प्रलयकाल में सब कुछ नष्ट करने वाले, महा-संहारक

कौषीतकी उपनिषद में 'प्रतर्दन' दिवोदास का पुत्र है जो इन्द्र से ब्रह्मज्ञान प्राप्त करता है। प्रतर्दन भगवान वो हैं जो प्रलय (cosmic dissolution) में सब कुछ नष्ट करते हैं ताकि नई सृष्टि हो सके। भारत में हर साल बाढ़ आती है, पुरानी फ़सल नष्ट होती है, और फिर नई उगती है। यह प्रतर्दन का वार्षिक चक्र है: विनाश के बिना नवनिर्माण सम्भव नहीं।
