Etymology · व्युत्पत्ति
From Sanskrit 'śāśvata' (शाश्वत, eternal, everlasting, permanent — that which does not decay, does not end, does not diminish across the passage of time) + 'priya' (प्रिय, beloved, dear, the one who is loved) — He who is the eternal beloved, the one whose love does not expire, whose devotion does not fade, whose presence in the heart does not thin with time. The beloved who was beloved before you were born and will be beloved after the last star dies.

सब मानवीय expire। crush फीका। passion ठंडा। शादी routine। दोस्ती जो रोज़ phone अब साल में birthday text। रोज़ शाम call वाले माता-पिता रविवार। प्रेमी जिसने सीना गरज से भरा — जिसकी खर्राटों में सोना सीख लिया। मानवीय प्रेम क्षय — झूठा इसलिए नहीं, मानवीय ध्यान सीमित, दशकों में बँटा पतला जैसे paint बहुत बड़ी दीवार पर। शाश्वतप्रिय — प्रेम नहीं पतलता। ध्यान अनंत इसलिए नहीं — प्रेम ध्यान से नहीं बना। अस्तित्व के पदार्थ से: सत्, होना, वह 'है-पन' जिसे बने रहने को ऊर्जा नहीं। पत्थर ऊर्जा ख़र्च नहीं करता पत्थर होने में। सागर गीले होते नहीं थकता। और विष्णु प्रेम करने या प्रेम पाने में नहीं। प्रेम संरचनात्मक — वास्तविकता के ताने-बाने में, हर परमाणु, साँस, भौतिकी के नियम, हर सूर्योदय जो बिना माँगे आता। सूर्य उगने से नहीं थकता। वह अथकता शाश्वतप्रिय। और भक्त जो जपे शाश्वत प्रेम नहीं माँग रहा। पहचान रहा कि प्रेम माँगने से पहले शाश्वत था — और भूलने के बाद भी।

भागवत पुराण (स्कंध 10, अध्याय 82) — कुरुक्षेत्र पुनर्मिलन, नाम 57 में आ चुका — प्रेम की शाश्वतता सबसे विनाशकारी परीक्षा से: वियोग। गोपियों ने कृष्ण दशकों से नहीं देखा। बालक वृंदावन छोड़ा। राजा कुरुक्षेत्र लौटा। बीच: विवाह, बच्चे, बुढ़ापा, विरह का धीमा domestication जो कभी ब्रह्मांड की सबसे तीव्र चीज़। फिर भी कुरुक्षेत्र में देखा — बड़ा, मुकुटधारी, रानियों से घिरा — भागवत कहता प्रेम 'अपूर्व' — जैसे पहली बार। याद किया नहीं। nostalgic नहीं। ताज़ा। दशकों में पतला नहीं, रास लीला की रात जैसी सांद्रता। शाश्वतप्रिय का अनुभवजन्य प्रमाण: बिना संपर्क दशकों टिका प्रेम, maintenance नहीं, refreshing नहीं — ध्यान से कभी बना ही नहीं। गोपियों की आत्मा के पदार्थ से। पदार्थ ख़ुद से अलग नहीं। गोपियों का प्रेम पतला नहीं क्योंकि प्रेम और गोपियाँ एक ही सामग्री।

सड़सठ। पत्नी तीन साल पहले गईं। चेन्नई का flat वही — furniture, रसोई, बेडरूम — पर भार बदला। सब भारी। सुबह। शाम। lunch और dinner के बीच जो कभी नहीं लगता जब जीवित थीं क्योंकि भरती थीं बिना notice किए, अब खाली होना ही notice। हर सुबह उठते और तीन सेकंड भूल जाते। हाथ उनकी तरफ़ बढ़ता। तकिया ठंडा। तीन सेकंड ख़त्म। याद शुरू। और सड़सठ में grief के बारे में कोई नहीं बताता: पतलता नहीं। तीन साल, प्रेम उतना ही भारी जितना उस दिन। Paint नहीं फैला। दीवार नहीं बढ़ी। प्रेम ठीक उतना मोटा जब रसोई में filter coffee बनाती कुछ गुनगुनातीं जो कभी पहचान नहीं सके — कोई तमिल गीत माँ का, कोई धुन बचपन से जिसका हिस्सा नहीं पर अड़तीस साल गुनगुनाहट बग़ल सोकर विरासत मिली। गुनगुनाहट गई। प्रेम नहीं। शाश्वत। तुम्हारे ख़त्म होने पर expire नहीं। शादी से पहले। मिलने से पहले। मिलने का कारण — 1986 त्रिची की शादी में दो अजनबी, सीने में कुछ ने उनमें कुछ पहचाना, पहचान नई नहीं। प्राचीन। शाश्वतप्रिय। शाश्वत प्रिय। वे शाश्वत इसलिए नहीं। प्रेम। और अभी भी। हर सुबह। तीन सेकंड। बढ़ता हाथ। ठंडा तकिया। प्रेम जो नहीं पतलता।

Think of someone you love who is no longer here — through death, distance, or the drift of life. Close your eyes and feel the love you still carry for them. Notice: it has not thinned. It may have changed shape — from daily presence to monthly memory to occasional ache — but the mass is the same. The love weighs the same as it did when they were here. That non-thinning is your proof of Shashvatapriya: love that is structural does not decay. It is not made of attention. It is made of the same material as existence. Close your eyes and hold the weight for 5 minutes. The weight is not grief. The weight is proof that something in you is incapable of expiring.

Chant 108 times on the anniversary of someone's passing — a parent, a partner, a friend, a teacher. Use a tulsi mala. Voice carries the weight of the years — not heavy with sadness but heavy with the recognition that love survived the death and is still here, still thick, still reaching for the cold pillow every morning. Best performed alone, in the room where the love was most present, with the awareness that the chanting is not for the departed but for the love itself, which does not need chanting to persist but is honoured by the acknowledgement.
