Surya Ashtakam

ādideva namastubhyaṃ prasīda mama bhāskara. divākara namastubhyaṃ prabhākara namo'stu te॥1॥

हे आदिदेव, आप को मेरा प्रणाम है — हे भास्कर, प्रकाश देने वाले, मुझ पर कृपा करें। हे दिवाकर, दिन के निर्माता, हे प्रभाकर, प्रकाश के स्रोत, आपको मेरा नमस्कार है। आप सभी देवताओं में प्रथम हैं और सम्पूर्ण सृष्टि को धारण करने वाले हैं।

O Ādideva, the primordial god, I bow to you — O Bhāskara, the one who illumines, be gracious unto me. O Divākara, maker of the day, O Prabhākara, creator of all radiance, I offer my salutations to you. You are the first among all gods, the eternal source of light who sustains all of creation.

saptāśvarathamārūḍhaṃ pracaṇḍaṃ kaśyapātmajam. śvetapadmadharam devaṃ taṃ sūryaṃ praṇamāmyaham॥2॥

मैं उन सूर्य देव को प्रणाम करता हूँ जो सात घोड़ों वाले रथ पर सवार हैं, जो अपने तेज में प्रचंड हैं और ऋषि कश्यप के पुत्र हैं। वे श्वेत कमल धारण किए हुए हैं, जो उनकी शक्ति के साथ-साथ उनकी पवित्रता और दिव्यता को दर्शाता है। ऐसे देदीप्यमान सूर्य देव को मेरा नमस्कार है।

I bow to that radiant Sūrya, who rides a chariot drawn by seven horses, who is fierce and blazing in his brilliance, and who was born as the son of the sage Kaśyapa. He holds a white lotus in his hand, embodying purity and divine grace even in his overwhelming power. I offer my complete salutation to this magnificent solar deity.

lohitaṃ rathamārūḍhaṃ sarvalokapitāmaham. mahāpāpaharaṃ devaṃ taṃ sūryaṃ praṇamāmyaham॥3॥

मैं उन सूर्य देव को प्रणाम करता हूँ जो लाल रंग के रथ पर आरूढ़ हैं और समस्त लोकों के पितामह हैं। वे महान पापों को नष्ट करने वाले और सभी प्राणियों के संचित कर्मभार को शुद्ध करने वाले हैं। ऐसे सर्वव्यापी सूर्य देव को मेरा सादर प्रणाम है।

I bow to the divine Sūrya, who rides his crimson-hued chariot and is the great progenitor of all worlds and all living beings. He is the remover of the greatest sins and transgressions, the purifying force that dissolves all accumulated karmic burdens. I offer my deepest salutation to this all-pervading solar divinity who is grandfather and sustainer of every realm of existence.

traiguṇyaṃ ca mahāśūraṃ brahmaviṣṇumaheśvaram. mahāpāpaharaṃ devaṃ taṃ sūryaṃ praṇamāmyaham॥4॥

मैं उस महावीर सूर्य देव को प्रणाम करता हूँ जो तीनों गुणों — सत्व, रज और तम — के मूर्तिमान स्वरूप हैं और जो ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और महेश्वर तीनों के सम्मिलित रूप हैं। वे एक साथ सृष्टि, पालन और संहार की शक्ति को धारण करते हैं। ऐसे परम सूर्य देव को जो महापापों का भी नाश करते हैं, मेरा प्रणाम है।

I bow to that great hero Sūrya, who embodies all three guṇas of creation and who is the combined essence of Brahmā the creator, Viṣṇu the preserver, and Maheśvara the destroyer. He is simultaneously the force of creation, sustenance, and dissolution that governs all of existence. I offer my humble salutation to this supreme solar deity who destroys even the greatest of sins.

bṛṃhitaṃ tejasāṃ puñjaṃ vāyumākāśameva ca. prabhuṃ ca sarvalokānāṃ taṃ sūryaṃ praṇamāmyaham॥5॥

मैं उन सूर्य देव को प्रणाम करता हूँ जो समस्त तेजस्वी ऊर्जाओं का विशाल संग्रह हैं, जो वायु और आकाश के रूप में सर्वत्र व्याप्त हैं और जो समस्त लोकों के स्वामी हैं। वे केवल एक भौतिक तारा नहीं हैं, बल्कि ब्रह्मांड की समस्त प्रकाशमय शक्तियों का परम केंद्र हैं। ऐसे सर्वलोक-प्रभु को मेरा सादर प्रणाम है।

I bow to Sūrya, who is the magnificent aggregation of all radiant energies, who is the very essence of air and ether pervading all of space, and who is the supreme lord of all worlds and realms. He is not merely a physical star but the concentrated totality of all luminous power in the universe. I offer my salutation to this lord of all existence whose radiance fills every dimension of creation.

bandhūkapuṣpasaṅkāśaṃ hārakuṇḍalabhūṣitam. ekacakradharaṃ devaṃ taṃ sūryaṃ praṇamāmyaham॥6॥

मैं उन सूर्य देव को प्रणाम करता हूँ जिनका रूप लाल-नारंगी बन्धूक पुष्प के समान देदीप्यमान है, जो हार और कुण्डलों से सुशोभित हैं, और जो एकमात्र चक्र को धारण करते हैं। उनकी यह सुंदरता केवल बाहरी आभूषण नहीं, बल्कि उनकी आंतरिक दिव्यता और जीवनदायी शक्ति का प्रकट रूप है। ऐसे भव्य सूर्य चक्रधारी को मेरा प्रणाम है।

I bow to the divine Sūrya, whose luminous form resembles the bright crimson bandhūka flower, who is beautifully adorned with garlands and radiant earrings, and who bears the single wheel — the solar disc — as his emblem and vehicle of cosmic motion. His beauty is not mere ornamentation but the visible expression of his inner divinity and life-giving power. I offer my salutation to this resplendently adorned lord of the solar wheel.

viśveśaṃ viśvakartāraṃ mahātejāḥ pradīpanam. mahāpāpaharaṃ devaṃ taṃ sūryaṃ praṇamāmyaham॥7॥

मैं उन सूर्य देव को प्रणाम करता हूँ जो विश्व के ईश्वर हैं, समस्त सृष्टि के निर्माता हैं, और जिनका महान तेज सब दिशाओं में प्रकाश प्रज्वलित करता है। वे केवल भौतिक जगत को प्रकाशित नहीं करते, बल्कि समस्त सृष्टि के मूल रचनात्मक चेतना के स्रोत हैं। ऐसे महापाप-नाशक, सर्व-निर्माता, सर्व-प्रकाशक सूर्य देव को मेरा प्रणाम है।

I bow to the divine Sūrya, who is the lord of the entire universe, the very creator and maker of all that exists, and the supreme illuminator whose great radiance kindles light in all directions. He does not merely light the physical world but is the initiating creative intelligence behind the whole of manifest existence. I offer my salutation to this destroyer of great sins, the all-creating, all-illuminating solar lord.

namaḥ pūrvāya giraye paścimāyādraye namaḥ. jyotirgaṇānāṃ pataye dinādhipataye namaḥ॥8॥

पूर्व के उस पर्वत को नमस्कार जहाँ से आप उदय होते हैं, और पश्चिम के उस पर्वत को नमस्कार जहाँ आप अस्त होते हैं। आकाश के समस्त ज्योतिर्गणों के स्वामी को और सभी दिनों के परमाधिपति को मेरा नमस्कार है। यह अंतिम श्लोक सूर्य की उदय से अस्त तक की पूर्ण यात्रा को सम्मान देता है और प्रत्येक दिन को दैवीय कृपा का एक सम्पूर्ण उपहार घोषित करता है।

Salutation to the eastern mountain where you rise, and salutation to the western mountain where you set; salutation to you, O lord of all the hosts of luminaries in the sky, and salutation to you, O supreme overlord of all the days. This closing verse completes the full arc of Sūrya's journey — from the dawn of beginning to the dusk of completion — and honors him as the sovereign of all light and all time. By saluting both his rising and his setting, the devotee acknowledges the sacred completeness of every single day as a gift of divine grace.
