Kanva Sends Shakuntala to Dushyanta
Seeing the boy Sarvadamana's prowess, Kanva decides it is time for him to become heir apparent, and counsels Shakuntala on a faithful wife's duty and the boy on his royal father. The boy wants to stay in the hermitage and Shakuntala weeps and refuses, until Kanva persuades them both and charges his ascetic disciples to escort them to Pratishthana at the meeting of the Ganga and the Yamuna. The party reaches the splendid city at midday, reads good omens and enters by the Vardhamana gate amid the citizens' praise; but when some townsfolk mock the gaunt ascetics, the sages recall Kanva's order not to enter the city and turn back.
