नीलकण्ठ की कथा भारत का सबसे स्थायी आत्म-बलिदान का रूपक है। समुद्र मंथन में जब हलाहल विष निकला और सृष्टि को नष्ट करने लगा, तो शिव ने अकेले उसे पीकर अपने कंठ में रोक लिया।
