The Birth of Drupada

Janamejaya asks how Drupada himself was born. Vaishampayana tells how a childless king of Panchala practised long austerities in the forest; when the apsaras Menaka appeared by the Ganga in spring, his seed fell to the ground and he trod on it in shame, and from it a son was born, named Drupada by the sages. Raised in Bharadvaja's hermitage and taught the Vedas and archery alongside Drona, Drupada was consecrated king of the Panchalas after his father's death and ruled righteously.
