Yamuna Ashtakam

yamune jaya jayatu yamune jaya jayatu yamune jaya । kalikhalmaṣanāśini jaya jaya jaya yamune jaya ।।1।।

हे यमुने, तुम्हारी जय हो! जय हो, जय हो, हे यमुने, तुम्हारी जय हो! हे कलियुग के समस्त पापों और कल्मषों को नष्ट करने वाली माँ यमुने, तुम्हारी जय-जय-जय हो! यह मंगलाचरण श्लोक यमुना माँ को कलियुग की समस्त अशुद्धियों की विनाशिका के रूप में स्तुति करता है।

O Yamuna, glory to you! Glory, glory, O Yamuna, glory to you! O destroyer of the sins and impurities of the Kali age, glory, glory, glory to you, O Yamuna! This opening invocation exuberantly celebrates the sacred river as the supreme purifier of all darkness accumulated in this fallen age.

nandagopatanūjasya preyasi priyadarśane । kṛṣṇabhāvanayā nityaṃ bhāvayasva mano mama ।।2।।

हे नंदबाबा के पुत्र श्रीकृष्ण की प्रिया, हे सुंदर और सुखद दर्शन देने वाली यमुने! मेरे मन को सदैव कृष्ण-भावना से परिपूर्ण करो। यमुना जी, जो श्रीकृष्ण की सबसे घनिष्ठ सहचरी हैं, वे ही भक्त के हृदय में कृष्ण-प्रेम जगाने में सर्वाधिक समर्थ हैं।

O beloved of the son of Nanda the cowherd, O beautiful and pleasant one to behold! Please fill my mind eternally with devotion to Krishna. Yamuna, as the most intimate witness and beloved companion of Krishna's earthly play, is uniquely qualified to instill Krishna-consciousness in the devotee's heart.

tvadambhasāṃ sparśanena sparśanāttīrabhūmijaḥ । prāṇināṃ pāparāśīnāṃ kṣayo bhavati tatkṣaṇāt ।।3।।

तुम्हारे पवित्र जल के स्पर्श मात्र से, और यहाँ तक कि तुम्हारे तट की मिट्टी के स्पर्श से भी, सभी प्राणियों के पापों के ढेर उसी क्षण नष्ट हो जाते हैं। यह श्लोक यमुना जी को केवल एक नदी नहीं, बल्कि तत्काल मुक्ति देने वाली दिव्य शक्ति के रूप में स्थापित करता है।

By the mere touch of your sacred waters, and even by the touch of the dust born from your banks, the accumulated mountains of sin of all living beings are destroyed instantly. This verse establishes Yamuna not merely as a purifying river but as an instantly liberating force — her very shore possessing transformative power.

candrāvalīmukhyasakhī sarvalokamanoharā । śrīkṛṣṇabhāvanāsārā yamune tvāṃ namāmyaham ।।4।।

हे यमुने, तुम चंद्रावली प्रमुख सखियों की परम सहेली हो, सम्पूर्ण लोकों को मोहित करने वाली हो, और श्रीकृष्ण-भावना की परम सार हो — मैं तुम्हें प्रणाम करता हूँ। यह श्लोक यमुना जी को वृंदावन के दिव्य प्रेम-जगत के केंद्र में स्थापित करता है।

O Yamuna, you are the foremost companion of Chandravali and other chief gopis, you are enchanting to all the worlds, and you are the very essence of devotion to Sri Krishna — I bow to you. This verse reveals Yamuna's intimate participation in the sacred love-world of Vrindavan, placing her at the heart of the rasika tradition.

kṛṣṇāṅgarāgasaurabhyasurabhīkṛtavāriṇi । kṛṣṇakrīḍākarasparśapulakāñcitakūlini ।।5।।

हे यमुने, जिनके जल श्रीकृष्ण के शरीर पर लगे सुगंधित उबटन से महकते हैं, और जिनके तट श्रीकृष्ण की क्रीड़ा करती भुजाओं के स्पर्श से रोमांचित हो उठे हैं! यह भावपूर्ण श्लोक यमुना जी को श्रीकृष्ण की दिव्य लीलाओं में एक अंतरंग भागीदार के रूप में वर्णित करता है।

O Yamuna, whose very waters are made fragrant by the perfumed anointment of Krishna's body, and whose banks are adorned with the thrills of ecstasy from the touch of Krishna's playful hands! This rapturous verse describes Yamuna as an intimate participant in Krishna's divine leelas, her waters and banks themselves transformed by direct contact with the Divine.

gopīnāṃ patisaṃyogasādhvī snānavibhūṣite । śrīkṛṣṇacaraṇāmarśasukhite jaya yāmini ।।6।।

हे यमुने, जो गोपियों के अपने प्रियतम से मिलन की साध में किए गए पवित्र स्नान से सुशोभित हो, और श्रीकृष्ण के चरणों के स्पर्श से परमानंद में मग्न हो — तुम्हारी जय हो! दिव्य लीलाओं की साक्षी और लाभार्थी होकर, यमुना स्वयं वही आनंद अनुभव करती हैं जो वे भक्तों को प्रदान करती हैं।

Glory to you, O Yamuna, adorned by the virtuous bathing of the gopis seeking union with their beloved lord, and made blissful by the touch of Sri Krishna's sacred feet! As both witness and beneficiary of the most intimate divine encounters, Yamuna herself experiences the bliss she bestows upon devotees who approach her.

viśrāmasthalaṃ ekaṃ tvaṃ pāpināṃ pāpanāśini । vallabhasya priye nityaṃ prītidā bhava me sadā ।।7।।

हे पापनाशिनि, तुम ही पापियों के लिए एकमात्र विश्रामस्थल हो; हे वल्लभ (कृष्ण) की प्रिये, मुझे सदा प्रेम और आनंद प्रदान करती रहो! इस अत्यंत व्यक्तिगत श्लोक में स्वयं वल्लभाचार्य जी बोलते हैं — मानवीय दुर्बलता स्वीकार करते हुए अपनी समस्त आशा यमुना माँ की कृपा पर रखते हैं।

O destroyer of sins, you alone are the resting place for sinners; O beloved of Vallabha (Krishna), always be the bestower of love and joy to me forever! In this deeply personal verse, Vallabhacharya himself speaks — acknowledging human frailty and placing his entire hope in Yamuna's grace as Krishna's beloved. The word 'vallabhasya' carries a beautiful double meaning: both 'of Krishna' and a self-reference by the poet Vallabha.

yamunāṣṭakametaddhi yaḥ paṭhet śraddhayānvitaḥ । sa yāti paramāṃ bhaktiṃ kṛṣṇasya paramātmanaḥ ।।8।।

जो कोई इस यमुनाष्टकम् को श्रद्धा और भक्ति के साथ पाठ करेगा, वह निश्चय ही परमात्मा श्रीकृष्ण की परम भक्ति को प्राप्त करेगा। यह अंतिम फलश्रुति श्लोक यह घोषणा करता है कि इस स्तोत्र का फल केवल सांसारिक आशीर्वाद नहीं, बल्कि सर्वोच्च आध्यात्मिक उपलब्धि — शुद्ध परम भक्ति — है।

Whoever recites this Yamuna Ashtakam with faith and sincere devotion will surely attain the supreme bhakti — the highest love — of Krishna, the Paramatman (Supreme Soul). This concluding phalaśruti (proclamation of fruit) promises that the reward of this hymn is not merely material blessings but the most elevated spiritual attainment: pure, supreme devotion to the Divine itself.
