Subramanya Ashtakam

ṣaḍānanaṃ kuṅkumaraktavarṇaṃ mahāmatiṃ divyamayūravāhanam। rudrasya sūnuṃ suralokanāthaṃ brahmaṇyadevam śaraṇaṃ prapadye।।1।।

मैं ब्रह्मण्यदेव की शरण लेता हूँ — जो षड्मुख हैं, कुङ्कुम के समान रक्तवर्ण हैं, महाबुद्धिमान हैं और दिव्य मयूर पर विराजमान हैं। वे रुद्र (शिव) के पुत्र और समस्त देवलोक के स्वामी हैं। ऐसे परम तेजस्वी देव के चरणों में मैं पूर्ण समर्पण करता हूँ।

I take refuge in Brahmanya Deva — the six-faced one, radiant with the red hue of kumkum, of supreme intellect, riding his divine peacock. He is the son of Rudra (Shiva) and the lord of all the celestial realms. To this resplendent deity I offer my complete surrender.

jagaddhitārthaṃ navaśaktiyuktaṃ jagatprabhuṃ nirjitaṣaḍripuṃ ca। śaktiṃ gṛhītvā kukuṭadhvajaṃ taṃ brahmaṇyadevam śaraṇaṃ prapadye।।2।।

मैं ब्रह्मण्यदेव की शरण लेता हूँ — जो समस्त जगत के कल्याण के लिए कार्यरत हैं, नव शक्तियों से युक्त हैं और जगत के स्वामी हैं। उन्होंने षड्रिपुओं को जीत लिया है और अपने हाथ में शक्ति-वेल धारण किए हुए हैं, जिनकी ध्वजा पर कुक्कुट (मुर्गा) विराजमान है। ऐसे पराक्रमी और करुणामय देव के चरणों में मैं नमन करता हूँ।

I take refuge in Brahmanya Deva — who works tirelessly for the welfare of all worlds, who is endowed with nine divine powers, and who is the supreme lord of the universe. He has conquered the six inner enemies and holds the divine Vel (spear) in his hand, with the rooster emblazoned on his victorious banner. To such a mighty and compassionate lord I surrender.

kumāramēkaṃ dviradāsya vaktraṃ trinetrapuṃtraṃ trijagadguruṃ ca। caturbhujādhyakṣamanantaśaktiṃ brahmaṇyadevam śaraṇaṃ prapadye।।3।।

मैं ब्रह्मण्यदेव की शरण लेता हूँ — जो सदा युवा कुमार हैं, गजमुख गणेश के बंधु हैं और त्रिनेत्रधारी शिव के पुत्र हैं। वे तीनों लोकों के परम गुरु हैं, चतुर्भुज स्वरूप में सृष्टि का अधीक्षण करते हैं और अनंत शक्ति के स्वामी हैं। ऐसे सर्वशक्तिमान देव के चरणों में मैं अपना सब कुछ अर्पण करता हूँ।

I take refuge in Brahmanya Deva — the eternally youthful Kumara, closely associated with the elephant-faced Ganesha, and the son of the three-eyed Shiva. He is the supreme teacher of all three worlds, the four-armed lord who oversees all creation, and the one who possesses infinite, boundless power. In him I place my complete trust and surrender.

pañcākṣaraṃ pañcamavedasāraṃ ṣaḍakṣaraṃ ṣaṇmukhasannidhānam। saptārcirūpaṃ tridaśādhināthaṃ brahmaṇyadevam śaraṇaṃ prapadye।।4।।

मैं ब्रह्मण्यदेव की शरण लेता हूँ — जो पञ्चाक्षर मंत्र के साकार रूप हैं और पञ्चम वेद के सार हैं। वे षडक्षर मंत्र 'शरवणभव' में निहित हैं और षण्मुख के सानिध्य में सदा विराजमान हैं। वे सप्त अर्चि (सात ज्वालाओं) के रूप में प्रकाशित हैं और तीनों लोकों के देवों के परम नाथ हैं।

I take refuge in Brahmanya Deva — who is the living embodiment of the five-syllable Panchakshara mantra and the very essence of the fifth Veda. He is enshrined within the six-syllable Shadakshara mantra (Saravanabhava), dwelling eternally in the presence of his six faces. He shines as the seven-flamed divine light and is the supreme overlord of all the thirty devas.

aṣṭāṅgayogāntaralabdhadīptiṃ navadvāranāthaṃ paramātmatattvam। daśāsyaśatrordayitaṃ sureśaṃ brahmaṇyadevam śaraṇaṃ prapadye।।5।।

मैं ब्रह्मण्यदेव की शरण लेता हूँ — जिनकी दीप्ति अष्टांग योग की गहराई से प्राप्त होती है और जो नव द्वारों (शरीर के नौ द्वारों) के नाथ हैं। वे परमात्मा के परम सत्य हैं, देवताओं के प्रिय ईश्वर हैं और दशानन रावण के शत्रु के रूप में पूजित हैं। उनमें सभी योग और सभी ज्ञान का परम उद्गम है।

I take refuge in Brahmanya Deva — whose radiance is attained through the innermost depths of the eight-limbed yoga, and who is the lord of the nine gates of the human body. He is the very truth of the Supreme Self, the beloved lord of the gods, and the one whose divine glory is celebrated as the destroyer of the ten-headed Ravana's forces. In him all yoga and all wisdom culminate.

ekādaśadvandvavinirmuktatṃ taṃ dvādaśabhujaiḥ pariveṣṭitaṃ ca। trayodaśabhyo namitaṃ sureśaṃ brahmaṇyadevam śaraṇaṃ prapadye।।6।।

मैं ब्रह्मण्यदेव की शरण लेता हूँ — जो ग्यारह द्वन्द्वों (जैसे सुख-दुःख, गर्मी-सर्दी) से पूर्णतः मुक्त हैं और बारह दिव्य भुजाओं से युक्त हैं जो समस्त सृष्टि पर उनकी सम्पूर्ण शक्ति को दर्शाती हैं। तेरह दिव्य ऋषि और देवगण उन्हें प्रणाम करते हैं। ऐसे अतींद्रिय देवेश्वर को मैं नमन करता हूँ।

I take refuge in Brahmanya Deva — who is completely liberated from the eleven pairs of opposites (such as joy and sorrow, heat and cold), and who is gloriously surrounded by his twelve divine arms that represent his complete power over all creation. He is the lord whom the thirteen divine sages and celestial forces bow before in reverence. I surrender to this transcendent lord of the gods.

skandaṃ guhaṃ śaktidhāraṃ kumāraṃ krauñcārimagnīṃ vijayaṃ śaraṇyam। bhaktapriyaṃ vedavibhuṃ viśālaṃ brahmaṇyadevam śaraṇaṃ prapadye।।7।।

मैं ब्रह्मण्यदेव की शरण लेता हूँ — जो स्कन्द, गुह, शक्तिधर, कुमार, क्रौञ्चारि, अग्निज और विजय हैं। वे समस्त शरणागतों के परम आश्रय हैं, भक्तों के प्रिय हैं, समस्त वेदों में व्याप्त हैं और सर्वव्यापी विशाल दिव्य उपस्थिति हैं। ऐसे बहुनामधारी परम देव के चरणों में मैं प्रणाम करता हूँ।

I take refuge in Brahmanya Deva — who is Skanda, Guha, the wielder of the divine Shakti-Vel, the eternal youth Kumara, the destroyer of Mount Krauncha, the fire-born one, and the personification of victory itself. He is the ultimate refuge of all who seek shelter, supremely dear to his devotees, the lord who pervades all the Vedas, and the vast, all-encompassing divine presence.

idaṃ tu ṣaṇmātṛkaputra puṇyaṃ subrahmaṇyāṣṭakametat uktam। paṭhanti ye bhaktipur aḥsareṇa te prāpnuvan bhuktiṃ ca śivasya muktim।।8।।

यह पवित्र और पुण्यप्रद सुब्रह्मण्याष्टकम् — जो षण्मातृका के पुत्र की स्तुति में रचित है — इस प्रकार कहा गया है। जो लोग भक्तिभाव को सर्वोपरि रखते हुए इन आठ श्लोकों का पाठ करते हैं, वे इस लोक में भोग (सांसारिक समृद्धि) और परलोक में शिव की कृपा से मुक्ति — दोनों को प्राप्त करते हैं। भक्त को भुक्ति और मुक्ति दोनों का वरदान प्राप्त होता है।

This sacred and meritorious Subramanya Ashtakam — composed in honor of the son of the six divine Krittika mothers — has thus been composed and proclaimed. Those who recite these eight verses with sincere devotion as the foremost act of their heart shall attain both worldly prosperity (bhukti) and the supreme liberation (mukti) that leads to the auspicious grace of Shiva. Both enjoyment of life and final liberation are the twin blessings bestowed upon the devoted seeker.
