Ardhanarishwara Ashtakam

cāmpeyagaurārdhāśarīrakāyai karpūragaurārdhāśarīrakāya | dhamillakāyai ca jaṭādharāya namaḥ śivāyai ca namaḥ śivāya ||1||

मैं उनको प्रणाम करता हूँ जिनका बायाँ आधा भाग चम्पे के फूल की तरह सुनहरी आभा वाली देवी पार्वती का है, और दायाँ आधा भाग कर्पूर की तरह श्वेत भगवान शिव का है। उनके एक भाग में सुंदर धम्मिल्ल केश हैं और दूसरे भाग में जटाएँ सुशोभित हैं। शिवा (पार्वती) को और शिव को मेरा नमस्कार है।

I bow to the one whose left half shines like the golden champak flower — the radiant Parvati — and whose right half gleams white as camphor — the luminous Shiva. Her half bears braided hair adorned beautifully, while His half bears the wild, matted locks of a yogi. Salutations to Shiva in Her form, and salutations to Shiva in His form.

kastūrikākuṅkumacarcitāyai citārajaḥpuñjavicarcitāya | kṛtasmarāyai vikṛtasmarāya namaḥ śivāyai ca namaḥ śivāya ||2||

उनके स्त्री भाग पर कस्तूरी और कुंकुम से शृंगार किया गया है, जबकि पुरुष भाग पर श्मशान की भस्म लगी हुई है। एक भाग प्रेम और सृजन का उद्गम है, जबकि दूसरा भाग वैराग्य और मोक्ष का प्रतीक है। ऐसे अर्धनारीश्वर को मेरा प्रणाम है।

Salutations to the one whose feminine half is adorned with fragrant musk and saffron, and whose masculine half is smeared with the sacred ash of the cremation ground. Her half is the very source and nurturer of love and desire, while His half is the destroyer of that same desire through supreme detachment. In this one form, creation and liberation are eternally held together.

jhaṇatkvaṇatkaṅkaṇaśiñjitāyai ghuṇatghuṇatghuṇghurūnūpurāya | pādāravindadvayaśobhitāyai namaḥ śivāyai ca namaḥ śivāya ||3||

उनके स्त्री भाग में कंगनों की मधुर झनकार है और पुरुष भाग में घुंघरुओं की गहरी गूँज है। दोनों कमल-चरण मिलकर एक अद्भुत दिव्य सौंदर्य की सृष्टि करते हैं। इस संगीतमय रूप में सृष्टि की लय समाहित है — ऐसे अर्धनारीश्वर को नमस्कार है।

Salutations to the one whose feminine half is adorned with bangles that tinkle melodiously, and whose masculine half wears resonant anklet-bells that ring with a deep, powerful sound. Both lotus feet together radiate divine beauty and grace, filling the cosmos with sacred rhythm. I bow to this form that embodies the music of the universe in its very movement.

prītipriyāyai priyatattvabodāyai pramodamānāyai priyadarśanāya | nirmāyikāyai vimalasvarūpāya namaḥ śivāyai ca namaḥ śivāya ||4||

प्रेम और आनंद की मूर्ति देवी पार्वती के स्वरूप को और प्रेम के परम तत्त्व का ज्ञान देने वाले, निर्मल और मायारहित शिव के स्वरूप को मेरा प्रणाम है। एक ओर भाव और हर्ष है, दूसरी ओर शुद्ध चेतना और तत्त्वज्ञान है। ये दोनों मिलकर ही सच्चे प्रेम की परिभाषा देते हैं।

Salutations to the feminine aspect who is the very embodiment of love, ever blissful and radiating affection, and to the masculine aspect who is the knowledge of the supreme principle underlying all love. Her form overflows with joy and delight, while His form is the immaculate, illusion-free pure consciousness that underlies all existence. Together they reveal that divine love is not blind emotion but the union of joy and wisdom.

prapañcasṛṣṭyai ca prapañcarakṣāyai prapañcasaṃhṛtyai parāyaṇāya | prapañcavandyāyai prapañcanāthāya namaḥ śivāyai ca namaḥ śivāya ||5||

उनके स्त्री स्वरूप में सृष्टि की रचना और पालन की शक्ति है, और पुरुष स्वरूप में संहार और परम शरण की शक्ति है। वे स्वयं ही ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और महेश के कार्य को एक ही शरीर में धारण करते हैं। समस्त ब्रह्मांड जिनकी वंदना करता है, उन अर्धनारीश्वर को नमस्कार है।

Salutations to the one who, in Her feminine aspect, is the power of cosmic creation and preservation, and in His masculine aspect, is the power of dissolution and the supreme transcendent refuge. She is the world's mother, worshipped by the entire universe, while He is the Lord to whom all of creation ultimately returns. In this single form reside all three cosmic functions — creation, preservation, and dissolution.

phaṇīndrabhuṣāyai phaṇīndradhārāya ramāvataṃsāyai maheśvarāya | dhanussureñdrāyai dhanurdharāya namaḥ śivāyai ca namaḥ śivāya ||6||

सर्पराज से अलंकृत, लक्ष्मी के समान वैभवशालिनी देवी और सर्पराज को आभूषण की तरह धारण करने वाले महेश्वर को मेरा प्रणाम है। एक ही सर्प दोनों को अलंकृत करता है — यह दर्शाता है कि जो एक के लिए भय है, वही दूसरे के लिए सौंदर्य बन जाता है। पिनाक धनुषधारी शिव और भव्य देवी को नमस्कार है।

Salutations to the feminine aspect adorned with the serpent-king as her ornament, magnificent like Goddess Lakshmi Herself, and to the masculine Maheshvara who bears the serpent-king as his garland. Her form radiates royal abundance and divine grace, while His form bears the great bow Pinaka, the weapon of cosmic order. Together they adorn each other with the same sacred serpent, showing that what terrifies becomes beautiful in divine consciousness.

pradīptaratnojjvalakuṇḍalāyai sphuranmahāpannagabhūṣaṇāya | śivānvitāyai ca śivānvitāya namaḥ śivāyai ca namaḥ śivāya ||7||

दीप्तिमान रत्नखचित कुंडल धारण किए देवी और महान सर्प को आभूषण की तरह पहने शिव को मेरा प्रणाम है। वे शिवा हैं क्योंकि शिव के साथ हैं, और शिव हैं क्योंकि शिवा उनके साथ हैं। एक-दूसरे से उनकी पहचान अटूट है — जैसे प्रकाश और सूर्य।

Salutations to the feminine half adorned with brilliant, gem-studded earrings that blaze with radiant light, and to the masculine half whose ornament is a great, gleaming serpent coiled in splendor. She is the one who is eternally united with Shiva, and He is the one who is eternally united with Shakti — each defined by and completed through the other. Their union is not circumstantial but essential, as fundamental as light is to the sun.

ambhodharaśyāmalaloḥitāyai tapaḥprakāśojjvalitendave ca | nirantarāyai nikhileśvarāya namaḥ śivāyai ca namaḥ śivāya ||8||

मेघ के समान श्यामल और रक्तिम आभा वाली देवी को और तपःप्रकाश से दीप्त चंद्रमा के समान शिव को मेरा प्रणाम है। वे निरंतर सर्वव्यापी शक्ति हैं और ये समस्त विश्व के अधीश्वर हैं। जीवनदायिनी मेघश्यामला और शीतल चंद्रमा मिलकर समस्त सृष्टि का पोषण करते हैं।

Salutations to the feminine half whose complexion is like a rain-laden dark cloud with a beautiful reddish glow, full of life-giving promise, and to the masculine half who blazes like the moon illuminated by the light of supreme tapas and austerity. She is the unceasing, ever-present Shakti that pervades all of existence without interruption, while He is the Lord of the entire universe, the all-encompassing Maheshvara. In their unity, the cooling moon and the life-giving rain cloud together sustain all of creation.

idaṃ paṭhed aṣṭakamiṣṭadaṃ yo bhaktyā sa māṇyo bhuvi dīrghajīvī | prāpnoti saubhāgyamanantamante śivasya sāmrājyapadaṃ suśāntam ||9||

जो भक्त इस अष्टकम का श्रद्धापूर्वक पाठ करता है, वह इस संसार में सम्मानित और दीर्घायु होता है। उसे जीवन में अनंत सौभाग्य की प्राप्ति होती है और अंत में शिव के परम शांत, सर्वोच्च साम्राज्य पद की प्राप्ति होती है। यह अष्टकम मनोवांछित फल देने वाला और मोक्षदायक है।

Whoever recites this ashtakam with sincere devotion shall be honored and revered in this world and shall live a long and blessed life. In the course of life, they will attain boundless auspiciousness and prosperity, and ultimately they will reach the supreme, perfectly peaceful state of Shiva's own sovereign realm. This hymn grants all that is desired and leads the devoted soul to the final liberation of divine peace.
