Lalitha Ashtakam

lalitāṃ lokajananīṃ lāvaṇyāmṛtavāridhim । śaṅkarīṃ śarmadātrīṃ tāṃ namāmi lalitāmbikām ।।1।।

मैं ललिता को नमन करता हूँ, जो सम्पूर्ण जगत की माता हैं और सौंदर्य के अमृत की अथाह सागर हैं। वे शाङ्करी हैं, जो अपने भक्तों को अपार आनंद और मंगल प्रदान करती हैं। उन दिव्य माता ललिताम्बिका को मैं सादर प्रणाम करता हूँ।

I bow to Lalitha, the playful and beautiful one, who is the mother of all worlds and an ocean of the nectar of grace. She is the auspicious Shankari who bestows boundless happiness upon her devotees. To that divine mother Lalitambika, I offer my most reverent salutations.

kamalākṣīṃ kāmakalāṃ kalyāṇaguṇaśālinīm । kalpadrumāśritāṃ devīṃ namāmi lalitāmbikām ।।2।।

मैं उस देवी को नमन करता हूँ जिनके नेत्र कमल के समान हैं और जो काम की दिव्य कला की साक्षात् स्वरूपा हैं। वे समस्त कल्याणकारी गुणों से सम्पन्न हैं जो आत्मा को उन्नत करते हैं। वे कल्पवृक्ष के आश्रय में विराजमान हैं और अपने शरणागत भक्तों की गहरी कामनाओं को पूर्ण करने के लिए सदा तत्पर रहती हैं।

I bow to the goddess whose eyes are like blooming lotuses and who is the very art of desire made divine through wisdom. She is abundantly endowed with all auspicious qualities and virtues that elevate the soul. She dwells beneath the wish-fulfilling Kalpadruma tree, ever ready to grant the deepest longings of those who take refuge in her.

śrīpurāntaḥpurāvāsāṃ śrīcakranilayālayām । śrīvidyāṃ śrīmahādevīṃ namāmi lalitāmbikām ।।3।।

मैं उस महादेवी को प्रणाम करता हूँ जो दिव्य नगरी श्रीपुर के अन्तःपुर में निवास करती हैं और जिनका शाश्वत आवास पवित्र श्रीचक्र है। वे स्वयं श्रीविद्या हैं — वह परम और गोपनीय ज्ञान जो साधक को अज्ञान के बंधन से मुक्त करता है। उन भव्य ललिताम्बिका को, समस्त मंगल की महादेवी को, मैं अपनी गहरी श्रद्धा अर्पित करता हूँ।

I bow to the great goddess who resides in the innermost chamber of Shripura, the luminous divine city, and whose eternal home is the sacred Sri Chakra. She herself is Shri Vidya, the supreme and secret knowledge that liberates the seeker from the bondage of ignorance. To that magnificent Lalitambika, the great goddess of all auspiciousness, I offer my deepest salutations.

brahmaviṣṇuśivādīnāṃ jananīṃ jagatāmapi । sarveśvarīṃ sarvamayīṃ namāmi lalitāmbikām ।।4।।

मैं ललिताम्बिका को प्रणाम करता हूँ, जो समस्त लोकों की ही नहीं, बल्कि ब्रह्मा, विष्णु, शिव और सभी देवताओं की भी आदि माता हैं। वे सर्वेश्वरी हैं — समूचे ब्रह्माण्ड की परम शासिका, और सर्वमयी हैं — जो सर्वत्र व्याप्त और सब में अन्तर्निहित हैं। अस्तित्व में ऐसा कुछ भी नहीं जो उनके स्वरूप के बाहर हो, और इस सर्वव्यापी माँ को मैं श्रद्धापूर्वक नमन करता हूँ।

I bow to Lalitambika, who is the primordial mother not only of all worlds but also of Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, and all the deities. She is Sarvesvari, the sovereign ruler of the entire cosmos, and Sarvamayī, the one who pervades and is immanent in all things. There is nothing in existence that is outside of her being, and to this all-encompassing mother I offer my reverent salutations.

pañcapretāsanāsīnāṃ pañcabrahmasvarūpiṇīm । chinmayīṃ paramānandāṃ namāmi lalitāmbikām ।।5।।

मैं ललिताम्बिका को प्रणाम करता हूँ, जो पाँच प्रेतों — ब्रह्मा, विष्णु, रुद्र, ईश्वर और सदाशिव — से निर्मित सिंहासन पर विराजमान हैं, यह दर्शाते हुए कि वे ही समस्त ब्रह्माण्डीय कार्यों की चेतन शक्ति हैं। वे स्वयं पाँच ब्रह्म के स्वरूपा हैं और शुद्ध चिन्मयी हैं — सम्पूर्णतः दिव्य चेतना से निर्मित। वे परमानन्दा हैं — वह सर्वोच्च आनंद जो परम सत्य का स्वभाव ही है।

I bow to Lalitambika, who is seated upon the throne formed by the five inert Brahmas — Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra, Isvara, and Sadashiva — who become her divine footstool, signifying that she is the animating consciousness behind all cosmic functions. She herself embodies the five aspects of Brahman and is pure chinmaya, made entirely of transcendent consciousness. She is Paramananda, the supreme bliss that is the very nature of ultimate reality.

ikṣukodaṇḍahastāṃ ca pañcabāṇadharāṃ śivām । pāśāṅkuśadharāṃ devīṃ namāmi lalitāmbikām ।।6।।

मैं उस मंगलमयी देवी को प्रणाम करता हूँ जो अपने हाथों में इक्षुकोदण्ड धारण करती हैं — अनुशासन से मधुर मन का प्रतीक — और जो पाँच पुष्पबाण धारण करती हैं जो दिव्य नियंत्रण में आई पाँच इंद्रियों को दर्शाते हैं। अपने अन्य हाथों में वे दिव्य करुणा का पाश धारण करती हैं जो भक्त आत्मा को उनसे बाँधता है, और अनुग्रह का अंकुश जो साधक को सही मार्ग पर निर्देशित करता है। उन भव्य रूप से सुसज्जित ललिताम्बिका को मैं नमन करता हूँ।

I bow to the auspicious goddess who holds a sugarcane bow in her hands, symbolic of the mind sweetened by discipline, and who bears five flower-tipped arrows representing the five senses brought under divine mastery. In her other hands she holds the noose of divine compassion that binds the devoted soul to her, and the goad of grace that directs the seeker along the right path. To this magnificently armed Lalitambika I offer my salutations.

sṛṣṭisthitivināśānāṃ śaktibhūtāṃ sanātanīm । guṇāśrayāṃ nirguṇāṃ ca namāmi lalitāmbikām ।।7।।

मैं ललिताम्बिका को प्रणाम करता हूँ, जो सनातन शक्ति हैं — वह आदि शक्ति जो सृष्टि, स्थिति और संहार की तीन महान ब्रह्माण्डीय प्रक्रियाओं का आधार है और उन्हें संचालित करती है। वे एक साथ गुणाश्रया हैं — तीनों गुणों सत्त्व, रज और तम का आधार — और फिर भी वे निर्गुणा हैं, समस्त गुणों और विशेषणों से परे। यह साकार और निराकार का विरोधाभास ही उनका शाश्वत रहस्य है।

I bow to Lalitambika, who is the eternal Shakti — the primal power that underlies and drives the three great cosmic processes of creation, preservation, and dissolution. She is simultaneously Gunashraya, the very foundation and substratum of the three gunas — sattva, rajas, and tamas — and yet she is Nirguna, entirely beyond all qualities and attributes, transcending the very web of existence she sustains. This paradox of the personal and the transcendent is her eternal mystery.

lalitāṣṭakametaddhi bhaktyā yaḥ paṭhate naraḥ । lalitāpriyatāmeti sarvān kāmānavāpnuyāt ।।8।।

यह फलश्रुति है — पाठ के फल की घोषणा: जो भी इस ललिताष्टकम् को सच्ची श्रद्धा और देवी की ओर उन्मुख हृदय के साथ पढ़ता या पाठ करता है, वह ललिता को प्रिय हो जाता है और उनका दिव्य अनुग्रह प्राप्त करता है। ऐसा धन्य भक्त अपनी समस्त उचित कामनाओं की पूर्ति पाता है, क्योंकि माँ का प्रिय होना ही सब कुछ पाना है। इन आठ श्लोकों को सुनने या पढ़ने वाले सभी लोग उनकी शाश्वत कृपा में आश्रित हों।

This is the phala shruti — the declaration of the fruits of recitation: whoever reads or recites this Lalitha Ashtakam with sincere devotion and a heart turned toward the goddess shall become truly dear to Lalitha herself, winning her divine affection and grace. Such a blessed devotee will attain the fulfillment of all wholesome desires, for to be beloved of the mother is to lack nothing that truly matters. May all who hear or recite these eight verses be cradled in her eternal grace.
