The Brahmin's Wife Offers Herself

The Brahmin's wife urges her grieving husband not to lament but to let her go to the rakshasa in his place. A wife's highest duty, she argues, is her husband's good; as a widow she could neither raise their son nor guard their daughter in a world of predatory men, and a man may marry again while a woman's dharma lies in her husband alone. Deeply moved, the Brahmin embraces her and weeps, and tells her that a wise man never gives up his wife or his children.

इमामपि च ते बालामनाथां परिभूय माम् । अनर्हाः प्रार्थयिष्यन्ति शूद्रा वेदश्रुतिं यथा ॥

imāmapi ca te bālāmanāthāṃ paribhūya mām | anarhāḥ prārthayiṣyanti śūdrā vedaśrutiṃ yathā

Verse 20 (1.172.20)

तां चेदहं न दित्सेयं सद्गुणैरुपबृंहिताम् । प्रमथ्यैनां हरेयुस्ते हविर्ध्वाङ्क्षा इवाध्वरात् ॥

tāṃ cedahaṃ na ditseyaṃ sadguṇairupabṛṃhitām | pramathyaināṃ hareyuste havirdhvāṅkṣā ivādhvarāt

And if I would not give her, endowed as she is with fine qualities, they would carry her off by force, as crows carry off the oblation from a sacrifice.

Verse 21 (1.172.21)

संप्रेक्षमाणा पुत्रीं ते नानुरूपमिवात्मनः । अनर्हवशमापन्नामिमां चापि सुतां तव ॥

On one side the whole family, on the other oneself, who makes the family grow: which of the two weighs more, learned one? The self is greater than the family.

Note on the text: Removed a stray backtick before the second line, and corrected कोधिको → कोऽधिको (misprint in Wikisource; missing avagraha in कः + अधिकः, as in the critical edition's apparatus, ko 'dhiko). Do not speak so, my good wife; stay here, slender-waisted one. A wise man should never abandon his wife, or his children either.

Note on the text: Speaker set to the Brahmin: the husband's reply to his wife (Wikisource prints no heading after the narration of verse 48). Removed a stray backtick. Not in the critical edition (found in the vulgate recension; CE apparatus 1.146.36*1621).
