Aurva Casts His Anger into the Sea

Aurva answers the Ancestors that a vow made in anger cannot be abandoned without his own ruin, and that rightful anger is needed to curb the wicked: whoever can stop evil and does not shares in it, and the worlds stood by while the Bhrigus were slaughtered. Yet he will not defy his Ancestors, and asks them how to dispose of the fire of his wrath. They tell him to release it into the waters, on which the worlds rest; he casts it into the ocean, where, as the great horse's head, it drinks the waters. Vasishtha closes by urging Parashara not to destroy the worlds either.

Verse 1 (1.196.1)

uktavānasmi yāṃ krodhātpratijñāṃ pitarastadā | sarvalokavināśāya na sā me vitathā bhavet

"The vow I made then in anger, Fathers, to destroy all the worlds — it must not prove false.

Verse 2 (1.196.2)

vṛthāroṣapratijño vai nāhaṃ jīvitumutsahe | anistīrṇo hi māṃ roṣo dahedagnirivāraṇim

I cannot bear to live with my vow of wrath made vain. Unspent, my rage would burn me as fire burns the kindling stick.

Verse 3 (1.196.3)

yo hi kāraṇataḥ krodhaṃ saṃjātaṃ kṣantumarhati | nālaṃ sa manujaḥ samyak trivargaṃ parirakṣitum

For the man who forgives anger that has arisen for good cause is not fit to guard the three aims of life as he should.

Verse 4 (1.196.4)

aśiṣṭānāṃ niyantā hi śiṣṭānāṃ parirakṣitā | sthāne roṣaḥ prayuktaḥ syānnṛpaiḥ sarvajigīṣubhiḥ

Anger, rightly applied by kings who seek to conquer all, restrains the wicked and protects the good.

Verse 5 (1.196.5)

aśrauṣamahamūrustho garbhaśayyāgatastadā | ārāvaṃ mātṛvargasya bhṛgūṇāṃ kṣatriyairvadhe

Lying then in my bed in the womb, within the thigh, I heard the wailing of my mothers when the Bhrigus were slaughtered by the Kshatriyas.

Verse 6 (1.196.6)

sāmarairhi yadā loke bhṛgūṇāṃ kṣatriyādhamaiḥ | āgarbhotsādanaṃ kṣāntaṃ tadā māṃ manyurāviśat

When the world, gods and all, tolerated the vile Kshatriyas' wiping out of the Bhrigus down to the unborn, then wrath entered me.

Verse 7 (1.196.7)

prakīrṇakeśāḥ kila me mātaraḥ pitarastathā | bhayātsarveṣu lokeṣu nādhijagmuḥ parāyaṇam

My mothers, they say, with their hair dishevelled, and my fathers too, found no refuge anywhere in all the worlds, so great was their fear.

Verse 8 (1.196.8)

tānbhṛgūṇāṃ yadā dārānkaścinnābhyupapadyata | mātā tadā dadhāreyamūruṇaikena māṃ śubhā

When no one would take in those wives of the Bhrigus, then this good mother of mine carried me in one thigh.

Verse 9 (1.196.9)

pratiṣeddhā hi pāpasya yadā lokeṣu vidyate | tadā sarveṣu lokeṣu pāpakṛnnopapadyate

When there is someone in the worlds to forbid evil, then in none of the worlds does an evildoer arise.

Verse 10 (1.196.10)

yadā tu pratiṣeddhāraṃ pāpo na labhate kvacit | tiṣṭhanti bahavo lokāstadā pāpeṣu karmasu

But when evil finds no one anywhere to forbid it, then many people hold fast to evil deeds.

Verse 11 (1.196.11)

jānannapi ca yaḥ pāpaṃ śaktimānna niyacchati | īśaḥ sanso'pi tenaiva karmaṇā saṃprayujyate

And he who knows of evil and, though able, does not restrain it, master though he is, is bound up with that very deed.

Verse 12 (1.196.12)

rājabhiśceśvaraiścaiva yadi vai pitaro mama | śaktairna śakitāstrātumiṣṭaṃ matveha jīvitam

If the kings and the lords, able as they were, did not save my fathers, because they held their own lives here dear,

Verse 13 (1.196.13)

ata eṣāmahaṃ kruddho lokānāmīśvaro hyaham | bhavatāṃ ca vaco nālamahaṃ samabhivartitum

then I am angry with these worlds, for I am their master. Yet I am not able to go against your word.

Verse 14 (1.196.14)

mamāpi cedbhavedevamīśvarasya sato mahat | upekṣamāṇasya punarlokānāṃ kilbiṣādbhayam

And if I, being master, were in turn to look on and do nothing, I too would have great cause to fear from the sin of the worlds.

Verse 15 (1.196.15)

yaścāyaṃ manyujo me'gnirlokānādātumicchati | dahedeṣa ca māmeva nigṛhītaḥ svatejasā

And this fire born of my wrath, which seeks to consume the worlds, if held back, will burn me myself with its own heat.

Verse 16 (1.196.16)

bhavatāṃ ca vijānāmi sarvalokahitepsutām | tasmādvidhaddhvaṃ yacchreyo lokānāṃ mama ceśvarāḥ

I know that you wish the good of all the worlds. So, my lords, ordain what is best for the worlds and for me."

Verse 17 (1.196.17)

ya eṣa manyujaste'gnirlokānādātumicchati | apsu taṃ muñca bhadraṃ te lokā hyapsu pratiṣṭhitāḥ

"This fire born of your wrath, which seeks to consume the worlds, release it into the waters, and good fortune be with you; for the worlds rest upon the waters.

Verse 18 (1.196.18)

āpomayāḥ sarvarasāḥ sarvamāpomayaṃ jagat | tasmādapsu vimuñcemaṃ krodhāgniṃ dvijasattama

All the juices of life are made of water; the whole universe is made of water. So release this fire of anger into the waters, best of the twice-born.

Verse 19 (1.196.19)

ayaṃ tiṣṭhatu te vipra yadīcchasi mahodadhau | manyujo'gnirdahannāpo lokā hyāpomayāḥ smṛtāḥ

Let this fire born of your wrath stay in the great ocean, brahmin, if you so wish, burning the waters; for the worlds are said to be made of water.

Verse 20 (1.196.20)

evaṃ pratijñā satyeyaṃ tavānagha bhaviṣyati | na caivaṃ sāmarā lokā gamiṣyanti parābhavam

In this way your vow will come true, sinless one, and the worlds with their immortals will not come to ruin."

Verse 21 (1.196.21)

tatastaṃ krodhajaṃ tāta aurvo'gniṃ varuṇālaye | utsasarja sa caivāpa upayuṅkte mahodadhau

Then, child, Aurva cast that fire born of his wrath into the abode of Varuna, and it consumes the waters in the great ocean.

Verse 22 (1.196.22)

mahaddhayaśiro bhūtvā yattadvedavido viduḥ | tamagnimudgiradvaktrātpibatyāpo mahodadhau

Becoming a great horse's head, the one that those who know the Veda know of, it spews that fire from its mouth and drinks the waters in the great ocean.

Note on the text: Corrected तमग्निमुद्हिरद्वक्त्रात् → तमग्निमुद्गिरद्वक्त्रात् (misprint in Wikisource; ह for ग in उद्गिरत्, "spewing", CE udgiran).

Verse 23 (1.196.23)

So you too, good fortune be with you, should not destroy the worlds, Parashara, best of the wise, for you know the higher worlds.

Note on the text: Corrected पराशरं → पराशर (misprint in Wikisource; a stray anusvara on the vocative, since Parashara is the one addressed, CE parāśara).
