Mrityunjaya Ashtakam

oṃ tryambakaṃ yajāmahe sugandhinṃ puṣṭivardhanam । urvārukam iva bandhanān mṛtyormukṣīya mā'mṛtāt ।।1।।

हम त्रिनेत्रधारी भगवान शिव की पूजा करते हैं, जो दिव्य सुगंध से युक्त हैं और समस्त प्राणियों का पोषण करते हैं। जिस प्रकार पका हुआ खीरा अपनी लता से सहज ही अलग हो जाता है, उसी प्रकार वे हमें मृत्यु के बंधन से मुक्त करें। किंतु अमृतत्व के आनंद से हमें कभी वंचित न करें।

We worship the three-eyed Lord Shiva, who is fragrant with divine grace and who nourishes and sustains all beings. Just as a ripe cucumber is effortlessly released from its vine, may He liberate us from the bondage of death. Yet let Him never separate us from the nectar of immortality that is His own divine nature.

mṛtyuñjayāya rudrāya nīlakaṇṭhāya śambhave । amṛteśāya śarvāya mahādevāya te namaḥ ।।2।।

हे मृत्युञ्जय, हे रुद्र, हे नीलकंठ जिन्होंने समस्त जगत की रक्षा के लिए विष पान किया — आपको नमस्कार है। हे शम्भु, हे अमृतेश, हे शर्व, हे महादेव — आपके इन सभी दिव्य स्वरूपों को मेरा प्रणाम। आपकी अनेक दिव्य शक्तियों का स्मरण करते हुए मैं आपको सादर नमन करता हूँ।

Salutations to You, O Mrityunjaya, the conqueror of death, the fierce Rudra, and the blue-throated one who swallowed the cosmic poison for the good of all. Salutations to Shambhu the bestower of bliss, to Amriteshaya the lord of immortality, and to Sharva the destroyer of all evil. To You, the great God Mahadeva, I bow with complete devotion.

kālakālāya bhīmāya paraśuhastāya mīḍhuṣe । giriśāya maheśāya mṛtyuñjaya namo'stu te ।।3।।

हे मृत्युञ्जय, आप काल के भी काल हैं, आप भीमरूप हैं और आपके हाथ में वह परशु है जो अज्ञान के बंधनों को काट देता है। आप उदारतापूर्वक वरदान देने वाले, पर्वतों के स्वामी और परम महेश्वर हैं। आपके चरणों में मेरा बारम्बार नमस्कार अर्पित है।

Salutations to You, O Mrityunjaya — You who are the death of death itself, the awesome and formidable one who wields the axe that severs the bonds of illusion. You are the generous bestower of boons, the lord of the sacred mountains, and the supreme Maheshvara. Let my obeisance be eternally offered at Your feet, O great God.

viśveśvarāya sarvāya śaśiśekharabūṣite । pinākahastadevāya mṛtyuñjaya namo'stu te ।।4।।

हे मृत्युञ्जय, आप विश्वेश्वर हैं — सम्पूर्ण ब्रह्मांड के स्वामी, जो सर्वव्यापी हैं और अपने मस्तक पर चंद्रकला को धारण किये हैं जो कालचक्र और दिव्य प्रकाश का प्रतीक है। आपके हाथ में पिनाक धनुष है जो अधर्म का नाश करता है। हे देवेश, मेरा यह नमस्कार आपके चरणों में समर्पित है।

Salutations to You, O Mrityunjaya — the lord of the entire universe, the all-pervading one adorned with the crescent moon as His crown, whose serene beauty contains within it the cycles of time and cosmic illumination. You hold the mighty bow Pinaka in Your hand, ready to destroy all that threatens righteousness and peace. O divine Lord, let this humble salutation reach You across all the worlds You encompass.

jaṭājūṭadharāya ca gaṅgādharavibhūṣite । bhasmoddhūlitasarvāṅga mṛtyuñjaya namo'stu te ।।5।।

हे मृत्युञ्जय, आपकी जटाओं में पवित्र गंगा विराजमान है और आपका सम्पूर्ण शरीर भस्म से विभूषित है जो जीवन की नश्वरता की सत्य घोषणा करता है। गंगा सभी पापों और दुःखों को धो देती है, और भस्म यह स्मरण दिलाती है कि एक दिन सब कुछ इसी में विलीन हो जाएगा। हे मृत्युञ्जय, आपके इस अद्भुत रूप को मेरा प्रणाम।

Salutations to You, O Mrityunjaya — You who bear the cascade of matted locks adorned with the sacred river Ganga flowing through them, whose entire body is beautifully smeared with holy ash that declares the ultimate truth of impermanence. The Ganga in Your locks purifies all who remember it, and the ash upon Your body whispers that all which is born shall return to its source. O Mrityunjaya, receive my humble bow.

karuṇākara deveśa bhaktānugrahakāraka । saṃsārasāgare magnaṃ uddharasva dayānidhe ।।6।।

हे करुणाकर देवेश, हे भक्तों पर अनुग्रह करने वाले — मैं इस संसार-सागर में डूबा जा रहा हूँ जहाँ जन्म-मृत्यु, आसक्ति और कष्टों की अनंत लहरें हैं। हे दयानिधि, कृपया मुझे इस सागर से निकालिए और मोक्ष के किनारे तक पहुँचाइए। आपकी कृपा ही वह रस्सी है जो मुझे डूबने से बचा सकती है।

O compassionate Lord, O Deveshvara who bestows grace upon Your devoted ones — I am submerged and drowning in the vast ocean of worldly existence with its endless cycles of birth, suffering, attachment, and death. Please lift me up from these turbulent waters, O treasure-house of mercy and compassion. Your grace alone is the rope that can pull me safely to the shore of liberation.

tryambakaṃ yajamānasya mṛtyupāśavināśana । mokṣamārgapradātāraṃ mṛtyuñjaya namo'stu te ।।7।।

हे मृत्युञ्जय, हे त्र्यम्बक — आप अपने भक्तों के मृत्युपाश को नष्ट करने वाले हैं जो आपकी शरण लेते हैं। आप ही मोक्षमार्ग के प्रदाता हैं — वह दिव्य ज्ञान जो अज्ञान को काटकर आत्मा को जन्म-मृत्यु के चक्र से मुक्त करता है। हे मृत्युञ्जय, इस भक्त का नमस्कार स्वीकार करें।

Salutations to You, O Mrityunjaya, the three-eyed one who destroys the noose of death that binds all worshippers who take refuge in Your lotus feet. You are the supreme bestower of the path of moksha — the liberating knowledge that cuts through ignorance and frees the soul from the endless cycle of death and rebirth. O conqueror of death, accept this devotee's humble prostration.

idaṃ stotraṃ paṭhedyastu mṛtyuñjayasya sannidhau । mṛtyuṃ jayati so'nityaṃ labhate mokṣamavyayam ।।8।।

जो भी भक्त मृत्युञ्जय की उपस्थिति में, श्रद्धा और समर्पण से इस पवित्र स्तोत्र का पाठ करता है, वह मृत्यु और नश्वरता को जीत लेता है। ऐसा भक्त अविनाशी और शाश्वत मोक्ष को प्राप्त होता है जो मानव जीवन का परम लक्ष्य है और शिव की कृपा का सर्वोच्च उपहार है। यह मृत्युञ्जय का दिव्य वचन है।

Whoever recites this sacred hymn in the presence of Mrityunjaya, with a devoted and surrendered heart, shall conquer death and all the impermanence that brings sorrow and fear to human life. Such a devotee shall attain the imperishable and eternal liberation — moksha — which is the ultimate goal of human existence and the supreme gift of Shiva's grace. This is the divine promise sealed by the conqueror of death Himself.
