Vishwanath Ashtakam

gaṅgātaraṅgaramaṇīyajaṭākalāpaṃ gaurīnirantaravibhūṣitavāmabhāgam | nārāyaṇapriyamanāṅgamadāpahāraṃ vārāṇasīpurapatiṃ bhaja viśvanātham ||1||

उन विश्वनाथ की वंदना करो जो वाराणसी नगरी के स्वामी हैं, जिनकी जटाओं में गंगा की लहरें विराजती हैं और जो परम सुंदर हैं। जिनके वाम भाग में माँ गौरी सदैव सुशोभित हैं और जो नारायण को प्रिय हैं। वे कामदेव के मद का नाश करने वाले हैं — ऐसे भगवान विश्वनाथ की भजो।

Worship Vishwanath, the Lord of Varanasi, whose beautiful matted locks are adorned by the flowing waves of the Ganges, and whose left side is eternally graced by Goddess Gauri. He is beloved of Narayana and the destroyer of the arrogance of Kama, the god of desire. He is the sovereign of the sacred city of Kashi — adore Him.

bhūtādhipaṃ bhujagabhūṣaṇabhūṣitāṅgaṃ vyāghrājināmbaradharaṃ jaṭilaṃ trinetraṃ | pāśāṅkuśābhayavarapradaśūlapāṇiṃ vārāṇasīpurapatiṃ bhaja viśvanātham ||2||

उन विश्वनाथ की वंदना करो जो समस्त प्राणियों के अधिपति हैं, जिनके अंगों में सर्प आभूषण की भाँति सुशोभित हैं और जो व्याघ्रचर्म धारण करते हैं। जो जटाधारी और त्रिनेत्र हैं, और जिनके हाथों में पाश, अंकुश, त्रिशूल हैं तथा जो अभय और वर प्रदान करते हैं।

Worship Vishwanath, the Lord of Varanasi, who is the sovereign of all beings, whose limbs are adorned with serpents as ornaments, and who wears a tiger skin as his garment. He is the matted-haired, three-eyed Lord, holding in his hands the noose, goad, and the trident, ever granting fearlessness and boons to his devotees.

śitikaṇṭhakaṇṭhakṛtakālakaḷaṅkabhūṣaṃ candrārdhaśekharamahāvratamauliratnam | gaṅgādharaṃ śaraṇadaṃ karuṇānidhānaṃ vārāṇasīpurapatiṃ bhaja viśvanātham ||3||

उन विश्वनाथ की वंदना करो जिन्होंने संसार की रक्षा के लिए हलाहल विष को कंठ में धारण किया और वही नीलकंठता उनका आभूषण बन गई। जो चंद्रकला से सुशोभित हैं, गंगाधर हैं, महाव्रतधारी हैं और जो करुणा के अक्षय भंडार हैं।

Worship Vishwanath, the Lord of Varanasi, who wears the dark stain of the halahala poison on his blue throat as though it were an ornament, and who is crowned with the crescent moon. He is the foremost among those who observe great vows, the bearer of the Ganges, the giver of refuge, and the very ocean of compassion.

pañcānanaṃ duritanāśanadakṣaśaktiṃ nāgendrahārakṛtakuṇḍalabhūṣaṇāḍhyam | devādidevamahimottamasākṣibhūtaṃ vārāṇasīpurapatiṃ bhaja viśvanātham ||4||

उन विश्वनाथ की वंदना करो जो पंचमुखी हैं और जिनमें समस्त पापों और दुखों का नाश करने की अद्भुत शक्ति है। जो नागराज को हार और कुंडल के रूप में धारण कर सुसज्जित हैं तथा जो देवों के देव, सर्वश्रेष्ठ महिमा के साक्षी हैं।

Worship Vishwanath, the Lord of Varanasi, who has five faces and possesses the supreme power to destroy all sins and misfortunes. He is richly adorned with the king of serpents as his garland and earrings, and he stands as the supreme witness to the glory of all the gods. He is the God of gods — adore Him.

tīvratviṣābhihitapāpaharaṃ praśāntaṃ sevyaṃ sadā bhavabhayāmbudhipārapotam | brahmaṇḍanāyakamanādimajam purāṇaṃ vārāṇasīpurapatiṃ bhaja viśvanātham ||5||

उन विश्वनाथ की वंदना करो जिनकी प्रखर ज्योति ही पापों का नाश करने वाली कही गई है और जो परम शांत स्वभाव वाले हैं। वे सदा सेव्य हैं और संसार के भय रूपी सागर से पार ले जाने वाली नाव हैं। वे ब्रह्माण्ड के नायक, अनादि, अजन्मे और सनातन हैं।

Worship Vishwanath, the Lord of Varanasi, whose fierce radiance is itself declared to be the remover of sins, and who is supremely tranquil in his nature. He is ever worthy of our devotion, serving as the boat that carries us across the fearful ocean of worldly existence to the other shore. He is the master of the universe, beginningless, unborn, and eternally ancient.

kalpāntakālamathitograviṣāṇḍakaṇṭhaṃ gaurīkaṭākṣavilasadbhavanāśahetum | svargāpavargaphaladaṃ praṇatapriyantaṃ vārāṇasīpurapatiṃ bhaja viśvanātham ||6||

उन विश्वनाथ की वंदना करो जिनके कंठ में कल्पांत काल का भीषण हलाहल विद्यमान है और जो गौरी की कटाक्ष कृपा से संसार-बंधन के नाश का कारण बनते हैं। वे स्वर्ग और अपवर्ग दोनों फल देने वाले हैं और अपने चरणों में झुकने वालों के परम प्रिय हैं।

Worship Vishwanath, the Lord of Varanasi, whose throat holds the terrible poison churned up at the end of cosmic time, and who — by the gracious glance of Gauri — becomes the very cause of destruction of worldly bondage. He is the giver of both heavenly rewards and final liberation, and he is supremely beloved by all who bow before him in surrender.

āśāṃ vihāya parihṛtya parasya nindāṃ pāpe ratiṃ ca sunivārya manaḥ samādhau | ādāya hṛtkamalamadhyagataṃ pareśaṃ vārāṇasīpurapatiṃ bhaja viśvanātham ||7||

कामनाओं को त्यागकर, दूसरों की निंदा से बचकर, पाप में रुचि को पूर्णतः रोककर और मन को समाधि में स्थिर करके — इस प्रकार हृदय-कमल के मध्य विराजमान परमेश्वर को धारण करते हुए वाराणसी के अधिपति विश्वनाथ की भजो।

Abandoning selfish desires, shunning the slander of others, completely restraining one's delight in sinful actions, and fixing the mind in deep meditation — thus holding in the lotus of one's heart the Supreme Lord who dwells within, worship Vishwanath, the Lord of Varanasi.

rāgadviṣobhayaharaṃ karaṇatrayeśaṃ vedāntasāramakhilāgamapāradṛśyam | kāśyāṃ hi mokṣamathavā pradadāti nityaṃ vārāṇasīpurapatiṃ bhaja viśvanātham ||8||

उन विश्वनाथ की वंदना करो जो राग और द्वेष दोनों को नष्ट करते हैं, जो मन-वाणी-काया तीनों करणों के स्वामी हैं और जो वेदान्त के सार तथा समस्त आगमों के पारदर्शी ज्ञान स्वरूप हैं। वे काशी में नित्य विराजते हुए जीवों को मोक्ष प्रदान करते हैं — यही उनका शाश्वत संकल्प है।

Worship Vishwanath, the Lord of Varanasi, who destroys both attachment and hatred, who is the master of the three instruments of body, speech, and mind, and who is the very essence of Vedanta — seen clearly only by those who have traversed all scriptures. He who dwells in Kashi eternally grants liberation — either here in this sacred city or ultimately, beyond all else.
