The Line of Puru, from Brahma to Janamejaya

In a prose genealogy, Vaishampayana traces Janamejaya's ancestry from Brahma through Daksha, Kashyapa, Vivasvan, Manu and Yayati to Puru, and then king by king, naming each king's wife and the son she bore, down through Dushyanta and Bharata, Hasti, Kuru, Pratipa and Shantanu. He tells briefly of Satyavati and Vyasa, the births of Dhritarashtra, Pandu and Vidura, Pandu's curse and the births of the Pandavas, and their wives and thirteen sons. The line closes with Abhimanyu, Parikshit, Janamejaya himself and his grandson Ashvamedhadatta.

dhṛtarāṣṭrātputraśataṃ babhūva gāndhāryāṃ varadānāddvaipāyanasya teṣāṃ ca | dhārtarāṣṭrāṇāṃ catvāraḥ pradhānāḥ duryodhano duśśāsano vikarṇaścitrasenaśceti

To Dhritarashtra a hundred sons were born in Gandhari, through Dvaipayana's boon. Of these sons of Dhritarashtra four were foremost: Duryodhana, Duhshasana, Vikarna and Chitrasena.

Verse 59 (1.63.59)

pāṇḍostu kuntī mādrīti strīratne babhūvatuḥ | sa mṛgayāṃ caranmaithunagatamṛṣiṃ mṛgacāriṇaṃ bāṇena jaghāna

Pandu had two jewels among women, Kunti and Madri. Once, while out hunting, he shot with an arrow a seer who was roaming in the form of a deer and was mating.

Verse 60 (1.63.60)

sa bāṇaviddha uvāca pāṇḍum | atra śloko bhavati

Pierced by the arrow, the seer spoke to Pandu. On this there is a verse:

Verse 61 (1.63.61)

yo'kṛtārthaṃ hi māṃ krūra bāṇenāhan mṛgavratam | tvāmapyetādṛśo bhāvaḥ kṣipramevāgamiṣyati

"Cruel one, since you struck me down with an arrow while I was keeping the deer-vow, before my desire was fulfilled, the same state will soon come upon you too."

Note on the text: Corrected ग्रूर → क्रूर and बाणेनाघ्ना → बाणेनाहन् (misprints in Wikisource; following the reading of the critical edition's apparatus). Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension; CE apparatus 1.90 *902).

Verse 62 (1.63.62)

iti mṛgavratacāriṇā ṛṣiṇā śaptaḥ | sa viṣaṇṇarūpaḥ pāṇḍustaṃ śāpaṃ pariharannopasarpati bhārye

Thus Pandu was cursed by the seer who kept the deer-vow. Downcast, and guarding against the curse, he did not approach his wives.

Verse 63 (1.63.63)

kadācitsa āha | svacāpalyādidaṃ prāptavānaham | purāṇeṣu paṭhyamānaṃ śṛṇomi nānapatyasya lokāḥ santīti

One day he said: "I have come to this through my own rashness. I hear it recited in the Puranas that there are no worlds for one who has no offspring."

Verse 64 (1.63.64)

sā tvaṃ madarthe putrānutpādayeti kuntīmuvāca

"So you must bring forth sons for me," he said to Kunti.

Verse 65 (1.63.65)

sā kuntī putrānutpādayāmāsa dharmādyudhiṣṭhiraṃ mārutādbhīmasenamindrādarjunamiti | sa hṛṣṭarūpaḥ pāṇḍuruvāca | iyaṃ te sapatnī bhavati mādryanapatyā vrīḍitā sādhvī asyāmapatyamutpādyatāmiti

Kunti bore sons: Yudhishthira by Dharma, Bhimasena by the Wind god, and Arjuna by Indra. Delighted, Pandu said, "This co-wife of yours, Madri, is childless and ashamed, a virtuous woman. Let offspring be brought forth in her too."

Verse 66 (1.63.66)

sā kuntī tasyai mādryai tatheti vratamādideśa | tatastasyāṃ nakulasahadevau yamāvaśvibhyāṃ jajñāte

Kunti said, "So be it," and taught Madri the sacred formula. Then the twins Nakula and Sahadeva were born to her by the two Ashvins.

Verse 67 (1.63.67)

mādrīṃ tu khalu svalaṅkṛtāṃ dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍurbhāvaṃ cakre | sa tāṃ prāpyaiva videhatvaṃ prāptaḥ

Seeing Madri finely adorned, Pandu was stirred by desire. Even as he took her, he died.

Verse 68 (1.63.68)

tatastena saha citāmanvāruroha mādrī | kuntīṃ covāca yamayorāryayā'pramattayā bhavitavyamiti

Then Madri climbed the pyre with him, and said to Kunti: "Noble lady, you must watch over the twins with unfailing care."

Verse 69 (1.63.69)

tataḥ pañcapāṇḍavānsaha kuntyā hāstinapuraṃ nayanti sma tapasvinaḥ

Then the ascetics brought the five Pandavas, together with Kunti, to Hastinapura.

Verse 70 (1.63.70)

tatra bhīṣmāya dhṛtarāṣṭravidurayoḥ pāṇḍoḥ svargagamanaṃ yāthātathyaṃ nivedayantisma tapasvinaḥ

There the ascetics told Bhishma, Dhritarashtra and Vidura exactly how Pandu had gone to heaven.

Verse 71 (1.63.71)

pāṇḍavānsaha kuntyā jatugṛhe dāhayitukāmo dhṛtarāṣṭrātmajo'bhūt

Dhritarashtra's son sought to burn the Pandavas, together with Kunti, in a house of lac.

Verse 72 (1.63.72)

tāṃśca viduro mokṣayāmāsa | tato bhīmo hiḍimbaṃ hatvā putramutpādayāmāsa hiḍimbāyāṃ ghaṭotkacaṃ nāma

But Vidura saved them. Then Bhima killed the rakshasa Hidimba and fathered a son named Ghatotkacha on the rakshasi Hidimba.

Verse 73 (1.63.73)

tataścaikacakrāṃ jagmuḥ kuśalinaḥ | tataḥ pāñcālaviṣayaṃ gatvā svayaṃvare draupadīṃ labdhvā'rdharājyaṃ prāpyendraprasthanivāsinastasyāṃ putrānutpādayāmāsurdraupadyām

Then they went safely to Ekachakra. After that they went to the land of the Panchalas, won Draupadi at her self-choice, obtained half the kingdom, and while living at Indraprastha fathered sons on her, on Draupadi:

Verse 74 (1.63.74)

prativindhyaṃ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ | sutasomaṃ vṛkodaraḥ | śrutakīrtimarjunaḥ | śatānīkaṃ nakulaḥ | śrutasenaṃ sahadeva iti

Yudhishthira fathered Prativindhya; Vrikodara, Sutasoma; Arjuna, Shrutakirti; Nakula, Shatanika; and Sahadeva, Shrutasena.

Note on the text: Restored from the critical edition (1.90.82B–E): Wikisource keeps only the last item of the list of Draupadi's five sons (श्रुतसेनं सहदेव इति); the first four (प्रतिविन्ध्यं युधिष्ठिरः । शतानीकं नकुलः) are restored. The count of thirteen sons in verse 81 confirms the loss. Wikisource's own name for Sahadeva's son (श्रुतसेन, CE श्रुतकर्मा) is kept.

Verse 75 (1.63.75)

bhīmasenaśca pūrvameva hiḍimbāyāṃ rākṣasyāṃ putramutpādayāmāsa ghaṭotkacaṃ nāma | arjunastu nāgakanyāyāmulūpyāmirāvantaṃ nāma putraṃ janayāmāsa

Bhimasena had earlier fathered a son named Ghatotkacha in the rakshasi Hidimba. Arjuna fathered a son named Iravan in the Naga maiden Ulupi.

Note on the text: The second sentence (Iravan) appears in the critical edition only in its apparatus (1.90 *904).

Verse 81 (1.63.81)

Then Arjuna fathered a son named Babhruvahana in Chitrangada, daughter of the lord of Manalura. These are the thirteen sons of the Pandavas.

Note on the text: Corrected मणलूरुपति → मणलूरपति (misprint in Wikisource; the city is Manalura, as in the critical edition's apparatus 1.90 *904). The critical edition counts eleven sons, without Iravan and Babhruvahana.

Verse 82 (1.63.82)

Note on the text: The words of Vasudeva appear in the critical edition only in its apparatus (1.90 *907).

Verse 85 (1.63.85)

Because he was born, a scorcher of foes, to Uttara from the famous son of Subhadra when the line had dwindled away, he became Parikshit.

Note on the text: This verse appears in the critical edition only in its apparatus (1.90 *908); the constituted text gives the same naming in prose (1.90.92B).
