वाराणसी का विशालाक्षी पीठ उस नगर के सबसे पुराने जीवन्त मन्दिरों में से एक है जो सम्भवतः विश्व की सबसे पुरानी निरन्तर बसी हुई बस्ती है। विशाल-नयना देवी उस तट से अधिकांश सभ्यताओं के अस्तित्व से पहले से गंगा देख रही हैं। उनके सामने खड़े होना उन आँखों द्वारा देखे जाने का अनुभव है जिन्होंने सब कुछ देखा है।
