Preparing the Snake Sacrifice
With his ministers' approval Janamejaya vows to hold a snake sacrifice and asks his priests for a rite that will cast Takshaka and his kin into the fire. The priests tell him of the snake sacrifice made by the gods for his sake, which only he can perform. The sacrificial ground is measured and built and the king is consecrated, but a master builder warns that, judging by the place and time of the measuring, the rite will not be completed and a brahmin will be the cause; the king orders that no stranger be admitted.
