriṇi tarala-taraṅge । śaṅkara-mauli-vihāriṇi vimale mama matir āstāṃ tava pada-kamale ।।1।।

हे देवी गङ्गे, देवों की स्वामिनी, हे भगवती! आप अपनी चंचल लहरों से तीनों लोकों का उद्धार करने वाली हैं। आप भगवान शंकर की जटाओं में विहार करने वाली और परम पवित्र हैं — मेरी बुद्धि सदा आपके चरणकमलों में स्थित रहे।

O Goddess Ganga, sovereign of the gods, O divine and blessed one, you who deliver all three worlds with your playful dancing waves! You who sport freely in the matted locks of Lord Shiva, you who are utterly pure and spotless — may my mind rest forever at your lotus feet.

bhāgīrathi sukha-dāyini mātas tava jala-mahimā nigame khyātaḥ । nāhaṃ jāne tava mahimānaṃ pāhi kṛpāmayi mām ajñānam ।।2।।

हे भागीरथी, हे सुखदायिनी माता! आपके जल की महिमा वेदों और शास्त्रों में युगों से प्रसिद्ध है। मैं आपकी महानता को पूर्णतः नहीं जानता; हे कृपामयी माँ, इस अज्ञानी को अपनी शरण में लेकर रक्षा करें।

O Bhagirathi, O Mother, bestower of all happiness — the glory of your sacred waters has been celebrated throughout the Vedas and scriptures since ancient times. I, an ignorant soul, cannot fathom the full measure of your greatness; O compassionate one, please protect and uplift even this unworthy, ignorant being.

hari-pada-pādya-taraṅgiṇi gaṅge hima-vidhu-muktā-dhavala-taraṅge । dūrī-kuru mama duṣkṛti-bhāraṃ kuru kṛpayā bhava-sāgara-pāram ।।3।।

हे गङ्गे, आप भगवान विष्णु के चरणों से उत्पन्न पवित्र धारा हैं, आपकी तरंगें हिम, चन्द्रमा और मोतियों की भाँति श्वेत हैं। कृपा करके मेरे पापों का भार दूर करें और इस भवसागर को पार करवाएँ।

O Ganga, you who surge forth as the sacred water that bathed Lord Vishnu's feet, your waves gleam white as snow, the moon, and precious pearls! By your grace, remove the heavy burden of my accumulated sins, and carry me across the vast and terrifying ocean of worldly existence to the shore of liberation.

tava jalam amalaṃ yena nipītaṃ parama-padaṃ khalu tena gṛhītam । mātar gaṅge tvayi yo bhaktaḥ kila taṃ draṣṭuṃ na yamaḥ śaktaḥ ।।4।।

हे माता गङ्गे, जिसने भी आपके निर्मल जल का पान किया है, उसने निश्चय ही परमपद की प्राप्ति कर ली। आपका जो भक्त है, उसे देखने या उसके पास आने में यमराज भी असमर्थ हैं।

Whoever has drunk your immaculate, pure waters, O Ganga, has verily attained the supreme state of liberation — this is certain. O Mother Ganga, the one who is truly devoted to you — even Yama, the lord of death, does not have the power to approach or claim such a person.

patita-uddhāriṇi jāhnavi gaṅge khaṇḍita-giri-vara-maṇḍita-bhaṅge । bhīṣma-janani he muni-vara-kanye patita-nivāriṇi tri-bhuvana-dhanye ।।5।।

हे जाह्नवी, हे गङ्गे, आप पतितों का उद्धार करने वाली हैं। आपकी लहरें पर्वतों को काटती हुई निर्बाध बहती हैं। हे भीष्म की माता, मुनिवरों की कन्या, पतितों को पतन से बचाने वाली — आप तीनों लोकों में धन्य हैं।

O Jahnavi, O Ganga, uplifter of the fallen, your magnificent waves cleave through the greatest of mountains in their ceaseless journey! O mother of the great Bhishma, O daughter of the foremost of sages, you who prevent the fallen state of sinful souls — you are the truly blessed one of all three worlds.

kalpa-latām iva phala-dāṃ loke praṇamati yas tvāṃ na patati śoke । pārāvāra-vihāriṇi gaṅge vimukha-yuvati-kṛta-mala-apāṅge ।।6।।

हे गङ्गे, आप इस संसार में कल्पलता के समान सभी इच्छाएँ पूरी करती हैं — जो आपको प्रणाम करता है वह कभी शोक में नहीं पड़ता। आप तट से तट तक विहार करने वाली हैं और आपके कटाक्ष मात्र से सारी मलिनता नष्ट हो जाती है।

Like the celestial wish-fulfilling vine Kalpalata, you grant all desired fruits to those in this world — whoever bows to you never falls into the pit of sorrow. O Ganga, you who roam from shore to shore across the vast ocean, even a single compassionate side-glance of yours destroys all impurities.

indra-mukuṭa-maṇi-rājita-caraṇe sura-vara-muni-vara-śekhara-śaraṇe । pāpa-hāriṇi paritāpa-hāriṇi praṇata-janārti-hare jaya jaya gaṅge ।।7।।

हे गङ्गे, इन्द्र के मुकुट के मणियों से आपके चरण सुशोभित हैं, देवशिरोमणि और मुनिश्रेष्ठ आपकी शरण लेते हैं। हे पापहारिणी, दाहशमनी, प्रणत जनों की पीड़ा हरने वाली — आपकी जय हो, जय हो!

O Ganga, whose feet are resplendent with the jewels of Indra's crown, who is the supreme refuge of the greatest gods and sages! O remover of sins, O destroyer of burning anguish and pain, O alleviator of every affliction of those who bow before you — glory, glory to you, O Ganga!

gaṅgāṣṭakam idaṃ puṇyaṃ yaḥ paṭhet prayataḥ sadā । sarva-pāpa-viśuddhātmā viṣṇu-lokaṃ sa gacchati ।।8।।

जो कोई इस पवित्र गङ्गाष्टकम् का सदा पवित्रता और अनुशासन के साथ पाठ करता है, उसकी आत्मा सभी पापों से शुद्ध होकर भगवान विष्णु के लोक को प्राप्त होती है।

Whoever recites this sacred and meritorious Ganga Ashtakam always, with purity and discipline of body and mind — that person, having had their soul purified of all accumulated sins, attains the supreme realm of Lord Vishnu, the abode of eternal liberation.
