The Birth of Chyavana and Bhrigu's Curse on Agni

Hearing Agni's answer, the rakshasa takes the form of a boar and carries Puloma off. In her terror the child falls from her womb and is called Chyavana, "the fallen one"; at the sight of his sun-bright form the rakshasa is burnt to ashes. Brahma comforts the weeping Puloma, whose tears become the river Vadhusara, and when Bhrigu learns from her that it was Agni who betrayed her, he curses Agni to become the eater of all things.

Fair-hipped Puloma, stunned with grief, took up her son Chyavana, the Bhargava, the delight of Bhrigu, and went on her way.

sa evaṃ cyavano jajñe bhṛgoḥ putraḥ pratāpavān | taṃ dadarśa pitā tatra cyavanaṃ tāṃ ca bhāminīm | sa pulomāṃ tato bhāryāṃ papraccha kupito bhṛguḥ
