Aryabhata -- The Astronomer Who Said the Earth Turns
| Idea | What Aryabhata wrote |
|---|---|
| The rotating Earth | The Earth turns on its axis; the apparent daily motion of the stars is like the way stationary objects on the shore seem to move backwards to a person in a moving boat |
| Eclipses | A lunar eclipse is the Moon entering the Earth's shadow; a solar eclipse is the Moon covering the Sun -- not the demon Rahu swallowing them |
| Pi | Add 4 to 100, multiply by 8, add 62,000: that is the "approximate" circumference of a circle of diameter 20,000 -- giving 3.1416 |
| Sines | A table of sine differences (jya) at intervals of 3 3/4 degrees, the basis of Indian trigonometry |
| Arithmetic and algebra | Square and cube roots, sums of series, the area of triangles and circles, and a method (kuttaka) for solving indeterminate equations |
| The year | A sidereal year of about 365.2586 days, remarkably close to the modern value |

Jya -- How the Indian Sine Became the Global Sine
The word sine in every mathematics textbook on Earth is a mistranslated memory of the Sanskrit jya, meaning bowstring. Aryabhata built the first true sine table in 499 CE, Bhaskara and Brahmagupta refined it, and Madhava of Sangamagrama found the infinite series for sine three centuries before Newton. This is the story of how the archer's string became the world's most-used mathematical function.

The Kerala School of Mathematics: Madhava and the Roots of Calculus
In a small village near 14th-century Cochin, a Brahmin mathematician named Madhava computed pi to eleven decimal places using infinite series -- 250 years before Newton or Leibniz. Today the world calls it the Madhava-Gregory-Leibniz formula. This is the honest story of the Kerala School: the priority is established, the achievements stand on their own, and the conspiracy framing was never needed.

The Invention of Zero -- India's Gift That Made Modern Civilisation Possible
Without zero, there is no binary code, no computers, no GPS, no banking system, no physics equation that works. The number that represents nothing is the single most important invention in the history of mathematics -- and it came from India. Not as a sudden discovery but as a centuries-long evolution: from a philosophical concept of 'shunya' (void) in Sanskrit thought, to a placeholder dot in the Bakhshali manuscript, to Aryabhata's positional number system, to Brahmagupta's formal arithmetic rules for zero in 628 CE. From India it travelled through Arab scholars to Europe, replacing Roman numerals and igniting the Scientific Revolution. This is the story of how nothing changed everything.

Surya Siddhanta -- The Ancient Astronomy Text That Got the Year Right to 1.4 Seconds
Before Copernicus, before Galileo, before the telescope existed -- an Indian text calculated the tropical year as 365.2421756 days. The modern value is 365.2421904. The difference is 1.4 seconds per year. The Surya Siddhanta also described gravity, computed planetary diameters within 1% accuracy, and invented the sine function. It did all this in Sanskrit verse.

Vedanga Jyotisha -- The Oldest Indian Calendar Science and the Eye of the Veda
Before Aryabhata, before the Surya Siddhanta, before the elaborate planetary models of classical Indian astronomy, there was a small text of 36 verses (Rig Veda recension) or 44 verses (Yajur Veda recension) that laid the foundation for everything. The Vedanga Jyotisha, attributed to the sage Lagadha and dated to roughly 1400-1200 BCE, is the oldest surviving Indian text on astronomy and calendrical science. It is not a stargazer's manual. It is a ritual engineer's handbook -- designed to answer one critical question: when exactly should the Vedic sacrifices be performed? From that question emerged the entire Indian tradition of tracking the sun, moon, and stars.
