Jarita Leaves Her Sons
Jarita assures her sons that a hawk has carried off the rat from the hole, but they refuse to believe her and fear other rats. They tell her that an uncertain death in the fire is better than certain death in the hole, and urge her, still young and lovely, to follow her husband and bear other sons. At last she flies off to a place safe from the fire, and as the flames reach the fledglings, the eldest, Jaritari, begins to address Agni.
