Matsya Avatar -- The Fish Who Saved the World from the Flood
pralayapayasi dhātuḥ suptaśaktermukhebhyaḥ śrutigaṇamapanītaṃ pratyupādatta hatvā | ditijamakathayad yo brahma satyavratānāṃ tamahamakhilahetuṃ jihmamīnaṃ nato'smi ||
— Srimad Bhagavata Purana 8.24.61

| Source | Who the fish is | Distinctive detail |
|---|---|---|
| Shatapatha Brahmana | Not named as a god | Manu raises the fish; the ship comes to rest on a northern mountain; Manu then repopulates the world through a sacrifice |

| Bhagavata Purana (8.24) | Vishnu | King Satyavrata of Dravida; the teaching given in the boat; the rescue of the Vedas from Hayagriva |

— Srimad Bhagavata Purana 8.24.9

Dashavatara -- Why Vishnu Comes Back Ten Times
Fish, tortoise, boar, half-lion, dwarf, axe-warrior, prince, cowherd, enlightened teacher, future horseman. The ten avatars of Vishnu are not random folklore. Read them in sequence and you get something startling -- a narrative that mirrors evolutionary biology, tracks the rise and fall of political systems, and argues that God does not sit above history but enters it, gets dirty, and does the work. The Dashavatara is Hinduism's answer to the question every civilisation asks: why does the world keep breaking, and who fixes it?

Hayagriva -- The Horse-Headed Deity of Knowledge
Hayagriva is the horse-headed form of Vishnu, the deity who rescued the Vedas when the asuras Madhu and Kaitabha stole them at the start of cosmic time. He is the presiding deity of all learning in the Srivaishnava tradition, revered equally in Madhva Vaishnavism, and worshipped at Parakala Mutt in Mysore, at Sholinghur, and at Chennakesava Melkote. Students preparing for exams invoke him across South India. This is the deity whose stone image Vedanta Desika carried through fourteenth-century Tamil country.

The 14 Manus -- Cosmic Reset Buttons of Hindu Time
Hindu cosmology does not have one Adam. It has fourteen. Each Manvantara -- a cosmic era of 306.72 million years -- is governed by a different Manu who repopulates the earth, establishes dharma, and oversees a fresh team of gods, sages, and an Indra. We are currently in the 7th Manvantara, ruled by Vaivasvata Manu, son of Surya. Seven Manus have served. Seven are yet to come. And Vishnu takes a new avatar for each.

Narayana -- Cosmic Vishnu Beyond Avatara
Before Krishna lifted Govardhan and Rama crossed the ocean, there was Narayana lying on the serpent Ananta in the milk ocean. The avatars come and go. Narayana remains. This is the theological Vishnu at the base of every Vaishnava tradition, from Ramanuja's Sri Vaishnavism to the Badrinath pilgrimage to the Ashtakshari mantra every devotee chants.

Varaha Avatar -- The Boar Who Lifted the Earth
When the earth sank to the bottom of the cosmic ocean, Vishnu came out of Brahma's nostril as a boar the size of a thumb, grew to the size of a mountain, and dived to bring her back on his tusks. The story of the third avatar, the demon Hiranyaksha, and why the boar is also the sacrifice itself.

Kalki Avatar -- The Avatar Who Is Still to Come
Nine of Vishnu's ten avatars belong to the past. The tenth rides at the end of the Kali Yuga, on a white horse with a sword in his hand, to end an age of greed and begin the cycle again. What the Puranas actually say about Kalki -- and what they do not.
