Margabandhu Ashtakam

॥1॥ mārgabandhuṃ mahādevaṃ sarvalokaikarakṣakam| vande śambhuṃ jagannāthaṃ pathikānāṃ priyaṃ sadā||

मैं मार्गबन्धु महादेव को प्रणाम करता हूँ, जो समस्त लोकों के एकमात्र रक्षक हैं, जिन्हें शम्भु और जगन्नाथ के नाम से जाना जाता है और जो यात्रियों के सदा प्रिय हैं। वे हर पथिक के शाश्वत साथी हैं, जीवन की हर राह पर आश्रय और दिशा देने वाले हैं। यह प्रणाम भक्त के लिए उनकी दिव्य छत्रछाया में आगे बढ़ने का द्वार खोले।

I bow to Margabandhu, the Great God, the sole protector of all the worlds, who is known as Shambhu and Jagannatha, ever dear to all travelers on the path. He is the eternal companion of every soul journeying through existence, offering shelter and guidance at every crossroads. May this salutation open the way for the devotee to walk safely under His divine protection.

॥2॥ kaṇṭakākīrṇamārgeṣu durgameṣu bhayāvaheṣu| pādapadmena pāhi tvaṃ mārgabandho namo'stu te||

काँटों से भरे मार्गों पर, दुर्गम और भयावह रास्तों पर, हे मार्गबन्धो, अपने चरण-कमलों से मेरी रक्षा करें। भक्त स्वीकार करता है कि जीवन की यात्रा हमेशा सुगम नहीं होती, और ऐसे संकट एवं अनिश्चितता के क्षणों में केवल प्रभु की कृपा ही मार्ग प्रशस्त कर सकती है। आपको नमस्कार है, जो हर दुर्गम पथ को पवित्र तीर्थयात्रा में बदल देते हैं।

On paths strewn with thorns, on roads that are difficult to traverse and filled with fear, protect me, O Margabandhu, with your lotus feet. The devotee acknowledges that life's journey is not always smooth, and in those moments of peril and uncertainty, only the Lord's grace can clear the way. Salutations to You, the divine companion who transforms every treacherous path into a sacred pilgrimage.

॥3॥ triśūlapāṇiṃ gaṃgādharaṃ jñānadīpakaraṃ prabhum| andhakāramahāmārge jyotirdānaṃ namāmyaham||

मैं उस प्रभु को नमस्कार करता हूँ जो त्रिशूल धारण करते हैं, अपनी जटाओं में पवित्र गंगा को धारण करते हैं, और सच्चे ज्ञान का दीपक थामे हुए हैं — जो अंधकार के महामार्ग पर दिव्य प्रकाश प्रदान करते हैं। जब जीवन का पथ अज्ञान और भ्रम में डूब जाता है, तब शिव शाश्वत ज्योति के रूप में खड़े होकर हर छाया को प्रकाशित करते हैं। उनकी उपस्थिति मात्र आध्यात्मिक अंधेपन के अंधकार को मिटा देती है और सबसे अस्पष्ट मार्ग को भी उज्ज्वल कर देती है।

I bow to the Lord who wields the trident, bears the sacred Ganga on His matted locks, and holds aloft the lamp of true knowledge — He who bestows divine light upon the great path of darkness. When the road of life plunges into ignorance and confusion, Shiva stands as the eternal flame that illumines every shadow. His very presence dissolves the darkness of spiritual blindness, making even the most obscure path radiant and clear.

॥4॥ saṃsāramārge bhrāntānāṃ mohapāśanibaddhināṃ| muktimārgapradarśāya mārgabandho namo'stu te||

हे मार्गबन्धो, आपको नमस्कार है, जो संसार के पथ पर भटकते हुए और मोह के पाश में जकड़े हुए लोगों को मुक्ति का मार्ग दिखाते हैं। संसार का चक्र अनेक आत्माओं को इच्छा और आसक्ति के जाल में फँसाए रखता है, और केवल शिव की कृपा ही उन बंधन की रस्सियों को काट सकती है। यह श्लोक दिव्य हस्तक्षेप के लिए हृदय से की गई प्रार्थना है — प्रभु से निवेदन कि भ्रम से बाहर निकालकर परम स्वतंत्रता की ओर ले चलें।

Salutations to You, O Margabandhu, who reveals the path of liberation to those wandering lost on the road of worldly existence, bound fast by the noose of delusion. The cycle of samsara traps countless souls in its web of desire and attachment, and only the grace of Shiva can cut through those binding ropes. This verse is a heartfelt prayer for divine intervention — a plea to the Lord to show the way out of confusion and toward ultimate freedom.

॥5॥ candraśekhara rudrāya nīlakaṇṭhāya śūline| pathyekapālakāyāstu namastubhyaṃ pinākinе||

हे चन्द्रशेखर रुद्र, नीलकण्ठ, त्रिशूलधारी, पथ के एकमात्र रक्षक, पिनाक धनुष के धारक — आपको नमस्कार है। शिव के यहाँ उल्लिखित प्रत्येक दिव्य नाम और गुण उनकी उस ब्रह्मांडीय शक्ति के एक आयाम का प्रतिनिधित्व करते हैं जो यात्री की रक्षा करती है — रात के मार्ग को प्रकाशित करने वाला चन्द्रमा, विश्व को बचाने के लिए विष पीने वाला नीला कण्ठ, और सभी बाधाओं को नष्ट करने वाला त्रिशूल। इन सभी पहलुओं को एक साथ पुकारने से भक्त शिव की रक्षात्मक कृपा के पूर्ण स्पेक्ट्रम का आह्वान करता है।

Salutations to You, O moon-crested Rudra, the blue-throated one, the trident-bearer, the sole guardian of the path, the wielder of the Pinaka bow. Each of Shiva's divine names and attributes mentioned here represents a dimension of His cosmic power that protects the traveler — the moon that lights the night road, the blue throat that absorbed poison to save the world, and the trident that destroys all obstacles. In calling upon all these aspects together, the devotee invokes the full spectrum of Shiva's protective grace.

॥6॥ parvate vā jale vāpi vane vā durgame pathi| sarvatra rakṣakastvaṃ hi mārgabandho maheśvara||

पर्वत पर हो, जल में हो, वन में हो या दुर्गम मार्ग पर — हे मार्गबन्धो, हे महेश्वर, सर्वत्र आप ही रक्षक हैं। यह श्लोक शिव की अभिरक्षा की सर्वव्यापकता की घोषणा करता है, किसी भी भूभाग या परिस्थिति को उनके दिव्य आश्रय की पहुँच से बाहर नहीं रखता। चाहे यात्रा महत्वाकांक्षा की ऊँचाइयों पर जाए, भावनाओं की गहराइयों में, अज्ञात के जंगल में, या सबसे कठिन रास्तों पर — प्रभु सदा विश्वासयोग्य मित्र के रूप में साथ चलते हैं।

Whether on the mountain, in the waters, in the forest, or on the most impassable road — everywhere You are indeed the protector, O Margabandhu, O Great Lord. This verse declares the omnipresence of Shiva's guardianship, leaving no terrain or circumstance outside the reach of His divine shelter. No matter where the journey leads — into the heights of ambition, the depths of emotion, the wilderness of the unknown, or the hardest of roads — the Lord walks alongside as the ever-faithful friend.

॥7॥ bhavasāgaraghṃagnānāṃ dīnānāṃ śaraṇārthinām| hastaṃ gṛhītvā netāsi mārgabandho kṛpānidhе||

हे मार्गबन्धो, हे कृपानिधे, जो भवसागर में डूब रहे हैं, जो दीन और पीड़ित हैं, जो आपकी शरण चाहते हैं — उनका हाथ थामकर आप उन्हें आगे ले चलते हैं। यह श्लोक शिव को एक मार्गदर्शक के रूप में सबसे अंतरंग और कोमल रूप में प्रस्तुत करता है: दूर से आज्ञाएँ देने वाले देवता नहीं, बल्कि एक प्रेमपूर्ण उपस्थिति जो संघर्षरत भक्त को सुरक्षित स्थान पर खींचने के लिए सचमुच अपना हाथ बढ़ाती है। संसार की बाढ़ में भगवान के हाथ थामे चलने की यह छवि समस्त भक्ति परम्परा में सबसे सांत्वनादायक है।

O Margabandhu, O treasure-house of compassion, You take the hand of those drowning in the ocean of worldly existence — the humble and distressed souls who seek Your refuge — and lead them forward. This verse presents the most intimate and tender aspect of Shiva as a guide: not a distant deity issuing commands, but a loving presence who literally extends His hand to pull the struggling devotee to safety. The image of God holding one's hand through the flood of samsara is one of the most comforting in all of devotional tradition.

॥8॥ mārgabandhummamum devam yaḥ paṭhedaṣṭakaṃ śubham| sa yāti paramaṃ mārgaṃ śivasāyujyamuttamam|| ||iti mārgabandhu aṣṭakam sampūrṇam||

जो कोई भी मार्गबन्धु देव की इस शुभ अष्टक का पाठ करता है, वह परम मार्ग को प्राप्त होगा और शिव के साथ सर्वोच्च सायुज्य को प्राप्त करेगा। यह अंतिम फलश्रुति श्लोक भक्तिपूर्ण पाठ का अंतिम पुरस्कार घोषित करता है: केवल सांसारिक सुरक्षा और मार्गदर्शन नहीं, बल्कि सभी आध्यात्मिक यात्राओं का परम गंतव्य — स्वयं शिव में सायुज्य की सर्वोच्च अवस्था में विलीन होना। इस प्रकार सम्पूर्ण अष्टकम् एक पूर्ण आध्यात्मिक यात्रा का निर्माण करता है, सुरक्षा माँगने के प्रथम चरण से लेकर दिव्य मिलन में अंतिम आगमन तक।

Whoever recites this auspicious eightfold hymn to Margabandhu, the divine Lord, shall attain the supreme path and the highest union with Shiva. This concluding phalaśruti verse declares the ultimate reward of devoted recitation: not merely earthly protection and guidance, but the transcendent destination of all spiritual journeys — merging with Shiva Himself in the supreme state of sāyujya. The entire ashtakam thus forms a complete spiritual journey, from the first step of seeking protection to the final arrival at divine union.
