महामाया की अवधारणा उस समस्या को हल करती है जो अन्यथा एक ब्रह्माण्डीय पहेली है: यदि देवी शुद्ध, अनन्त चेतना हैं, तो सीमा, पीड़ा और वियोग का संसार क्यों है? महामाया उत्तर है: वह शक्ति जो अनन्त को ढकती है वही उसे प्रकट करती है। आवरण और अनावरण उनकी दो गतियाँ हैं।
