Nachiketa Visits Yama

Yudhishthira asks for more on the fruit of giving cows. Bhishma tells how the sage Auddalaki, angered, cursed his son Nachiketa to go to Yama, and how the boy, after falling dead, returned and told what he had seen: Yama's hall, the shining worlds of the righteous, and the rivers of milk and ghee made for givers of cows. Yama's teaching follows: who is a fit recipient, which cows are best, how substitutes of ghee, sesame or water stand in for a cow, and the many fruits of the gift.

ṛṣirauddālakirdīkṣāmupagamya tataḥ sutam | tvaṃ māmupacarasveti nāciketamabhāṣata

The sage Auddalaki, having undertaken a consecration, said to his son Nachiketa, "Attend on me."

Note on the text: Wikisource's couplet = CE 13.70.3a and 3c; the CE has a third line (3e) that Wikisource carries into the next verse.

Verse 4 (13.106.4)

When that observance was over, the great sage spoke to his son, who was absorbed in his ablutions and delighted in study of the Veda:
