Etymology · व्युत्पत्ति
From Sanskrit 'megha' (मेघ, rain cloud — the dark, water-heavy monsoon cloud that holds life-giving rain) + 'śyāma' (श्याम, dark blue, the colour of dusk, of deep water, of infinite depth) — He whose complexion is the colour of a monsoon rain cloud. Not dark as absence. Dark as fullness — the cloud so heavy with water that it turns black before it gives everything to the earth.

भारत को गोरेपन का चार हज़ार साल पुराना जुनून है। शादी के विज्ञापन 'गोरा' ऐसे लिखते हैं जैसे योग्यता हो। Fair & Lovely — अब Glow & Lovely, rebrand जो किसी को मूर्ख नहीं बनाता — यह झूठ बेचता है कि हल्का बेहतर है। इस प्राचीन, व्यावसायिक रूप से प्रबलित, गहराई से आत्मसात रंग-श्रेणी में एक देवता आता है जो साँवला है। हल्का साँवला नहीं। 'Wheatish' नहीं। मेघ-श्याम। मॉनसून-श्याम। बारिश टूटने से पाँच मिनट पहले का आसमान जब धरती आख़िरकार पीती है। मेघश्याम सौंदर्य थीम का सबसे विध्वंसक नाम है क्योंकि वह वो गुण लेता है जिसे भारतीय समाज सबसे ज़्यादा दंडित करता है — साँवली त्वचा — और दिव्य घोषित करता है। 'साँवला होकर भी सुंदर' नहीं। साँवलेपन की वजह से सुंदर। गहराई का रंग। बारिश का रंग। उस एक चीज़ का रंग जो जून में हर किसान, हर खेत, हर सूखी नदी माँग रही है। जब विष्णु ने अपना रंग चुना, वह चुना जो पानी धारण करता है — जो जीवन देता है — जो भारत को सबसे ज़्यादा चाहिए और सबसे कम महत्व देता है। एक रंग में छिपी क्रांति।

भागवत पुराण (स्कंध 10, अध्याय 29) वह दृश्य बताता है जब कृष्ण वृंदावन में पूर्णिमा की रात रास लीला के लिए प्रकट हुए। गोपियाँ, बाँसुरी से खिंची, घर छोड़कर वन की ओर दौड़ीं। और ग्रंथ रुककर वर्णन करता है कि उन्होंने क्या देखा — आभूषण नहीं, मुकुट नहीं, मुद्रा नहीं — रंग। 'तमाल-श्याम' — तमाल वृक्ष सा गहरा। 'मेघ-श्याम' — भरे मॉनसून मेघ सा। भागवत अंधकार पर ठहरता है क्योंकि अंधकार ही सुंदरता है। उस रात पूर्णिमा श्वेत, दीप्त, वन को चाँदी से भर रही थी। और उस श्वेत चाँदनी के विरुद्ध, कृष्ण का श्याम रूप अस्तित्व में सबसे दृश्यमान वस्तु था — अंधकार के बावजूद नहीं, उसकी वजह से। प्रकाश के विरुद्ध अंधकार अभाव नहीं। इतनी सघन उपस्थिति कि अपना गुरुत्वाकर्षण बनाती है। गोपियाँ किसी गोरे देवता से प्रेम नहीं कर बैठीं। रात के आसमान से प्रेम किया जिसने मोर पंख पहना था।

NIT Trichy में दूसरा साल। रूममेट गोरा, लंबा, dating apps पर घंटों में match। तुम साँवले। 'Wheatish' नहीं, 'dusky' नहीं — वह साँवलापन जिसे matrimonial sites 'doesn't matter' code करती हैं जब बिल्कुल matter करता है। स्कूल में nicknames आसान थे: कालू। ब्लैकी। 'अरे dark chocolate।' हँस देते थे क्योंकि तेरह में और करो भी क्या? अब बीस में हँसना बंद पर आईना नहीं बदला। Campus internship apply करते हो consulting firm में। Interviewer — गोरा, polished, Delhi-English accent — resume मुश्किल से देखता है पहला सवाल पूछने से पहले। अच्छा जवाब देते हो। शानदार। Internship मिलती है। पर जो अंदर कुछ बदलता है वह offer letter नहीं। वह जुलाई की शाम है पहले हफ़्ते के बाद, Trichy की बारिश में हॉस्टल लौटते — वह बारिश जहाँ आसमान काला हो जाता है और पानी गरम और पूरी दुनिया गीली मिट्टी जैसी महकती है — और एक पेड़ के नीचे रुककर ऊपर बादलों को देखते हो और समझ आता है: यह मेरा रंग है। बारिश से पहले का आसमान। इतना भरा मेघ कि और नहीं सँभाल सकता। देने का रंग। वह रंग जिसका धरती मार्च से इंतज़ार कर रही है। तुम साँवले नहीं। मॉनसून हो। और मॉनसून अपने रंग के लिए माफ़ी नहीं माँगता। टूटता है और सबको खिलाता है।

Wait for a cloudy day — or if clear, close your eyes and imagine the sky five minutes before a monsoon downpour. See the clouds: not white, not grey, but the deep blue-black of full rain clouds. Feel their weight — they are heavy because they are full. Full of water the earth needs. Now visualize that colour as your own skin — wrapping your body like a cloud wraps the sky. Feel the fullness. Feel the weight of what you carry that the world needs. You are not dark. You are full. Stay in that fullness for 5 minutes. When the rain comes — inside you or outside — let it.
Mantra Practice · मंत्र जप
Chant 108 times during monsoon season — July or August — standing or sitting where you can hear the rain. Use a tulsi mala. Voice deep and resonant, like thunder that has not yet cracked, the sound of fullness about to break. This mantra is medicine for anyone who has been shamed for their colour. Best performed on Janmashtami (Krishna's birthday, always during monsoon), or during any rainstorm.
