The Kurus Mourn the Pandavas

At dawn the people of Varanavata find the house of lac in ashes, with Purochana and a Nishada woman and her five sons burned inside, and believe the Pandavas and Kunti dead; they blame Duryodhana and send word to Dhritarashtra. The king, glad at heart but grieving outwardly, orders funeral rites, and the Kurus go to the Ganga to offer water to the dead. Bhishma breaks into a long lament, until Vidura quietly tells him that he arranged the escape through a tunnel and that the Pandavas are alive. Bhishma rejoices in secret, while the city remains divided over whether the brothers are dead or alive.

Verse 1 (1.162.1)

atha rātryāṃ vyatītāyāmaśeṣo nāgaro janaḥ | tatrājagāma tvarito didṛkṣuḥ pāṇḍunandanān

When the night had passed, the whole population of the city came there in haste, eager to see the sons of Pandu.

Verse 2 (1.162.2)

nirvāpayanto jvalanaṃ te janā dadṛśustataḥ | jātuṣaṃ tadgṛhaṃ dagdhamamātyaṃ ca purocanam

As they put out the fire, the people saw that the house of lac had burned down, and with it the minister Purochana.

Verse 3 (1.162.3)

nūnaṃ duryodhanenedaṃ vihitaṃ pāpakarmaṇā | pāṇḍavānāṃ vināśāyetyevaṃ te cukruśurjanāḥ

"Surely this was contrived by the evil-doing Duryodhana to destroy the Pandavas!" the people cried aloud.

Verse 4 (1.162.4)

vidite dhṛtarāṣṭrasya dhārtarāṣṭro na saṃśayaḥ | dagdhavānpāṇḍudāyādānna hyetatpratiṣiddhavān

"There is no doubt that Dhritarashtra's son burned Pandu's heirs with Dhritarashtra's knowledge, for he did not forbid it.

Verse 5 (1.162.5)

nūnaṃ śāntanavo'pīha na dharmamanuvartate | droṇaśca viduraścaiva kṛpaścānye ca kauravāḥ

Surely even Shantanu's son here does not follow dharma, nor do Drona and Vidura, nor Kripa and the other Kauravas.

Note on the text: Corrected धर्मनुवर्तते → धर्ममनुवर्तते (misprint in Wikisource; a dropped म leaves no valid word and the half-line a syllable short — the critical edition reads dharmam anuvartate).

Verse 6 (1.162.6)

nāvekṣante ha taṃ dharmaṃ dharmātmāno'pyaho vidheḥ | śrutavanto'pi vidvāṃso dhanavadvaśagā aho

Alas for fate! Righteous though they are, they do not look to that dharma. Alas, learned and wise as they are, they are in the power of the wealthy.

Note on the text: Removed a stray wiki mark (a backtick) at the start. Not in the critical edition (found in the vulgate recension). (The critical edition carries it in its apparatus, 1.137.5*1485, lines 1–2.)

Verse 7 (1.162.7)

sādhūnanāthāndharmiṣṭhānsatyavrataparāyaṇān | nāvekṣante mahānto'pi daivaṃ teṣāṃ parāyaṇam

Even the great do not look after the good and the unprotected, the most righteous, those devoted to the vow of truth; fate alone is their refuge.

Note on the text: Corrected धर्मिष्ठात् → धर्मिष्ठान् (misprint in Wikisource; the accusative plural is needed beside साधून् and अनाथान् — the critical edition's apparatus reads dharmiṣṭhān). Not in the critical edition (found in the vulgate recension). (The critical edition carries it in its apparatus, 1.137.5*1485, lines 3–4.)

Verse 8 (1.162.8)

te vayaṃ dhṛtarāṣṭrāya preṣayāmo durātmane | saṃvṛttaste paraḥ kāmaḥ pāṇḍavāndagdhavānasi

We shall send word to the wicked Dhritarashtra: 'Your dearest wish has come true. You have burned the Pandavas.'"

Verse 9 (1.162.9)

tato vyapohamānāste pāṇḍavārthe hutāśanam | niṣādīṃ dadṛśurdagdhāṃ pañcaputrāmanāgasam

Then, as they cleared away the fire in search of the Pandavas, they saw the innocent Nishada woman burned to death with her five sons.

Verse 10 (1.162.10)

itaḥ paśyata kuntīyaṃ dagdhā śete tapasvinī | putraiḥ sahaiva vārṣṇeyī hantetyāhuḥ sma nāgarāḥ

"Look here! Kunti of the Vrishnis, the ascetic lady, lies burned together with her sons. Alas!" the townspeople said.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition (found in the vulgate recension). (The critical edition carries it in its apparatus, 1.137.7*1486.)

Verse 11 (1.162.11)

khanakena tu tenaiva veśma śodhayatā bilam | pāṃsubhiḥ pihitaṃ tacca puruṣaistairna lakṣitam

But the tunnel, which that same digger had covered over with earth while clearing the house, went unnoticed by those men.

Verse 12 (1.162.12)

tataste preṣayāmāsurdhṛtarāṣṭrāya nāgarāḥ | pāṇḍavānagninā dagdhānamātyaṃ ca purocanam

Then the townspeople sent word to Dhritarashtra that the Pandavas had been burned in the fire, and the minister Purochana with them.

Verse 13 (1.162.13)

śrutvā tu dhṛtarāṣṭrastadrājā sumahadapriyam | vināśaṃ pāṇḍuputrāṇāṃ vilalāpa suduḥkhitaḥ

Hearing that most unwelcome news, the destruction of Pandu's sons, King Dhritarashtra lamented in deep sorrow.

Verse 14 (1.162.14)

antarhṛṣṭamanāścāsau bahirduḥkhasamanvitaḥ | antaḥśīto bahiścoṣṇo grīṣme'gādhahrado yathā

Inwardly he was glad, outwardly full of grief: cold within and hot without, like a deep pool in summer.

Note on the text: Corrected ह्वदोयथा → ह्रदो यथा (misprint in Wikisource; व for र in ह्रद "pool", and the words run together — the critical edition's apparatus reads agādhahrado yathā). Not in the critical edition (found in the vulgate recension). (The critical edition carries it in its apparatus, 1.137.10*1488.)

For those who died there too, and for any friends they have, let them raise memorials over the remains, white and large.

Verse 18 (1.162.18)

mama dagdhā mahātmānaḥ kulavaṃśavivardhanāḥ

Note on the text: Corrected निराभरणवेष्टनः → निराभरणवेष्टनाः (misprint in Wikisource; the plural is needed to agree with एकवस्त्रा निरानन्दा — the critical edition's apparatus reads nirābharaṇaveṣṭanāḥ).
