Ganga Comes to Pratipa; the Birth of Shantanu

While King Pratipa sits in prayer at Gangadvara, Ganga in the form of a woman rises from the river, sits on his right thigh and asks him to take her. He refuses, since the right thigh is the seat of children and daughters-in-law, and chooses her instead as wife for his future son; she agrees on condition that the son never questions her deeds. Pratipa and his queen perform austerities, and Shantanu, the former Mahabhisha, is born, raised and trained. Pratipa tells him to accept the divine woman without question, crowns him and retires to the forest; Shantanu rules as a model king, and while hunting along the Ganga he meets a radiant woman and begs her to be his wife.
