Brahma Describes the World of the Cows

Brahma, answering Indra's question about the gift of cows, describes the radiant worlds of the cows, where there is no old age, sickness or weariness and every wish is fulfilled, and says who reaches them and who is shut out. He then sets out the fruit of giving cows: how it varies with the giver's virtue and class, the right recipient, time and kind of cow, the lawful ways of acquiring cows, and the merit of rescuing cows and brahmins from danger and of following a cow in the forest.

Verse 1 (13.108.1)

yo'yaṃ praśnastvayā pṛṣṭo gopradānādikāritaḥ | nānyaḥ praṣṭāsti lokesmiṃstvattonyo hi śatakrato

This question you have asked, Shatakratu, concerning the gift of cows and the rest — there is no one else in this world who would ask it but you.

Note on the text: Removed a stray question mark after शतक्रतो (printed शतक्रतो?).

Verse 2 (13.108.2)

santi nānāvidhā lokā yāṃstvaṃ śakra na paśyasi | paśyāmi yānahaṃ lokānekapatnyaśca yāḥ striyaḥ

There are worlds of many kinds, Shakra, that you do not see. I see them — and the women who keep to one husband alone.

Verse 3 (13.108.3)

karmabhiścāpi suśubhaiḥ suvratā ṛṣayastathā | saśarīrā hi tānyānti brāhmaṇāḥ śubhabuddhayaḥ

Through deeds of great merit, steadfast sages and likewise brahmins of pure mind go to those worlds in their very bodies.

Verse 4 (13.108.4)

śarīranyāsamokṣeṇa manasā nirmalena ca | svapnabhūtāṃśca tām̐llokānpaśyantīhāpi suvratāḥ

By laying down the body and being freed, with a mind free of stain, those of firm vows see those worlds even here, as though in a dream.

Verse 5 (13.108.5)

Hear, thousand-eyed one, what qualities those worlds have. Time does not run its course there, nor old age, nor fire.

Note on the text: Not matched by the alignment: the two lines are CE 13.72.5a,c (line 2 reads न च पावकः where the CE has na ca pāpakam); recension variant, kept.

Verse 6 (13.108.6)

tathā nāstyaśubhaṃ kiñcinna vyādhistatra na klamaḥ | yadyacca gāvo manasā tasminvāñchanti vāsava

Nothing inauspicious exists there; there is no sickness and no weariness. And whatever the cows wish for in their minds there, O Vasava,

Note on the text: Not matched by the alignment: line 1 = CE 13.72.5e, line 2 = CE 13.72.6a. Wikisource divides the CE's three-line verses into couplets; ce_ref names the CE verse holding the first line.

Verse 7 (13.108.7)

tatsarvaṃ prāpayanti sma mama pratyakṣadarśanāt | kāmagāḥ kāmacāriṇyaḥ kāmātkāmāṃśca bhuñjate

all that they bring about — I have seen it with my own eyes. They go where they please, move as they please, and enjoy their desires by the mere wish.

Note on the text: Not matched by the alignment: line 1 = CE 13.72.6c, line 2 = CE 13.72.6e (three-line verse divided differently).

Verse 8 (13.108.8)

vāpyaḥ sarāṃsi sarito vividhāni vanāni ca | gṛhāṇi parvatāścaiva yāvaddravyaṃ ca kiñcana

There are pools, lakes and rivers, woods of many kinds, houses and mountains, and every sort of goods.

Verse 9 (13.108.9)

manojñaṃ sarvabhūtebhyastadvanaṃ tatra dṛśyate | īdṛśānviddhi tām̐llokānnāsti lokastathāvidhaḥ

That grove there appears delightful to all beings. Know those worlds to be of such a kind; no world is like them.

Note on the text: Corrected विद्दि → विद्धि (misprint in Wikisource; CE viddhi).

Verse 10 (13.108.10)

tatra sarvasahāḥ kṣāntā vatsalā guruvartinaḥ | ahaṅkārairvirahitā yānti śakra narottamāḥ

Those best of men go there, Shakra, who bear all things, are patient and tender, obey their elders, and are free of egoism.

Verse 11 (13.108.11)

yaḥ sarvamāṃsāni na bhakṣayīta | pumānsadā bhāvito dharmayuktaḥ | mātāpitrorarcitā satyayuktaḥ | śuśruṣitā brāhmaṇānāmanindyaḥ

The man who never eats the flesh of any creature, who is ever devout and endowed with dharma, who honours his mother and father, is truthful, serves brahmins and is beyond reproach,

Verse 12 (13.108.12)

akrodhano goṣu tathā dvijeṣu | dharme rato guruśuśrūṣakaśca | yāvajjīvaṃ satyavṛtte rataśca | dāne rato yaḥ kṣamī cāparādhe

who is free of anger towards cows and brahmins, devoted to dharma and to serving his elders, steadfast in truthful conduct all his life, devoted to giving, and forgiving of offences,

Verse 13 (13.108.13)

mṛdurdānto devaparāyaṇaśca | sarvātithiścāpi yathā dayāvān | īdṛgguṇo mānavastaṃ prayāti | lokaṃ gavāṃ śāśvataṃ cāvyayaṃ ca

gentle, self-controlled, devoted to the gods, a host to every guest, and compassionate — a man of such qualities reaches the eternal and imperishable world of the cows.

Verse 14 (13.108.14)

na pāradārī paśyati lokametaṃ | na vai gurughno na mṛṣā sampralāpī | sadāpavādī brāhmaṇeṣvāttavairo | doṣairanyairyaśca yukto durātmā

The adulterer does not see this world, nor the killer of a teacher, nor the teller of falsehoods, nor the constant slanderer who bears enmity towards brahmins, nor the evil-souled man who is stained with other faults.

Verse 15 (13.108.15)

na mitradhruṅnaikṛtikaḥ kṛtaghnaḥ | śaṭho'nṛjurdharmavidveṣakaśca | na brahmahā manasā'pi prapaśye- | dgavāṃ lokaṃ puṇyakṛtāṃ nivāsam

Nor does one who betrays a friend, a cheat, an ingrate, a rogue, a crooked man or a hater of dharma; and a killer of a brahmin cannot behold, even in thought, that world of the cows, the dwelling of the virtuous.

Note on the text: Corrected शठोऽनुजुर् → शठोऽनृजुर् (misprint in Wikisource; अनृजु 'crooked', CE anṛjuḥ).

Verse 16 (13.108.16)

etatte sarvamākhyātaṃ naipuṇyena sureśvara | gopradānaratānāṃ tu phalaṃ śṛṇu śatakrato

All this I have told you in full, Lord of the gods. Now hear, Shatakratu, the fruit for those who delight in giving cows.

Verse 17 (13.108.17)

dāyādyalabdhairarthairyo gāḥ krītvā samprayacchati | dharmārjitadhanaiḥ krītānsa lokānāpnute'kṣayān

He who buys cows with wealth obtained by inheritance and gives them wins imperishable worlds, bought with wealth lawfully earned.

Note on the text: Corrected धर्मार्जितान्धैः → धर्मार्जितधनैः (misprint in Wikisource; garbled, CE dharmārjitadhanakrītān, and the pāda is a syllable short).

Verse 18 (13.108.18)

yo vai dyūte dhanaṃ jitvā gāḥ krītvā samprayacchati | sa divyamayutaṃ śakra varṣāṇāṃ phalamaśnute

He who wins wealth at dice, buys cows with it and gives them, Shakra, enjoys a heavenly reward lasting ten thousand years.

Verse 19 (13.108.19)

dāyādyādyāḥ sma vai gāvo nyāyapūrvairupārjitāḥ | pradadyāttāḥ pradātṝṇāṃ sambhavantyapi ca dhruvāḥ

Cows that come by inheritance and are acquired by lawful means should be given away; for those who give them they become lasting.

Note on the text: The line दायाद्याद्याः स्म वै गावो is a garbled form of CE 13.72.18a (dāyādyā yasya vai gāvo); read and translated in the sense of the pair as printed, the text left as it stands.

Verse 20 (13.108.20)

pratigṛhya tu yo dadyādgāḥ saṃśuddhena cetasā | tasyāpīhākṣayām̐llokāndhruvānviddhi śacīpate

And he who accepts cows as a gift and gives them with a thoroughly pure mind — know, Lord of Shachi, that for him too there are imperishable, lasting worlds here.

Note on the text: Corrected संशुद्धेनि → संशुद्धेन (misprint in Wikisource; CE suśuddhena).

Verse 21 (13.108.21)

janmaprabhṛti satyaṃ ca yo brūyānniyatendriyaḥ | gurudvijasahaḥ kṣāntastasya gobhiḥ samā gatiḥ

He who from birth speaks the truth with his senses restrained, who bears patiently with teachers and brahmins and is forbearing — his goal equals that won through cows.

Verse 22 (13.108.22)

na jātu brāhmaṇo vācyo yadavācyaṃ śacīpate | manasā goṣu na druhyedgovṛttirgonukampakaḥ

One should never say to a brahmin what ought not to be said, Lord of Shachi, nor wrong the cows even in thought; one should live by cows and be kind to cows.

Verse 23 (13.108.23)

satye dharme ca niratastasya śakra phalaṃ śṛṇu | gosahasreṇa samitā tasya dhenurbhavatyuta

Hear, Shakra, the fruit for one devoted to truth and dharma: his cow becomes equal in worth to a thousand cows.

Verse 24 (13.108.24)

kṣatriyasya guṇairatairanvitasya phalaṃ śṛṇu | saptārdhaśatatulyā gaurbhavatīti viniścayaḥ

Hear the fruit for a Kshatriya endowed with these qualities: his cow becomes equal to seven hundred and fifty — this is certain.

Note on the text: Not matched by the alignment: CE 13.72.23 (kṣatriyasya guṇair ebhir anvitasya phalaṃ śṛṇu / tasyāpi śatatulyā gaur bhavatīti viniścayaḥ). Wikisource reads सप्तार्धशततुल्या, which its own note (13-108-24) glosses as 750; the CE has 'equal to a hundred'. Recension variant, kept.

Verse 25 (13.108.25)

vaiśyasyaite yadi guṇāstasya pañcaśataṃ bhavet | śūdrasyāpi vinītasya caturbhāgaphalaṃ smṛtam

If a Vaishya has these qualities, his cow would be worth five hundred; and for a well-disciplined Shudra the fruit is remembered as a quarter share.

Verse 26 (13.108.26)

etaccainaṃ yo'nutiṣṭheta yuktaḥ | satye rato guruśuśrūṣayā ca | dakṣaḥ kṣānto devatārthī praśāntaḥ | śucirbuddho dharmaśīlo'nahaṃvāk

Whoever follows this rule steadily — devoted to truth and to serving his teacher, skilful, patient, a worshipper of the gods, tranquil, pure, wise, virtuous and sparing in speech —

Verse 27 (13.108.27)

mahatphalaṃ prāpyate saddvijāya | dattvā dogdhrīṃ vidhinā'nena dhenum | nityaṃ dadyādekabhaktaḥ sadā ca | satye sthito guruśuśrūṣitā ca

wins great reward by giving a milch cow to a worthy brahmin by this rule. Let him give always, eating one meal a day, ever abiding in truth and serving his teacher.

Note on the text: Corrected गुरुशुश्रुषिता → गुरुशुश्रूषिता (misprint in Wikisource; the long ऊ of शुश्रूषा, as in verse 11).

Verse 28 (13.108.28)

vedādhyāyī goṣu yo bhaktimāṃśca | nityaṃ dattvā yo'bhinandeta gāśca | ājātito yaśca gavāṃ nameta | idaṃ phalaṃ śakra nibodha tasya

He who studies the Veda and is devoted to cows, who always rejoices in the cows after giving them, and who bows to cows from his birth — hear, Shakra, this is his reward.

Verse 29 (13.108.29)

yatsyādiṣṭvā rājamūye phalaṃ tu | yatsyādiṣṭvā bahunā kāñcanena | etattulyaṃ phalamapyāhuragryaṃ | sarve santastvṛṣayo ye ca siddhāḥ

Whatever fruit would come from performing the Rajasuya, and whatever from sacrificing with abundant gold — the sages and the perfected ones, all the good, call the fruit equal to these the highest.

Note on the text: Corrected एततुल्यं → एतत्तुल्यं and सर्वे संन्तस्त्वषयो → सर्वे सन्तस्त्वृषयो (misprints in Wikisource; dropped त्, misplaced anusvara and ऋ; CE etat tulyaṃ … sarve santas tv ṛṣayo).

Verse 30 (13.108.30)

yo'graṃ bhaktaṃ kiñcidaprāśya dadyā- | dgobhyo nityaṃ govratī satyavādī | śānto'lubdho gosahasrasya puṇyaṃ | saṃvatsareṇāpnuyātsatyaśīlaḥ

He who, setting aside the first portion of his food and eating none of it, gives it daily to the cows, keeping the cows' vow, truthful, calm and free of greed, a man of true character, gains within a year the merit of a thousand cows.

Verse 31 (13.108.31)

yadekabhaktamaśnīyāddadyādekaṃ gavāṃ ca yat | daśavarṣāṇyanantāni govratī gonukampakaḥ

Whoever eats a single meal and gives one share of it to the cows, keeping the cows' vow and kind to them, earns ten years of endless merit.

Note on the text: Corrected यदकेभक्तमश्नीयाद् → यदेकभक्तमश्नीयाद् (misprint in Wikisource; transposed vowel, CE ya ekaṃ bhaktam aśnīyād).

Verse 32 (13.108.32)

ekenaiva ca bhaktena yaḥ krītvā gāṃ prayacchati | yāvanti tasyā romāṇi sambhavanti śatakrato

And he who, at the cost of a single meal, buys a cow and gives her — as many hairs as she has, Shatakratu,

Note on the text: Not matched by the alignment: lines = CE 13.72.31a,c (line 2 reads सम्भवन्ति for CE proktāni divasāni; the Wikisource note 13-108-32 gives the CE-like reading as a variant).

Verse 33 (13.108.33)

tāvacchatānāṃ sa gavāṃ phalamāpnoti śāśvatam | brāhmaṇasya phalaṃ hīdaṃ kṣatriyasya tu vai śṛṇu

that many hundreds of cows' lasting fruit he gains. This is the brahmin's fruit; now hear the Kshatriya's.

Note on the text: Not matched by the alignment: line 1 = CE 13.72.31e, line 2 = CE 13.72.32a (three-line verse divided differently). The CE star line 13.72.31f*0365_01 is not on the page.

Verse 34 (13.108.34)

pañcavārṣikamevaṃ tu kṣatriyasya phalaṃ smṛtam | tato'rdhena tu vaiśyasya śūdro vaiśyārdhataḥ smṛtaḥ

For a Kshatriya the fruit of this is remembered as lasting five years; for a Vaishya, half of that; and the Shudra's is remembered as half the Vaishya's.

Note on the text: Not matched by the alignment: lines = CE 13.72.32c,e.

Verse 35 (13.108.35)

yaścātmavikrayaṃ kṛtvā gāḥ krītvā samprayacchati | yāvatsaṃdarśayedgāṃ vai sa tāvatphalamaśnute

He who has sold himself, buys cows and gives them wins a reward as great as the reach of what he shows in the cows he presents.

Note on the text: Not matched by the alignment: lines = CE 13.72.33a,c. Corrected यश्चात्मावेक्रयं → यश्चात्मविक्रयं (misprint in Wikisource; वे for वि, CE ātmavikrayaṃ). The line यावत्संदर्शयेद्गां वै is read with the page's own note (13-108-35: संदर्शयेत् = पश्येत्, 'as far as cows are to be seen') ; CE has yāvatīḥ sparśayed gā vai.

Verse 36 (13.108.36)

romṇi romṇi mahābhāga lokāścāsyākṣayāḥ smṛtāḥ | saṅgrāmeṣvarjayitvā tu yo vai gāḥ samprayacchati | ātmavikrayatulyāstāḥ śāśvatā viddhi kauśika

For every hair, O greatly fortunate one, his worlds are remembered as imperishable. And he who wins cows in battles and gives them — know, Kaushika, that those cows are everlasting and equal to selling oneself.

Note on the text: Not matched by the alignment: line 1 = CE 13.72.33e, lines 2-3 = CE 13.72.34a,c (three lines, as printed).

Verse 37 (13.108.37)

abhāve yo gavāṃ dadyāttiladhenuṃ yatavrataḥ | durgātsa tārito dhenvā kṣīranadyāṃ pramodatte

If cows are not to be had, he who keeps his vow and gives a sesame-cow is carried over hardship by that cow and rejoices in the river of milk.

Verse 38 (13.108.38)

na tvevāsāṃ dānamātraṃ praśastaṃ | pātraṃ kālo goviśeṣo vidhiśca | kālajñānaṃ vipragavāntaraṃ hi | duḥkhaṃ jñātuṃ pāvakādityabhūtam

Mere giving of cows is not what is praised; the recipient, the time, the kind of cow and the rule all matter. Knowing the right time, and the difference between brahmin and cow, is hard, for they are like fire and the sun.

Verse 39 (13.108.39)

svādhyāyāḍhyaṃ śuddhayoniṃ praśāntaṃ | vaitānasthaṃ pāpabhīruṃ bahujñam | goṣu kṣāntaṃ nātitīkṣṇaṃ śaraṇyaṃ | vṛttiglānaṃ tādṛśaṃ pātramāhuḥ

They call him a worthy recipient who is rich in sacred study, of pure birth, tranquil, keeper of the Vedic fires, fearful of sin, much learned, patient with cows, not too fierce, a refuge for others, and in want of a livelihood.

Verse 40 (13.108.40)

vṛttiglāne sīdati cātimātraṃ | tuṣṭyarthaṃ vā homyahetoḥ prasūteḥ | gurvarthaṃ vā bālasaṃvṛddhaye vā | dhenuṃ dadyāddeśakāle viśiṣṭe

When a man in want of livelihood is in deep distress — whether for his own contentment, or for the sake of an oblation, or for a birth, or for his teacher, or for the rearing of a child — one should give a cow at a distinguished place and time.

Verse 41 (13.108.41)

antarjātāḥ sukrayajñānalabdhāḥ | prāṇaiḥ krītāstejasā yautakāśca | kṛcchrotsṛṣṭāḥ poṣaṇābhyāgatāśca | dvārairetairgoviśeṣāḥ praśastāḥ

Cows born in the house, those well bought, those gained through knowledge, those bought with one's life, those won by prowess, those received as dowry, those given up in hardship, and those that came through maintaining them — by these doors the special cows are praised.

Note on the text: Not matched by the alignment: CE 13.72.39 (antarjātāḥ sukrayajñānalabdhāḥ …). Corrected अन्तर्ज्ञाताः सक्रय° → अन्तर्जाताः सुक्रय° (misprints in Wikisource; ज्ञा for जा, स for सु; CE antarjātāḥ sukraya°, and the page's own note 13-108-41 reads अन्तर्जाताः सुक्रय°). The rest of the verse is a recension variant of the CE (प्राणैः क्रीताः …).

Verse 42 (13.108.42)

balānvitāḥ śīlavayopapannāḥ | sarvāḥ praśaṃsanti sugandhavatyaḥ | yathā hi gaṅgā saritāṃ variṣṭhā | tathā'rjunīnāṃ kapilā variṣṭhā

Cows that are strong, of good temper and age, and sweet-smelling are all praised. As the Ganga is the best of rivers, so among the cows the tawny kapila is best.

Verse 43 (13.108.43)

So too, having given a draught-bull to a brahmin — young, strong, trained, able to draw the plough, of boundless vigour — he reaches the worlds of the giver of ten cows.
