महारात्री - ब्रह्मा की वह महाकालिक रात्रि जो पूर्ण कल्प के अन्त में आती है, जब सम्पूर्ण ब्रह्माण्ड नई सृष्टि प्रकट होने से पहले देवी के भीतर सोता है

महाशिवरात्रि, जो करोड़ों भारतीयों द्वारा जागरण, उपवास और तीव्र भक्ति की रात के रूप में मनाई जाती है, महारात्री से वार्षिक मुलाकात है। रात के सबसे अन्धेरे पहर में जागना, विक्षेपों की अनुपस्थिति में जो उभरे उसका सामना करना - इसका एक आन्तरिक आयाम है जिसे आधुनिक मनोविज्ञान पहचानने लगा है: आत्मा की अन्धेरी रात खराबी नहीं, दीक्षा है।
