Arjuna and the Crocodile of Saubhadra
On the southern coast Arjuna finds five sacred fords that the ascetics shun, because five crocodiles live in them and carry people off. Ignoring their warning, he bathes in the Saubhadra ford, is seized by a crocodile, and drags it out of the water, whereupon it turns into a beautiful woman. She tells him she is the apsara Varga, a favourite of Kubera, and that she and four companions were cursed by a brahmin whose austerities they had tried to disturb, to live as crocodiles in the water for a hundred years.
