निरायुधः

Without weapons, the divine in whom there is no āyudha (weapon, the instrument of force) in his most essential nature , the one who is the ultimate power and yet requires no weapon because his very being is the most complete possible protection

अस्त्रों के बिना, वह दिव्य जिनमें अपनी सबसे आवश्यक प्रकृति में कोई आयुध (हथियार, शक्ति का उपकरण) नहीं है , वह जो परम शक्ति है और फिर भी किसी हथियार की आवश्यकता नहीं क्योंकि उनका अपना अस्तित्व ही सबसे पूर्ण संभव सुरक्षा है

निरायुध (अस्त्रों के बिना) शिव के प्रसिद्ध हथियारों के साथ एक विरोधाभास बनाता है। शिव हथियार वहन करते हैं (शूलपाणि, पिनाकी) फिर भी निरायुध के रूप में वे हथियारबाजी से परे हैं। समाधान: हथियार उनकी ब्रह्माण्डीय शक्ति की दृश्यमान अभिव्यक्तियाँ हैं; उनकी आंतरिक शक्ति को किसी उपकरण की आवश्यकता नहीं। भारत की निहत्थे स्वामियों की परंपरा निरायुध में भाग लेती है।
