Rudrashtakam

namāmīśam īśāna nirvāṇarūpaṃ vibhuṃ vyāpakaṃ brahmavedasvarūpam | nijaṃ nirguṇaṃ nirvikalpaṃ nirīhaṃ cidākāśam ākāśavāsaṃ bhaje'ham ||1||

मैं ईशान भगवान को प्रणाम करता हूँ, जिनका स्वरूप ही निर्वाण (मुक्ति) है — जो विभु, व्यापक, ब्रह्म और वेदों के स्वरूप हैं। जो निज-स्वरूप, निर्गुण, निर्विकल्प और निरीह हैं; जो चिदाकाश (चेतना रूपी आकाश) और आकाश में वास करने वाले हैं — उन्हें मैं भजता हूँ।

I bow to Lord Ishana, whose very form is liberation — the omnipresent, all-pervading one, the essence of Brahman and the Vedas. Beyond attributes, undivided and desireless, He is pure consciousness, vast as space and dwelling in space. Him I worship.

nirākāram oṅkāramūlaṃ turīyaṃ girā jñāna gotītam īśaṃ girīśam | karālaṃ mahākālakālaṃ kṛpālaṃ guṇāgārasaṃsārapāraṃ nato'ham ||2||

मैं उन्हें प्रणाम करता हूँ जो निराकार हैं, ॐकार के मूल हैं, तुरीय (चौथी अवस्था) हैं; जो वाणी, ज्ञान और इन्द्रियों से परे हैं; जो गिरीश (कैलाश के स्वामी) हैं; जो कराल (भयंकर) होते हुए भी कृपालु हैं — जो महाकाल के भी काल हैं, समस्त गुणों के आगार और संसार-सागर से परे हैं।

I bow to the formless one, the root of Om, the fourth state (turiya) beyond all speech, knowledge and the senses; the Lord of Kailasa; terrible in majesty yet ever compassionate — the death of even Death itself, the abode of all virtue, who dwells beyond the ocean of worldly existence.

tuṣārādrisaṃkāśagauraṃ gabhīraṃ manobhūtakoṭiprabhāśrīśarīram | sphuranmaulikallolinīcārugaṅgā lasadbhālabālendukaṇṭhe bhujaṅgā ||3||

जो हिमालय के समान गौर वर्ण और गंभीर हैं, जिनका तेजस्वी शरीर करोड़ों कामदेवों की कान्ति से दीप्त है; जिनके चमकते मस्तक पर लहराती सुंदर गंगा सुशोभित है, जिनके भाल पर बालचंद्र और कण्ठ में सर्प विराजमान हैं।

White as the snow-clad mountain and profound, His resplendent body glows with the radiance of countless gods of love. On His shimmering head the lovely, wave-tossing Ganga flows; on His brow shines the crescent moon; and around His neck coil the serpents.

calatkuṇḍalaṃ bhrūsunetraṃ viśālaṃ prasannānanaṃ nīlakaṇṭhaṃ dayālam | mṛgādhīśacarmāmbaraṃ muṇḍamālaṃ priyaṃ śaṅkaraṃ sarvanāthaṃ bhajāmi ||4||

हिलते कुण्डलों, सुंदर भ्रू और विशाल नेत्रों वाले, प्रसन्न मुख, नीलकण्ठ और दयालु; जो सिंह-चर्म धारण करते और मुण्डमाला पहनते हैं — उन प्रिय शंकर, सर्वनाथ को मैं भजता हूँ।

With swaying earrings, beautiful brows and wide, lovely eyes, a serene and gracious face, the blue throat, and boundless compassion; clad in the lion’s skin, wearing a garland of skulls — the beloved Shankara, Lord of all, I worship.

pracaṇḍaṃ prakṛṣṭaṃ pragalbhaṃ pareśam akhaṇḍam ajaṃ bhānukoṭiprakāśam | trayaḥśūlanirmūlanaṃ śūlapāṇiṃ bhaje'haṃ bhavānīpatiṃ bhāvagamyam ||5||

जो प्रचण्ड, श्रेष्ठ, प्रगल्भ और परमेश्वर हैं; अखण्ड, अजन्मा और करोड़ों सूर्यों के समान प्रकाशमान हैं; जो तीनों तापों (सुखों-दुखों) का निर्मूलन करने वाले और त्रिशूलधारी हैं — उन भावगम्य भवानीपति को मैं भजता हूँ।

Fierce, exalted and bold, the supreme Lord — undivided, unborn, blazing like a million suns; the uprooter of the three sufferings, holding the trident. I worship the consort of Bhavani, who is reached not by ritual but through pure devotion.

kalātītakalyāṇa kalpāntakārī sadā sajjanānandadātā purārī | cidānandasandoha mohāpahārī prasīda prasīda prabho manmathārī ||6||

जो काल से परे, कल्याण-स्वरूप और कल्प के अंत में संहार करने वाले हैं; जो सदा सज्जनों को आनंद देने वाले और पुरारी (त्रिपुर के नाशक) हैं; जो चिदानन्द के पुंज और मोह को हरने वाले हैं — हे प्रभु, हे मन्मथारी, प्रसन्न होइए, प्रसन्न होइए।

Beyond time, the ever-auspicious one, who dissolves the worlds at the end of the aeon; forever the giver of joy to the good, the destroyer of Tripura; the very mass of consciousness and bliss, the remover of delusion — be gracious, be gracious, O Lord, conqueror of desire.

na yāvad umānāthapādāravindaṃ bhajantīha loke pare vā narāṇām | na tāvatsukhaṃ śānti santāpanāśaṃ prasīda prabho sarvabhūtādhivāsam ||7||

जब तक मनुष्य इस लोक या परलोक में उमापति (शिव) के चरण-कमलों की भक्ति नहीं करते, तब तक न सुख है, न शांति, न संताप का नाश। हे प्रभु, हे समस्त प्राणियों में निवास करने वाले, प्रसन्न होइए।

As long as people do not worship the lotus feet of Uma’s Lord — in this world or the next — there is no happiness, no peace, no end to sorrow. Be gracious, O Lord, who dwell within all beings.

na jānāmi yogaṃ japaṃ naiva pūjāṃ nato'haṃ sadā sarvadā śambhu tubhyam | jarājanmaduḥkhaugha tātapyamānaṃ prabho pāhi āpannamām īśa śambho ||8||

मैं न योग जानता हूँ, न जप, न ही पूजा; हे शम्भु, मैं तो सदा-सर्वदा केवल आपको प्रणाम करता हूँ। जरा और जन्म के दुखों के प्रवाह से संतप्त इस दीन की, हे प्रभु, रक्षा कीजिए — हे ईश, हे शम्भो, इस शरणागत को बचाइए।

I know neither yoga, nor chanting, nor the rites of worship; I only bow to You, O Shambhu, always and forever. Tormented by the ceaseless flood of the sorrows of birth and old age, protect me, O Lord — save this fallen one, O Ishana, O Shambho.
