Govindashtakam

satyaṃ jñānamanantaṃ nityamanākāśaṃ paramākāśam | gahanaṃ gahanāgamāpayaṃ govindaṃ paramānandam ||1||

गोविन्द सत्य हैं, ज्ञान हैं, अनंत हैं — नित्य, आकाश से परे, और फिर भी स्वयं परम आकाश हैं। वे इतने गहन हैं कि वेद भी उनकी थाह नहीं पा सकते, फिर भी सारे शास्त्र उन्हीं की ओर ले जाते हैं। उन परमानंद स्वरूप गोविन्द का मैं ध्यान करता हूँ।

Govinda is the Absolute Truth, pure Knowledge, and the Infinite — eternal, beyond the sky, and yet the supreme expanse Himself. He is profoundly deep, unfathomable even to the Vedas, yet He is the very source to which all scriptures lead. I meditate upon that Govinda, the embodiment of supreme bliss.

mlecchairanācaritaṃ nikhilanigamavedyaṃ nijālīlayā | gopīnāṃ nayanopalārcitaṃ govindaṃ paramānandam ||2||

जो अपवित्र आचरण करने वालों द्वारा प्राप्त नहीं किए जा सकते, फिर भी अपनी लीला से समस्त वेदों के द्वारा जाने जाते हैं — वे गोविन्द गोपियों के नयन-कमलों द्वारा पूजित हैं। गोपियों का प्रेमपूर्ण दृष्टिपात ही उनकी पूजा है, क्योंकि उनका प्रेम सबसे शुद्ध भक्ति है। उन परमानंद गोविन्द का मैं गुणगान करता हूँ।

He who cannot be reached by the impure in conduct, yet is knowable through all the Vedic scriptures by His own divine playfulness — that Govinda is worshipped by the lotus-like eyes of the gopis. The gopis' very gaze becomes an act of sacred adoration, for their love is the purest form of devotion. I sing of that Govinda, the embodiment of supreme bliss.

gopālaṃ prabhum avyayaṃ nigamaśīrṣādhyāsitaṃ nitarām | gopīnām anurañjanaṃ guṇamayaṃ govindaṃ paramānandam ||3||

वे गोपाल हैं, अविनाशी प्रभु हैं, जो समस्त वेदों के शिखर — उपनिषदों — में विराजमान हैं। वे गोपियों को निरंतर आनंदित करने वाले और समस्त दिव्य गुणों से परिपूर्ण हैं। उन परमानंद गोविन्द की मैं वंदना करता हूँ।

He is Gopala, the tender of cows, the imperishable Lord who is enthroned at the very crown of the Vedas — the Upanishads themselves bow to Him. He is the one who brings perennial delight to the gopis, and is the very embodiment of all divine virtues. I celebrate that Govinda, the supreme bliss.

saṃsārasāgarottaraṇakāraṇaśakti haribhakti | sampādaya nāma vicāraya cātmānaṃ paramānandam ||4||

संसार के इस विशाल सागर को पार करने की शक्ति केवल हरि-भक्ति में है। इसलिए इस भक्ति को जीवन में उतारो, उनका नाम जपो, और अपने स्वयं के आत्मस्वरूप का विचार करो — जो परमानंद ही है। यह श्लोक हमें केवल प्रशंसा नहीं, बल्कि सक्रिय साधना की ओर बुलाता है।

The power to cross the vast ocean of worldly existence lies in devotion to Hari alone. Therefore, cultivate that devotion, chant His Name, and contemplate the Self — which is none other than supreme bliss. This verse calls us not merely to admire Govinda but to actively practice the path that leads to Him.

nandanadandanamanandamānandanamakhilāṇḍamaṇḍalam | sundaravadanāravindaṃ saccidānandaṃ govindam ||5||

वे नंद के पुत्र हैं, दुष्टों को दंड देने वाले हैं, स्वयं आनंद-स्वरूप हैं और समस्त ब्रह्माण्ड को आनंदित करने वाले हैं। उनका मुखारविंद परम सुंदर कमल के समान है और वे सच्चिदानंद स्वरूप हैं। उन गोविन्द को मेरा प्रणाम है।

He is the son of Nanda, the chastiser of the wicked, bliss incarnate, the bestower of joy upon the entire universe and all its realms. His countenance is a beautiful lotus, and He is none other than Sat-Chit-Ananda — pure Existence, Consciousness, and Bliss. I bow to that Govinda.

gopīnāṃ kucakuṅkumāṅkitaṃ kastūrītilakam lalāṭapaṭṭe | dadhimastu piṇḍakhaṇḍamakhilamīśānaṃ govindam ||6||

उनके माथे पर गोपियों के आलिंगन से लगे कुंकुम और कस्तूरी का तिलक शोभायमान है। वे जो दही और मक्खन के टुकड़े चुराकर आनंद से खाते हैं, वही समस्त जगत के ईश्वर हैं — उन गोविन्द की मैं स्तुति करता हूँ। ब्रह्माण्ड के स्वामी का मिट्टी के बर्तन से मक्खन चुराना ही कृष्ण की अनूठी माधुरी है।

His forehead is adorned with a musk-fragrant tilaka, marked by the saffron from the bosoms of the gopis in their loving embrace. He who joyfully steals and savors lumps of curd and butter — yet is the supreme Lord of all — I sing of that Govinda. The contrast of the cosmic Ruler delighting in stolen butter from a clay pot is the heart of Krishna's irresistible charm.

vijitaśramasaṅgalolupāṃ vibhratīṃ kucakalaśataraṅgām | madhuramuralinanadatānāṃ govindaṃ paramānandam ||7||

जिन्होंने गोपियों की थकान को जीत लिया और उन्हें अपनी संगत के लिए व्याकुल कर दिया, जिन्होंने उनके रूप को मंत्रमुग्ध किया — वही गोविन्द अपनी मधुर मुरली की तानों से सारे जगत को भर देते हैं। उनका संगीत केवल मनोरंजन नहीं करता, बल्कि जीवन की थकान से बोझिल प्रत्येक आत्मा को दिव्यता की ओर खींचता है। उन परमानंद गोविन्द की मैं आराधना करता हूँ।

He who conquered all weariness and made the gopis eager for His company, who enchanted their graceful forms — that same Govinda fills the entire world with the sweet, resonant notes of His melodious flute. The music He plays does not merely entertain; it draws every soul, weary from life's labors, irresistibly toward the divine. I adore that Govinda, the supreme bliss.

govindāṣṭakametadadhyāyati yo bhaktisaṃyutaḥ satatam | sa bhunakti bhogānvividhānbahūnprāpnoti mokṣapadam ||8||

जो कोई भी इस गोविन्दाष्टकम् का निरंतर भक्तिभाव से पाठ और अध्ययन करता है, वह विविध सांसारिक सुखों का भरपूर आनंद लेता है और अंततः मोक्षपद को प्राप्त करता है। यह फलश्रुति सुंदरता से यह प्रकट करती है कि सच्ची भक्ति में जीवन के आनंदों का त्याग नहीं, बल्कि उनका उत्थान होता है। भक्त संसार से भागता नहीं, बल्कि उसमें सुंदरता से विचरण करता हुआ अंत में गोविन्द के चरणों में पहुँचता है।

Whoever studies and recites this eightfold hymn to Govinda with continuous devotion will enjoy abundant and varied worldly pleasures and, ultimately, attain the supreme state of liberation. This phalaśruti (fruit-declaration) beautifully affirms that true devotion does not demand the renunciation of life's joys — it elevates them. The devotee does not flee the world but moves through it gracefully, finally arriving at the feet of Govinda in liberation.
