Vyasa Settles the Pandavas in Ekachakra

Leaving the hermitage of Shalihotra in the guise of ascetics, the Pandavas wander through Matsya, Trigarta and Panchala, sometimes carrying their mother, until they meet their grandfather Vyasa on the road. Vyasa tells them he knows of Ghatotkacha's birth, comforts Kunti with the teaching that every doer reaps the fruit of good and evil deeds, and settles them in a brahmin's house in the nearby town of Ekachakra before departing.

Then all the Pandavas, having been honoured with forest fare at the hermitage of Shalihotra, took leave of that great sage.

Note on the text: Removed the speaker line वैशंपायन उवाच and a stray backtick, which had slipped into the verse text; the speaker is set from it. Not in the critical edition (found in the vulgate recension).

śālihotraprasādena labdhvā prītimavāpya ca | te vanena vanaṃ gatvā ghnanto mṛgagaṇānbahūn | apakramya yayū rājaṃstvaramāṇā mahārathāḥ

Having won the favour and goodwill of Shalihotra, they went from forest to forest, killing many herds of deer; then, O king, the great warriors moved on in haste

Sometimes the great warriors hurried along carrying their mother; sometimes they were weary in the wilderness, and sometimes they rested in good spirits.

Note on the text: Removed a stray backtick and quote mark around the second line (wiki marks). Only the first line is in the critical edition (1.144.4a); the second is found in the vulgate recension.

Verse 7 (1.170.7)

क्वचिच्छन्देन गच्छन्तस्ते जग्मुः प्रसभं पुनः । पथि द्वैपायनं सर्वे ददृशुः स्वपितामहम् ॥

Sometimes going at their own pace, they pressed on again with vigour; and on the road they all saw their grandfather, Dvaipayana.

Note on the text: Corrected द्वैपायन → द्वैपायनं (misprint in Wikisource; dropped anusvara of the object, as in the critical edition's apparatus). The first line is the critical edition's 1.144.4c; the second is found in the vulgate recension.

avaśyaṃ labhate kartā phalaṃ vai puṇyapāpayoḥ | duṣkṛtasya phalenaiva prāptaṃ vyasanamuttamam

तस्मान्माधवि मानार्हे मा च शोके मनः कृथाः ॥

tasmānmādhavi mānārhe mā ca śoke manaḥ kṛthāḥ

Therefore, Madhavi, worthy of honour, do not give your mind over to grief."

Note on the text: Re-split: Wikisource prints this half-verse alone as the end of Vyasa's speech, followed by the heading वैशंपायन उवाच; the extraction had joined it to the narrator's next half-verse, which now opens verse 15. Not in the critical edition (found in the vulgate recension).
