Etymology · व्युत्पत्ति
From Sanskrit 'pīta' (पीत, yellow, golden — the colour of turmeric, marigold, sunrise, and auspiciousness in Indian culture) + 'ambara' (अम्बर, garment, cloth, the sky itself) + 'dhārī' (धारी, wearer) — He who wears the golden-yellow garment. Not gold as metal — gold as living colour. The Pitambara is silk the colour of the sun at 6 AM, the colour of haldi on a bride's face, the colour of the field when the mustard blooms in January across the entire Indo-Gangetic plain.

विष्णु कोई भी रंग पहन सकते थे। ब्रह्मांड धारण करते हैं — चाहें तो nebulae लपेट लें। पीला चुना। विशेष रूप से: हल्दी का पीला। सरसों के खेतों का। हर भारतीय शादी, हर पूजा, हर अंतिम संस्कार में गेंदे की मालाओं का। वह पीला जो कहता है: कुछ पवित्र हो रहा है। यह fashion choice नहीं। पीताम्बर वैसे पीला है जैसे ambulance लाल — signal दे रहा है। हर बार विष्णु को पीले रेशम में देखो, वस्त्र कह रहा है: ध्यान दो। जो देख रहे हो वह सिर्फ़ सुंदर नहीं। शुभ है। एक घटना है। एक देहलीज़ है। भारत में पीला शुरुआतों का रंग है — शादी से पहले हल्दी, नवजात पर हल्दी, फ़सल से पहले खेत में सरसों। पीताम्बरधारी शाश्वत शुरुआत का रंग लपेटे हैं। वे हमेशा देहलीज़ पर हैं। हमेशा भोर पर। वस्त्र रोशनी पकड़ता नहीं — रोशनी है, उसके शरीर पर लिपटी जो कभी शुरू करना नहीं रोकता।

हरिवंश और दक्षिणी आगम ग्रंथ बताते हैं कि विष्णु का पीताम्बर सिला नहीं, काटा नहीं, किसी शिल्पकार ने रंगा नहीं। 'स्वयम्प्रभा' है — स्व-दीप्तिमान। रेशम भीतर से चमकता है, जैसे मोमबत्ती कमरा रोशन करती है सूर्य की रोशनी reflect करके नहीं, अपनी उत्पन्न करके। वस्त्र विद्वान बताते हैं कि प्राचीन भारतीय कला में केवल दो आकृतियाँ लगातार पीले रेशम में दिखाई जाती हैं: विष्णु और भारतीय वधू। यह संयोग नहीं। दोनों देहलीज़ पर हैं। वधू नए जीवन की। विष्णु हर क्षण की — क्योंकि पालनहार के लिए हर क्षण आत्मा और ब्रह्मांड का विवाह है, एक मिलन जिसे हर सेकंड नए सिरे से पवित्र किया जाना चाहिए। पीताम्बर बूढ़ा नहीं होता, फीका नहीं, दाग़ नहीं — क्योंकि जो भोर यह दर्शाता है वह कोई एक सूर्योदय नहीं, वास्तविकता के रोशन किए जाने का निरंतर कर्म है, क्षण-क्षण, पहली बार, हमेशा।

जनवरी, पंजाब। अमृतसर से जालंधर बस में हो, और खिड़की से दुनिया पीली हो गई है। सरसों के खेत — क्षितिज तक हर दिशा में, पीला इतना गहरा कि पेंट किया लगे। सामने की सीट पर एक बुज़ुर्ग महिला बुनाई कर रही हैं, देख नहीं रहीं, क्योंकि सत्तर साल से हर जनवरी यह देखा है और बस मंगलवार है। पर तुम — नोएडा का 22 साल का जो जनवरी में पंजाब कभी नहीं आया — घूरना बंद नहीं कर पाते। फूल नहीं चौंकाते। पैमाना चौंकाता है। ज़मीन से आसमान तक पीला, क्षितिज से क्षितिज, जैसे किसी ने विष्णु का पीताम्बर पूरे राज्य पर ओढ़ा दिया। और उस पल कुछ समझ आता है जो किसी art gallery ने नहीं सिखाया: सुंदरता, इस पैमाने पर, सजावट नहीं। घोषणा है। सरसों का खेत सुंदर बनने की कोशिश नहीं कर रहा। प्रजनन की कर रहा है। पीला मधुमक्खियों को signal है: यहाँ आओ। जीवन हो रहा है। रंग aesthetic नहीं — biological है। पवित्र और कार्यात्मक। शुभ और कृषि। यही पीताम्बर है: सुंदरता जो सराही जाने के लिए नहीं, signal करने के लिए है कि कुछ जीवित शुरू हो रहा है।

Find something yellow — a marigold, a turmeric root, a mustard-coloured cloth, a post-it note, anything in the spectrum of Pitambara gold. Hold it in your hand. Close your eyes. Feel the warmth of the colour through your skin — yellow is the warmest colour on the visible spectrum, closest to the sun. Now imagine this warmth wrapping around your body like a garment. You are wearing the Pitambara. You are at a threshold. Every moment is a beginning. The warmth is not decoration — it is signal. Something sacred is happening: you are alive. Right now. This is the threshold. This is the dawn. Stay for 5 minutes.

Chant 108 times at sunrise — the moment the sky turns from grey to gold, the moment the world puts on its own Pitambara. Face east. Wear yellow if you can — a scarf, a dupatta, a kurta. Use a tulsi mala. Voice bright and warm, the first sound of a day that is just beginning. Best performed on Vasant Panchami (the festival of yellow), on Thursdays, or on any morning when the sunrise is visible.
