Shiva Ashtakam

prabhuṃ prāṇanāthaṃ vibhuṃ viśvanāthaṃ jagannātha nāthaṃ sadānanda bhājam | bhavadbhavya bhūteśvaraṃ bhūtanāthaṃ śivaṃ śaṅkaraṃ śambhumīśānamīḍe ||1||

मैं उन प्रभु की स्तुति करता हूँ जो प्राणों के स्वामी हैं, सर्वव्यापी हैं, विश्व के नाथ हैं और समस्त जगत के परम ईश्वर हैं। वे सदा आनंद प्रदान करने वाले, समस्त प्राणियों के स्वामी और पंचभूतों के ईश्वर हैं। वे शिव हैं, शंकर हैं, शम्भु हैं — मंगलमय, सुखदाता और परम ईशान हैं।

I praise and worship the Lord who is the master of life, all-pervading, lord of the universe, and the supreme ruler of all creation. He is the ever-blissful one who bestows joy, the lord of all beings and all elements. He is Shiva, Shankara, Shambhu — the auspicious, the joy-giver, and the supreme Ishana.

gale'valambya lambitāṃ bhujaṅgatuṅgamālikām | ḍamaḍḍamaḍḍamaḍḍamannināda vaḍḍamarvayaṃ cakāra caṇḍatāṇḍavaṃ tanotu naḥ śivaḥ śivam ||2||

भगवान शिव जिनके गले में ऊँची सर्पमाला लटकती है और जिन्होंने डमरू की डमड्डमड् ध्वनि के साथ प्रचंड तांडव नृत्य किया — वे शिव हमें मंगल प्रदान करें। डमरू की ध्वनि सृष्टि की आदि कंपन है जो समस्त ब्रह्मांड में व्याप्त है। उनका तांडव केवल विनाश नहीं बल्कि सृष्टि का नित्य स्पंदन है।

Shiva, who wears a lofty garland of serpents hanging around his neck, and who performed the fierce Tandava dance to the resounding beat of his Damaru drum — may that Shiva grant us all auspiciousness. The thunderous ḍamaḍḍamaḍ sound of the Damaru fills the cosmos with the primal vibration of creation. His fierce dance is not destruction alone but the rhythmic pulse that sustains the universe.

jaṭāṭavīgalajjalapravāhapāvitasthale gale'valambya lambitāṃ bhujaṅgatuṅgamālikām | ḍamaḍḍamaḍḍamaḍḍamannināda vaḍḍamarvayaṃ cakāra caṇḍatāṇḍavaṃ tanotu naḥ śivaḥ śivam ||3||

शिव की जटारूपी वन से गंगा का जल प्रवाहित होकर सभी स्थानों को पावन करता है; उनके गले में विशाल सर्पमाला लटकती है। डमरू की प्रचंड ध्वनि के साथ उन्होंने उग्र तांडव नृत्य किया — वे शिव हमें सर्वमंगल प्रदान करें। जटाओं से बहता जल दिव्य कृपा का प्रतीक है जो सांसारिक अशुद्धियों को धो देती है।

From the dense forest of Shiva's matted locks, the sacred Ganga flows and purifies all the regions it touches; he wears the great serpent as a garland around his neck. To the fierce and thunderous beat of his Damaru, he performed the intense Tandava dance — may that Shiva grant us all that is auspicious. The purifying stream from his locks is a symbol of divine grace descending to earth to wash away the impurities of the world.

jaṭābhujaṅgapiṅgalasphurattvaṇāmaṇiprabhā kadambakuṅkumadravapraliptadigvadhūmukhe | madāndhasindhurasphurattvaguttarīyamedure mano vinodamadbhutaṃ bibhartu bhūtabhari ||4||

शिव की जटाओं में लिपटे पिंगल सर्प के फण पर स्थित मणि की प्रभा से दिशारूपी वधुओं के मुख कदम्ब-कुंकुम से अनुलिप्त-से प्रतीत होते हैं। मदोन्मत्त हाथी की खाल को उत्तरीय (ऊपरी वस्त्र) की तरह धारण किए हुए वे अत्यंत भव्य दिखते हैं। समस्त प्राणियों के पालनकर्ता उस परम भूतभर्ता में मेरा मन अद्भुत आनंद पाए।

The reddish-brown gem on the hood of the serpent coiled in Shiva's matted hair radiates a brilliance that anoints the faces of the ten directions — personified as women adorned with kadamba flower and saffron. He is gloriously draped in the skin of a rut-maddened elephant as his upper garment. May my mind find its wondrous delight in that Lord who sustains all beings.

sahasralocanaprabhṛtyaśeṣalekhaśekharaḥ prasūnadhūlidhūraṇī vidhūsarāṅghripīṭhabhūḥ | bhujaṅgarājamālayā nibaddhajāṭajūṭakaḥ śriyai cirāya jāyatāṃ cakorabandhūśekharaḥ ||5||

सहस्र नेत्रधारी इंद्र सहित समस्त देवगण शिव के चरण-पीठ पर पुष्पों की धूलि चढ़ाते हैं जिससे वह धूसर हो गई है। उनकी जटाओं में सर्पराज की माला बंधी हुई है। जो चकोर पक्षी के प्रिय चंद्रमा को अपने मस्तक पर धारण करते हैं — वे शिव हमें चिरस्थायी समृद्धि और वैभव प्रदान करें।

The footrest at Shiva's feet is made grey by streams of floral pollen showered by Indra and all the hosts of gods who crown him with their homage. His matted locks are bound by a garland made of the king of serpents. May he who wears the moon — the beloved companion of the chakora bird — as his crest, bestow upon us lasting prosperity and glory.

karālabhālapaṭṭikādhagaddhagaddhagajjvalat dhanañjayāhutīkṛtapracaṇḍapañcasāyake | dharādharendranandanīkucāgracitraptraka- prakalpanaikaśilpini trilocane ratirmama ||6||

शिव के भयंकर भाल से धगद्धगद् की ध्वनि के साथ अग्नि प्रकट होकर प्रचंड कामदेव को भस्म कर देती है। वही त्रिलोचन पर्वतराज हिमालय की पुत्री पार्वती के वक्ष पर सुंदर पत्र-चित्र बनाने वाले एकमात्र कुशल शिल्पी भी हैं। इस त्रिनेत्र में — जो अपार शक्ति और कोमल प्रेम दोनों धारण करते हैं — मेरी अनन्य रति (प्रेम) है।

From the terrible expanse of Shiva's blazing forehead erupted a crackling fire — dhagad dhagad — that burned the mighty five-arrowed Kamadeva to ashes as an oblation. That same three-eyed lord is also the sole master-artist who delicately paints beautiful decorative leaf patterns on the breast of Parvati, daughter of the mountain king Himalaya. In that three-eyed Shiva of fierce power and tender love alike, I find my deepest delight.

navīnameghmaṇḍalīniruddhadurdharasphurat kuhūniśīthinītamaḥprabaddhabhaddhakandhraḥ | nilimpanirjharīdharastanotu kṛttisinduraḥ kalānidhānabandhuuraḥ śriyaṃ jagaddhuramdharaḥ ||7||

शिव का कंठ नवीन मेघमंडल और अमावस की मध्यरात्रि के अंधकार जैसा श्याम है — वह नीलकंठ का रंग है जो समस्त देवताओं की रक्षा के लिए हलाहल पीने से मिला। वे गंगाधर हैं, गजचर्म धारण करते हैं, समस्त कलाओं के निधान हैं और इस जगत का भार उठाने वाले हैं — वे हमें समृद्धि प्रदान करें।

Shiva's neck gleams with a darkness like that of the new moon midnight, obscured by banks of fresh storm clouds — the deep hue of the Halahala poison he consumed to save the world. He bears the divine river Ganga, wears the hide of an elephant, is the treasury of all arts and their beloved companion, and the one who carries the very burden of the cosmos — may that Lord bestow upon us all prosperity.

phalaśrutiḥ idaṃ hi nityamevamukttamuttamottamaṃ stavaṃ paṭhansmranbruvannaro viśuddhimeti santatam | hare gurau subhaktimāśu yāti nānyathā gatiḥ vimohanaṃ hi dehināṃ suśaṅkarasya cintanam ||8||

यह परम उत्तम स्तोत्र है जैसा कि आदि से कहा गया है; जो व्यक्ति इसे प्रतिदिन पढ़ता है, स्मरण करता है और बोलता है, वह निरंतर विशुद्धि को प्राप्त करता है। वह शीघ्र ही भगवान हर और अपने गुरु में उत्तम भक्ति प्राप्त करता है — इसके अतिरिक्त कोई और मार्ग नहीं है। निश्चय ही, शुभंकर शिव का चिंतन समस्त देहधारियों के लिए विमोहन — मोह से मुक्ति — है।

This is the supremely excellent hymn, declared to be so from the beginning; the person who reads, remembers, and recites it daily shall continuously attain inner purification. They will swiftly attain excellent devotion to Lord Hara — the remover of sins — and to their Guru; there is no other path. Indeed, the contemplation of auspicious Shankara is itself the liberation from delusion for all embodied beings.
