Nirguna
The quality-less ground — the penultimate name of the absolute theme, stripping every attribute from the divine to reveal what remains when nothing remains: the presence that holds you in Room 4B at 3 AM when every image of God has failed and the only thing left is the ground you are standing on.

Etymology · व्युत्पत्ति
From Sanskrit 'nir' (निर्, without, devoid of, free from) + 'guṇa' (गुण, quality, attribute, the three fundamental modes of nature — sattva, rajas, tamas) — He who is without qualities. Not 'whose qualities are unknown.' Without. Zero. The absolute stripped of every description, every adjective, every feature that the mind could use to grasp it. The God that cannot be thought, because thought requires form, and Nirguna has none.
अर्थ
चौरासी नाम पहले श्रृंखला विष्णु बताकर शुरू: स्वप्न, दया, सुंदरता, भुजाएँ, रंग, नेत्र, वस्त्र। हर नाम गुण जोड़ा। निर्गुण सब घटाता। गुण झूठे इसलिए नहीं — अपनी वास्तविकता के स्तर पर सच। पर सगुण रूप के वर्णन — गुणों वाला, मन जो पकड़ सके। निर्गुण — हर गुण हटाने पर विष्णु क्या। चार भुजाएँ हटाओ। नीली त्वचा। शंख, चक्र, गदा, पद्म। कौस्तुभ, वनमाला, पीताम्बर। ब्रह्मांडीय सागर, शेषनाग, स्वप्न। छाती से लक्ष्मी। क्या बचा? शून्य नहीं। सबका आधार — पर featureless, जैसे आकाश: ख़ाली नहीं, features के लिए बहुत विशाल। निर्गुण वह नाम जो परम को दीवार पर poster बनने से बचाता। धर्मशास्त्र का safety valve — हर छवि, नाम, प्रार्थना चाँद की ओर इशारा करती उँगली, चाँद उँगली नहीं। चौरासी नाम उँगली देखते रहे। निर्गुण: अब देखो कहाँ इशारा।
कथा · From tradition
बृहदारण्यक उपनिषद (2.3.6) निर्गुण शिक्षा दो शब्दों में जो negative theology का पूरा इतिहास: 'नेति नेति' — यह नहीं, यह नहीं। यज्ञवल्क्य, उपनिषद काल के महानतम ऋषि, से ब्रह्म का वर्णन पूछा। उत्तर वर्णन नहीं। व्यवस्थित इनकार। ब्रह्म बड़ा? नेति। छोटा? नेति। सचेतन? नेति। अचेतन? नेति। अच्छा? नेति। आत्मा? नेति। हर गुण rejected। हर विशेषता stripped। और हर 'नेति' के बाद जो बचे — अपचयनीय शेष जो negate नहीं हो सकता क्योंकि गुण नहीं, गुणों का आधार — वही निर्गुण ब्रह्म। यज्ञवल्क्य नहीं कहते 'ब्रह्म कुछ नहीं।' कहते 'ब्रह्म कोई चीज़ नहीं' — न यह, न वह, कोई नामनीय, इशारा-करने-योग्य, वर्णनीय, सोचने-योग्य। निर्गुण पकड़ने वाला मन fail — पकड़ना आकार माँगता, निर्गुण में आकार नहीं। कोशिश छोड़ने वाला सफल — छोड़ने में मन पारदर्शी, और पारदर्शी मन से जो चमकता वही हमेशा से: स्व-दीप्त, गुणातीत, अनादि, अनंत, अक्षर परम। इस श्रृंखला का हर नाम इस रुकने की ओर कदम। निर्गुण रुकना।
Modern Context · आज के संदर्भ में
माँ मर रही। Liver cancer। AIIMS Delhi। Room 4B। तीन हफ़्ते। शायद दो। बैंगलोर से उड़े — नौकरी, EMI, flat, ज़िंदगी उस शहर में जो उन्हें कभी पसंद नहीं — बिस्तर के पास रात 3 बजे, वे सोई, machines beep, corridor fluorescent हरी, antiseptic और अपने डर की गंध। पूरी ज़िंदगी धार्मिक — हर मंगलवार मंदिर, हर सुबह विष्णु सहस्रनाम, पूजा में छोटी पीतल मूर्ति जिससे बात करते जैसे कुछ therapist से। और आज रात Room 4B में, machines और गंध और तीन हफ़्ते, पता चलता कुछ काम नहीं। मूर्ति बैंगलोर में। सहस्रनाम शब्द। मंदिर इमारत। ईश्वर को दिया हर गुण — दया, सुंदरता, रक्षा, वे चार भुजाएँ जो थामने को — सब AIIMS की fluorescent छत से चाँद न दिखे ऐसी उँगली। और कल्पित ईश्वर और ज़रूरी ईश्वर के बीच — उस भयावह, ईमानदार, stripped-bare अंतराल में — कुछ बचा। मूर्ति नहीं। मंत्र नहीं। छवि नहीं। सबके नीचे — featureless, नामहीन, अदृश्य, पर मौजूद जैसे गुरुत्वाकर्षण: अदृश्य, सब थामे, रूप ज़रूरत नहीं। वर्णन नहीं कर सकते। पहले जैसे प्रार्थना नहीं। पर यहाँ है। Room 4B। रात 3। माँ का साँस लेता शरीर और तुम्हारा डरा हुआ एक ही गुणातीत आलिंगन में। यही निर्गुण — वह ईश्वर नहीं जिसकी पूजा ज़िंदगी सँभालने लायक़ हो, बल्कि वह ज़मीन जिस पर खड़े जब ईश्वर का हर वर्णन fail और बस वह उपस्थिति जिसका नाम नहीं।
Meditation · ध्यान
Remove everything. Eyes closed. Now remove the darkness — do not see darkness, see nothing. Remove the body — do not feel the chair, do not feel the breath, do not feel weight. Remove thought — not by stopping thoughts but by not following them, letting them pass like traffic you are not joining. Remove the 'I' that is trying to remove things — because even the remover is a quality. What remains? If the answer is 'nothing' — look at the nothing. Who is seeing it? That seer — the one remaining after every subtraction — is Nirguna. Stay in the subtraction for 7 minutes. It will feel like dissolution. It is. The dissolution of every quality reveals what needs no quality to exist.
Mantra Practice · मंत्र जप
Chant 'Neti neti' 108 times — not the full name mantra but the two-word negation that is the sound of Nirguna. Use no mala — even the mala is a quality to be removed. Hands empty, open, palms up. Voice increasingly soft, each repetition quieter than the last, until the final 'neti' is silent — a mouth moving with no sound, the negation negating itself. Best performed in the most stripped-bare moment you can find: 3 AM, alone, no light, no sound, no prop.
