Grihasthapriya
The favourite who stayed — the name that overturns the ascetic hierarchy and declares the householder who cooks, cleans, commutes, and keeps the world running is dearer to Vishnu than the renunciant, because the four kilometres walked every morning sustain more lives than any tapas in any cave.

Etymology · व्युत्पत्ति
From Sanskrit 'gṛhastha' (गृहस्थ, householder — the second of the four ashramas of Hindu life; the one who maintains a home, raises children, earns a livelihood, supports society, and practices dharma not through renunciation but through engagement) + 'priya' (प्रिय, dear to, beloved, favourite) — He to whom the householder is dear. Not the sannyasi. Not the ascetic. Not the monk in the cave. The householder — the one who does the unglamorous work of keeping the world running.

महाभारत (शांति पर्व, अध्याय 12) में कथा — तपस्वी को विनम्र करने वाली। संन्यासी, तप पर गर्वित, गाँव की गृहिणी के पास। खाना बना रही। घोषणा: 'मैंने काम-क्रोध जीते। गुणातीत। शिक्षा लो।' बिना चूल्हे से देखे: 'रुको। पहले पति को खिलाऊँ।' संन्यासी नाराज़ — गृहिणी रुकवाए? अंततः मुड़ती: 'तुम्हारा तप जानती। यह भी कि सुबह कौवे ने मल गिराया और तुमने योगाग्नि से जलाया। जो कौवे को मल के लिए जलाए उसने क्रोध नहीं जीता — sophisticated तरीक़ा पाया। मैं पकाती, साफ़ करती, परोसती, बच्चे पालती — कोई जीवित नहीं जलाती। रसोई मेरा तप। परिवार आश्रम। और जो धर्म — भूखे को खिलाना, बच्चे पढ़ाना, बूढ़ों की सेवा — वही दुनिया सँभालता जो तुम्हें जंगल बैठकर ज्ञानी कहलाने का अवकाश देती।' संन्यासी विनम्र, पैर छूता। ग्रंथ: गृहस्थ का धर्म वह धुरी जिस पर बाकी सब घूमें। गृहस्थप्रिय जानता — इसीलिए गुफ़ा नहीं रसोई चुनी। जंगल नहीं flat। ध्यान गद्दी नहीं pressure cooker।

Think of the most unglamorous duty you perform daily — the cooking, the cleaning, the commute, the emails, the school run, the office meeting that could have been a Slack message. Close your eyes and hold that duty in your awareness. Now reframe: this is your tapasya. Not the forest kind. The kitchen kind. The duty that sustains the people who depend on you is not spiritually inferior to any meditation in any cave. It IS meditation — with a chopping board instead of a cushion and a school WhatsApp group instead of a mantra. Feel the dignity of the duty. Not pride — dignity. The quiet, structural importance of being the one who keeps showing up. Stay with that dignity for 5 minutes. You are Vishnu's favourite. Not the monk. You.
