Etymology · व्युत्पत्ति
From Sanskrit 'vana' (वन, forest — the wild, uncurated, uncultivated world) + 'mālā' (माला, garland) + 'ī' (ई, possessor suffix) — He who wears the Vanamala, the forest garland that hangs from His neck to His knees. The Vanamala is not a temple garland of uniform marigolds. It is wild — flowers, leaves, buds, berries, and vines from every species, woven together in a garland that represents every living being in creation resting against His heart.
अर्थ
मंदिर की माला curated होती है: एक जैसे फूल, एक आकार, एक रंग, फूलवाले ने फ़ुट के हिसाब से सजाई। वनमाला इसका उलट है। जंगल को हार में पिरोया गया — जंगली फूल कमलों के बगल, काँटों के पास बेरियाँ, बेनाम पत्तियाँ जो जंगल के उन हिस्सों में उगती हैं जहाँ कोई वनस्पतिशास्त्री नहीं गया। विष्णु यह पहनते हैं। कटी-छँटी गुलाब माला नहीं। एक जंगली, असमान, अदम्य झरना हर वनस्पति प्रजाति का — कंधों से घुटनों तक, कुछ फूल ताज़े, कुछ मुरझाते, कुछ अभी कली। विष्णु पुराण कहता है वनमाला सभी जीवों का प्रतिनिधित्व करती है — हर रूप में हर आत्मा, बिना श्रेणी, बिना curation, एक ही दिव्य छाती से सटी। कमल काँटे से ऊपर नहीं। चमेली विष्णु के हृदय से खर-पतवार से ज़्यादा क़रीब नहीं। तुम इस माला में हो। सबसे अच्छे फूल की तरह नहीं। ठीक वही फूल जो हो — जंगली, असमान, शायद बेनाम — हर उस चीज़ के साथ एक ही हृदय से सटे जो जीवित है।
कथा · From tradition
विष्णु पुराण (पुस्तक 1, अध्याय 22) वनमाला का वर्णन एक ऐसी अंतरंगता से करता है जो इसे हर दूसरे आभूषण से ऊपर रखती है: 'वैजयंती माला, पाँच प्रकार के रत्नों से बनी, पाँच तत्त्वों का प्रतिनिधित्व करती है — पृथ्वी, जल, अग्नि, वायु, आकाश — और वनपुष्पों की माला उन तत्त्वों से जन्मे सभी प्राणियों का।' विष्णु का हर आभूषण एक ब्रह्मांडीय सिद्धांत है: कौस्तुभ चेतना, श्रीवत्स लक्ष्मी का निवास, सुदर्शन ब्रह्मांडीय व्यवस्था। पर वनमाला सिद्धांत नहीं। जनसंख्या है। वह माला जो सबको धारण करती है। पद्म पुराण एक विवरण जोड़ता है जो अधिकतर टीकाकार छोड़ देते हैं: माला जीवित है। फूल मुरझाते नहीं। कलियाँ खिलती रहती हैं। पत्तियाँ हरी रहती हैं। क्योंकि माला किसी वन से तोड़ी नहीं गई — वह वन है, लघुकृत और उसके गले में लिपटा जो उसे सँभालता है। जब विष्णु साँस लेते हैं, माला काँपती है। सृष्टि का हर प्राणी उनकी साँस से काँपता है और जानता नहीं क्यों।

भुवनेश्वर में कॉलेज farewell। Organizing committee — outgoing batch के पाँच students — ने group photo बनाया। Photographer ऊँचाई से arrange करता है, फिर department से, फिर हार मानकर बस कहता है 'सब adjust करो।' और सब करते हैं। CS topper उसके बगल खड़ा जो दो subjects repeat कर रहा। Department beauty queen कंधे-से-कंधा उस लड़की से जिसने चार साल तीन कुर्ते बारी-बारी पहने क्योंकि बस इतने थे। Class clown झारसुगुड़ा के उस शांत लड़के के पीछे जिसने चार साल में ग्यारह शब्द बोले पर एक बार रात 2 बजे hostel Wi-Fi ठीक किया और एक हफ़्ते भगवान रहा। South Delhi का अमीर बच्चा उसी frame में जिसके पास full scholarship है और माँ बालासोर में मछली बेचती है। फ़ोटो में सब एक size। lens से एक दूरी। बराबर रोशनी। वह फ़ोटो वनमाला है — मानव फूलों की हर प्रजाति, जंगली और असमान और बेमेल, एक frame में लिपटी। कोई श्रेणी नहीं। कोई curation नहीं। बस निकटता। और बीस साल बाद जब वह फ़ोटो देखोगे, याद नहीं रहेगा कौन top किया कौन fail। याद रहेगा कि एक ही माला में थे। इतना काफ़ी था।
Meditation · ध्यान
Go outside and pick five things from nature — a leaf, a pebble, a flower, a twig, a blade of grass. Not beautiful ones. Random ones. Whatever your hand finds first. Bring them inside and arrange them in a line on your desk. Look at them. None of them match. None of them would be selected for a bouquet. They are wild, accidental, imperfect. Now drape them — loosely, imagining — around your own chest, the way Vanamala drapes from Vishnu's neck. These random, unmatched pieces of the natural world are resting against your heart. This is how Vishnu carries creation: not selected, not matched, just held. Sit with this arrangement for 5 minutes. You are wearing the forest.
Mantra Practice · मंत्र जप
Chant 108 times outdoors — in a park, a garden, a forest, or even a potted-plant balcony. Anywhere green things grow. Use a tulsi mala. Voice warm and inclusive, as if calling a roll-call where every name gets the same attention. Best performed on Thursdays, during Shravan month, or on any day you walk through a garden and notice that beauty does not require uniformity.
