Yayati Ascends to Heaven with His Daughter's Sons
Vasumanas and Shibi, like Ashtaka and Pratardana before them, offer Yayati their worlds in heaven, and he refuses every gift. In a passage found in the vulgate, Yayati's daughter Madhavi, living as an ascetic among the deer, comes to her sons' sacrifice and offers him the merit of her austerities; saved by his daughter and her sons, Yayati declares the daughter's son, the kutapa hour and sesame the three purifiers of the rite for the ancestors. Five golden chariots then carry the kings to heaven. Shibi outstrips the rest because of his generosity, and Yayati reveals that he is their maternal grandfather and that his truth upholds heaven and earth.

dānaṃ tapaḥ satyamathā'pi dharmo | hrīḥ śrīḥ kṣamā saumyamatho vidhitsā | rājannetānyaprameyāṇi rājñaḥ | śibeḥ sthitānyapratimasya buddhyā
Giving, austerity, truth and dharma too, modesty, fortune, forbearance, gentleness and the will to do right: O king, these are beyond measure in King Shibi, the peerless, and abide in his mind.
Note on the text: Corrected संत्यम → सत्यम (misprint in Wikisource; stray anusvara). Matched by hand to the critical edition 1.88.19abcd, of which this is a variant reading.
Verse 42 (1.87.42)
evaṃ vṛtto hrīniṣevaśca yasmā- | ttasmācchibiratyagādvai rathena
Because his conduct is such and he lives by modesty, Shibi has outstripped you in his chariot.
Note on the text: Wikisource prints the heading "वैशंपायन उवाच" between the two halves of this verse; its second half, Vaishampayana's narration, is moved to the next verse. Matches the critical edition 1.88.19ef.

Verse 43 (1.87.43)
athāṣṭakaḥ punarevānvapṛccha- | nmātāmahaṃ kautukenendrakalpam | pṛcchāmi tvāṃ nṛpate brūhi satyaṃ | kutaśca kaścāsi sutaśca kasya | kṛtaṃ tvayā yaddhi na tasya kartā | loke tvadanyaḥ kṣatriyo brāhmaṇo vā
Then Ashtaka, out of curiosity, again questioned his mother's father, who was like Indra: "I ask you, king, tell me truly: where do you come from, who are you, and whose son? What you have done, no other kshatriya or brahmin in the world has done."
Note on the text: The first two lines are the second half of Wikisource verse 42, printed after the heading "वैशंपायन उवाच"; joined to this verse, which continues the same narration, as in the critical edition 1.88.20. Speaker remains Vaishampayana.

yayātirasmi nahuṣasya putraḥ | pūroḥ pitā sārvabhaumastvihāsam | guhyaṃ cārthaṃ māmakebhyo bravīmi | mātāmaho'haṃ bhavatāṃ prakāśam
I am Yayati, son of Nahusha and father of Puru; here I was sovereign of the whole earth. I tell a secret to my own people: I am your maternal grandfather, I say it openly.
Note on the text: Corrected सार्वबौम → सार्वभौम (misprint in Wikisource; ब for भ).
Verse 45 (1.87.45)
sarvāmimāṃ pṛthivīṃ nirjigāya | dattvā pratasthe vipinaṃ brāhmaṇebhyaḥ | medhyānaśvānekaśatānsurūpāṃ- | stadā devāḥ puṇyabhājo bhavanti
I conquered this whole earth, gave it to the brahmins and set out for the forest. I gave a hundred and one handsome horses fit for sacrifice; it is then that the gods share in merit.
Verse 46 (1.87.46)
adāmahaṃ pṛthivīṃ brāhmaṇebhyaḥ | pūrṇāmimāmakhilāṃ vāhanena | gobhiḥ suvarṇena dhanaiśca mukhyai- | stadā'dadaṃ gāḥ śatamarbudāni
I gave this earth to the brahmins, full and entire, with its vehicles, with cattle, gold and the choicest riches; and I gave cows, a hundred arbudas of them.
Note on the text: Corrected शथम → शतम (misprint in Wikisource; थ for त, as in the critical edition).
Verse 47 (1.87.47)
satyena me dyauśca vasundharā ca | tathaivāgnirjvalate mānuṣeṣu | na me vṛthā vyāhṛtameva vākyaṃ | satyaṃ hi santaḥ pratipūjayanti
By my truth heaven and earth stand firm, and so too fire blazes among men. No word of mine has ever been spoken in vain, for the good honour truth.
Note on the text: Corrected तथैवाग्निज्वर्लते → तथैवाग्निर्ज्वलते (misprint in Wikisource; misplaced repha, as in the critical edition). Matched by hand to the critical edition 1.88.24abcd.
Verse 48 (1.87.48)
yadaṣṭaka prabravīmīha satyaṃ | pratardanaṃ cauṣadaśviṃ tathaiva | sarve ca lokā munayaśca devāḥ | satyena pūjyā iti me manogatam
What I say here, Ashtaka, is true, and to Pratardana and the son of Ushadashva as well: all the worlds, the sages and the gods are to be honoured through truth. That is my conviction.
Note on the text: Matched by hand: the last two lines are the critical edition 1.88.24ef; the first two are not in the critical edition (found in the vulgate recension; the critical edition prints them in its apparatus, 1.88.24*868).
Verse 49 (1.87.49)
yo naḥ svargajitaḥ sarvānyathāvṛttaṃ nivedayet | anasūyurdvijāgryebhyaḥ sa labhennaḥ salokatām
Whoever, free of envy, recounts to the foremost of the twice-born the whole story of us who conquered heaven, will reach the same world as ours.

evaṃ rājā sa mahātmā hyatīva | svairdauhitraistārito'mitrasāha | tyaktvā mahīṃ paramodārakarmā | svargaṃ gataḥ karmabhirvyāpya pṛthvīm
So that great-souled king, the crusher of foes, was saved by his daughter's sons; and leaving the earth, he of most generous deeds went to heaven, having filled the earth with his deeds.
