एकाक्षर बीजमन्त्रों से हजार नाम पाठों तक भारत की मन्त्र विज्ञान की विशाल परम्परा इस नाम से अपनी जड़ में पोषित है; साधक समझते हैं कि जिन मन्त्रों के साथ वे काम करते हैं वे बाध्य करने वाले सूत्र नहीं बल्कि मन्त्रसार की ओर इंगित करने वाली अभिव्यक्तियाँ हैं।
