Durga Ashtakam

namo devyai mahādevyai śivāyai satataṃ namaḥ। namaḥ prakṛtyai bhadrāyai niyatāḥ praṇatāḥ sma tām॥1॥

हम सदा देवी को, महादेवी को, और शिवा (मंगलमयी) को नमस्कार करते हैं। हम प्रकृति स्वरूपा और कल्याणकारी देवी को प्रणाम करते हैं। अनुशासन के साथ हम उनके चरणों में झुकते हैं।

We bow always to the Goddess, to the Great Goddess, to the auspicious Śivā. We bow to primal Nature, to the beneficent one — steadfastly we surrender to Her. She who is both the source of existence and the giver of all that is good receives our eternal reverence.

raudrāyai namo nityāyai gauryai dhātryai namo namaḥ। jyotsnāyai cendurupiṇyai sukhāyai satataṃ namaḥ॥2॥

रौद्र रूपा, नित्य, गौरी और धात्री देवी को बार-बार नमस्कार है। ज्योत्स्ना स्वरूपा, चंद्र रूपिणी और सुख देने वाली देवी को सदा नमस्कार है। वे एक साथ शक्ति और कोमलता की प्रतीक हैं।

Salutations to the fierce Raudrā, to the eternal one, to the radiant Gaurī, and to the sustainer of all — salutations again and again. We bow perpetually to the moonlit luminous one, to She who takes the form of the moon, and to the bestower of happiness. She embodies both fierce power and gentle grace, showing that true strength holds both.

kalyāṇyai praṇatāṃ vṛddhyai siddhyai kurmo namo namaḥ। nairṛtyai bhūbhṛtāṃ lakṣmyai śarvāṇyai te namo namaḥ॥3॥

हम कल्याणकारी देवी को नमस्कार करते हैं जो झुकने वालों को वृद्धि और सिद्धि प्रदान करती हैं। नैर्ऋती, राजाओं की लक्ष्मी, और शर्वाणी को बार-बार प्रणाम है। वे सभी उचित कार्यों की पूर्ति करने वाली हैं।

We offer salutations to the auspicious Kalyāṇī, for the growth and accomplishment of those who bow before Her. We bow again and again to Nairṛtī, to the Lakṣmī of those who bear the earth, and to Śarvāṇī. She is the source of all progress and the fulfillment of all worthy endeavors.

durgāyai durgapārāyai sārāyai sarvakāriṇyai। khyātyai tathaiva kṛṣṇāyai dhūmrāyai satataṃ namaḥ॥4॥

दुर्गा, कठिनाइयों से पार कराने वाली, सारतत्त्व और सर्वकारिणी देवी को सदा नमस्कार है। ख्याति वाली, कृष्णा और धूम्रा देवी को भी प्रणाम है। वे सभी बाधाओं को पार कराने वाली परम शक्ति हैं।

Perpetual salutations to Durgā, to the one who takes us beyond all difficulties, to the essence of all things and the doer of all actions. We bow to the renowned one, to Kṛṣṇā the dark one, and to Dhūmrā of the smoky hue. She is the fundamental reality underlying all phenomena and the one power that carries devoted souls across every obstacle.

atisaumyātiraudrāyai natāstasyai namo namaḥ। namo jagatpratiṣṭhāyai devyai kṛtyai namo namaḥ॥5॥

जो परम सौम्य भी हैं और परम रौद्र भी, उन देवी को हम बार-बार प्रणाम करते हैं। जगत की आधार और स्वयं क्रिया स्वरूपा देवी को नमस्कार है। उनमें सभी विरोधाभास एक हो जाते हैं।

We who bow are surrendered to Her who is at once supremely gentle and supremely fierce — salutations again and again to Her. We bow to the Goddess who is the very foundation of the universe and who is action itself embodied. In Her, all paradoxes resolve — tenderness and terror, stillness and movement coexist in perfect divine unity.

yā devī sarvabhūteṣu śaktirūpeṇa saṃsthitā। namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaḥ॥6॥

जो देवी सभी प्राणियों में शक्ति के रूप में विराजमान हैं, उन्हें नमस्कार है, नमस्कार है, नमस्कार है, बार-बार नमस्कार है। यह श्लोक बताता है कि दैवीय ऊर्जा कहीं बाहर नहीं, बल्कि हर जीव के भीतर ही वास करती है।

To that Goddess who dwells in all beings in the form of Śakti — power and energy — salutations to Her, salutations to Her, salutations to Her, again and again. This verse recognizes the divine energy not as something external or distant but as the very life-force pulsing within every living creature. The repetition of salutations deepens the recognition that this power is omnipresent and inexhaustible.

śaraṇāgatadīnārtaparitrāṇaparāyaṇe। sarvasyārtihare devi nārāyaṇi namo'stu te॥7॥

हे नारायणी देवी, आप शरण में आए हुए, दीन-दुखी और पीड़ित लोगों की रक्षा में तत्पर हैं, आपको नमस्कार है। आप सभी के दुःख और पीड़ा को हरने वाली हैं। जो सच्चे मन से आपकी शरण लेता है, वह कभी अकेला नहीं रहता।

O Goddess Nārāyaṇī, You who are wholly devoted to the protection of those who take refuge in You, the humble and the distressed — salutations to You. You are the remover of the suffering of all beings without exception. No one who truly surrenders to Her is abandoned — She is the ultimate refuge for the broken and the frightened.

sarvamaṅgalamāṅgalye śive sarvārthasādhike। śaraṇye tryambake gauri nārāyaṇi namo'stu te॥8॥

हे नारायणी, आप सभी मंगलों में मंगलमयी हैं, सर्वार्थ को सिद्ध करने वाली, शरण देने वाली, त्रिनेत्रा गौरी हैं — आपको नमस्कार है। सभी शुभ, सभी सफल प्रयास और सभी सुरक्षित आश्रय अंततः आपकी कृपा से ही हैं।

O Nārāyaṇī, You are the auspiciousness within all auspicious things, the benevolent Śivā, the accomplisher of all purposes — salutations to You. O three-eyed Gaurī, You are the ultimate refuge — we bow to You. This verse acknowledges that all good fortune, all fruitful endeavors, and all safe shelters ultimately trace back to Her grace.

idaṃ stotraṃ paṭhitvā tu mahāstotraṃ paṭhennараḥ। so'pi mucyeta saṃsārānmukto bhavati sarvadā॥9॥

जो व्यक्ति इस स्तोत्र को पढ़कर महास्तोत्र का पाठ करता है, वह संसार के बंधनों से मुक्त होकर सदा स्वतंत्र हो जाता है। यह फलश्रुति बताती है कि सच्ची भक्ति से किया गया पाठ न केवल सांसारिक लाभ देता है, बल्कि आत्मा की परम मुक्ति भी प्रदान करता है।

The person who recites this hymn and then recites the great hymn (Devī Māhātmya) shall be liberated from the cycle of worldly existence and attain freedom always. This phalashruti — the verse of fruit — seals the ashtakam with a promise: sincere, sustained devotion through sacred recitation leads not just to material benefit but to the ultimate liberation of the soul.
